Site Improvements—Response

A couple of weeks ago, we asked for your ideas on how to improve this site, directing traffic to the post below to consolidate comments:

This Site Needs A Few Improvements!

Melody, JavaJana, brodave, dkrst, Breve, Gregg86 and many others took us up on that proposal and gave us some great ideas. Here is a summary of the key ideas and what we're doing about them.

First, many ideas from the original list that Melody posted have been implemented, including being able to track your own and other's ideas (through the "Favorites" mechanism) and archiving popular ideas. Also coming soon is the ability to vote "No" on an idea. Finally, the ability to have profiles is planned to roll out in stages over the next few months.

You also gave us a number of additional ideas, including:

  • Consolidating similar ideas: Ugh! We couldn't agree more on the importance of this one. This will happen in a few weeks. We have also already implemented a “related ideas” search feature so as you start to post a new idea, you hopefully see if a similar idea has already been posted, but we are going to go back and clean up all the duplicates already entered as well. We are doing it in such a way that it will consolidate historical votes, too.
  • Searching for all the posts for a particular person: coming in a few weeks.
  • Partner-specific Ideas in Action: Asher and brodave, this being developed for the Partner site right now.
  • Search entry field placement: that is going to be changed to be consistent and obvious on every page.
  • Not locking ideas under review: dkrst, agreed! We hate that, in fact. There is a technical reason why we did it, and it was necessary at the time, but we are moving quickly to allow discussions and voting to continue on ideas that have moved from "in the wild" to "under review". In fact, we usually want to have even MORE discussions about those particular ideas. We want to pose potential solutions, ask clarifying questions, etc. This is a very high priority for us.
  • Pagination issues: brodave, we are adding a "Go To Page..." function that will make it easier to skip ahead any number of pages.

That’s it for today. Thanks for taking the time to talk with us. It is a loud world, and I hope this site will be a place for high level discourse that leads to meaningful changes. Let's have some great conversations.
