The Alcove is Coming to Starbucks

My name is Mark Molaro and I host the online feature interview program The Alcove with Mark Molaro. We are known for smart and thoughtful conversations with fascinating and diverse guests like Naomi Klein, Neil de Grasse Tyson, Arianna Huffington and many others.

Several months ago it was brought to my attention that a member of the MSI community had suggested adding my program to the cultural offerings supported by Starbucks for its customers. This idea, called ‘Great Conversations’ seemed to want to make the coffee house more of a hub of social and human interaction, which I found intriguing because it was by far the highest voted customer suggestion on the entire MSI website. I agree with this customer that people are hungry for meaningful social interaction in this time of serious issues and challenges for the entire planet. More than anything people want to be part of this conversation both in person and through the use of meaningful technology that allows them to participate and connect.

With this in mind, I am pleased to say to the MSI community here that Starbucks is now a dedicated sponsor of my program and starting next month will feature our video conversations both on its Starbucks/AT&T wifi page and at Starbucks.com.  Thank you so much for your wonderful comments and encouragement on MSI!

Our program is dedicated to in-depth discussions with extraordinary guests and thinkers. I am confident that such discussions and the social media and community around these discussions will not only entertain and inform, but most importantly serve to simultaneously inspire subsequent conversations and dialog. For all of these reasons I am pleased to announce this partnership, and I invite the MSI community to participate here and on my program’s other websites. I look forward to your ideas, feedback and discussion in the months ahead.

Thank you,

Mark Molaro

Greil Marcus: American author and social commentator

Mark Pesce: technology futurist, writer, teacher and a pioneer of virtual reality

Final note:   The opinions of the host and the guests of The Alcove are their own, not necessarily those of Starbucks.

i think we need to have more of these not only in starbucks but in all types of public meeting places where people can come and have thought-provoking conversation in the company of people who are thinking and caring - good work and good luck on building this out and maybe expanding mini alcoves of inquiring minds on and off line - keep dreaming mark

Congrats Mark - great to see Starbucks getting behind such a terrific show! Hopefully the partnership helps expose this show to a lot more people. It's important work you are doing, and it's great to see Starbucks recognizes this.

I am so pleased Mark's "The Alcove" will be a permanent feature of the Starbucks.com and Starbucks/AT&T initiative. How perfect!  This compelling and intelligent discourse featuring probing interviews of some of our great thinkers -- and do-ers -- has been one of the experiences I have enjoyed on Facebook this year. Recently, I missed Mark's program and found myself looking for it. How wonderful Starbucks and AT&T have forged a relationship where this elevated discourse - and extended community, can continue. Thank you, Starbucks and AT&T!

Brooke51

PR or not this isn't bad - more conversation is always welcome and this seems to support that

I don't know whether it is a good facelift or not for our best coffee shop in the world but at least it's gonna be a delightful breeze of fresh air in this unsubtantial world. Men need to reconnect with each other, listen to each other, hopefully leading to a better understanding of our differences. May God bless Starbucks and the US!

11/9/2008 11:03 AM

I think the potential success of this initiative lies largely in the topics covered and the seriousness of approach. Good conversation needs to be balanced and it truly does need patrons to take part.

The proof is in the pudding but overall I at least applaud the idealism behind this idea. If the US can elect it's first African-American president than all ideas are possible.

InezGetzer
11/9/2008 11:37 AM

well put cleavis and others - it is definitely a lot about how it's done but some chat with my cuppa joe is more than welcome IMO

I'm a PhD students in NYC. And I always come over to some starbucks places with some friends and we discuss ideas together. But sometimes it runs dry. So I'm really happy to see that now Starbucks will provide us with a new interview show where great authors and thinkers will share things with all of us. I'll definitely sign up for the Alcove at Starbucks! Thanks guys, keep up with the good work.

11/11/2008 9:18 AM

well...I don't believe in Starbucks' desire to make ideas progress. I mean, it's clear to me that they're just trying to make more money by adding this show to their website, luring people to buy more coffee etc. As soon as they're done with their bs publicity, they'll get rid of all these good intentions even the show. I hope I'm wrong...

I'll need some time to see if they keep their promise and really enable people to have access to deep dialogues....if it was to prove to be true, you guys should have Ron Paul on the show.

WMK554
11/12/2008 2:34 PM

Good point BMW_772. I was also going to ask if the guests have to be dealing with particular issues chosen by Starbucks or is it going to be more like a show open to any prominent guest? I'll appreciate any light on that.

something more central to the location should be hosted.

An idea posted on a blackboard and a blog link placed where newbies can comment via this starbucks account and those who are already discussing the topic in their curcle can decide whether its worth putting the newbie in their circle.

There are circles formed at every location - the regulars.
