Dark Chocolate Mocha Defined

Hi all! This is Andrea and I work on the Research and Development team for the Beverage category at Starbucks.  My degree and background are in Food Science and I’ve held a variety of roles over the past four years including Product Developer at a chocolate and candy manufacturer in Canada. Throughout my time as a developer, the idea of offering a dark mocha, or other products with dark chocolate have surfaced, so I want to share some work we’ve done here at Starbucks.

Dark chocolate can be made with various types of cocoa, which may be used alone or in combination with other cocoas to make layers of complex, rich flavors. This is very similar to the way different types of Starbucks® coffees are blended and roasted. Delicious!

Our mochas are made with a blend of two cocoas, which are layered to produce a rich chocolate experience that enhances the flavor profile of the espresso. Think of the two working together to produce the complex flavors you experience in every delicious sip of mocha! Starbucks® Signature Hot Chocolate was developed with a rich, smooth chocolate flavor in mind, but is more complex and closer to a dark chocolate profile due to the four types of cocoas used and the significant quantity of cocoa that gives it a unique flavor.

Thank you for your ideas around dark chocolate.  Please continue to give us your feedback as we continue to innovate and strive to produce high quality beverages.

On a side note; I too enjoy an intense dark chocolate flavor, and I love the new Espresso Truffle beverage … go and try one today!!!

Please bring back Chantico or bring something similar. The new Signature Hot Chocolate is very good, but I wish it had the thickness of the Chantico. It felt like you were drinking a liquid high quality chocolate bar. Like you were being wrapped in a thick chocolate blanket! I loved not only the flavor but also the thickness of the drink.

I even went so far as to purchase packages of Chantico on ebay after it was dropped from the menu.

Hi Andrea, I love the concept of the dark chocolate mocha, however I believe there is bigger issue when it comes to Starbucks coffee and new flavors.  I just read an article today about Starbuck's 1Q profit estimates. Doesn't look good... Starbuck's coffee (espresso) use to be good when they used the original espresso pull machines, when they used whole milk, when they made true-authentic coffees without all the sugar, corn syrup, flavored concoctions.  If Howard Schultz can bring back the traditional way of making espresso, cappuccinos, lattes, etc, and teach "baristas" how to be TRUE baristas and not over roast the beans, over heat the milk and only use whole milk for drinks such as cappuccinos and lattes, then Starbucks won't have problem with its profits.  I don't buy Starbucks anymore.  I use to be a loyal customer, buying 3-4 drinks a day.  Not thinking twice about paying $4 for a coffee until the quality went to the pits.  Now I go to a local coffee house that makes EXCELLENT espresso, coffees, etc.  You must see www.cappuccinomovie.com.

Hello Andrea.........Please consider the mexican mocha.  I am a mocha lover and believe that combining mexican hot chocolate and espresso would be a wonderful mixture of flavors.

Happy New Year Andrea!

In your ongoing focus on product development, new product introduction, etc.  how can we as a consumer base influence you and your management team to BRING BACK CHANTICO??!!

Truly, if we have to start a grass-roots campaign, we will do it.

In difficult times such as these, it is even more critical to have affordable treats to chase away the blues (well....full blown depression might be more apt...)

Did you know studies show that consuming a cup of hot chocolate in the morning causes the brain to release endorphins, which act as a mood enhancer that lasts for the better  part of the day?

Truly, truly I can't beg you enough to raise this at the next team meeting.  The world can't wait.  Bring back Chantico now, PLEASE!

Please let us know what you think.

Best,

Nancy
