"I'm In" - Pledge Your Time to help make the Country a Better Place

President-elect Obama recently announced the creation of the Renew America Together Initiative, a call for community service headed by General Colin Powell, www.usaservice.org.

I’m pleased to report that Starbucks is partnering with the HandsOn Network to make it easy to participate in the President’s call for national service.

Together, we will aim to raise over one million hours of community service by offering our stores across the nation as a place to make a pledge of community service in the new year.  More detail on our efforts is imminent.  Check out http://pledge5.starbucks.com.

This is going to be a very cool experience in our stores.  While volunteering and commitment to the communities we serve is a long-standing priority here at Starbucks, being part of this initiative at this time will make it easy for many of our customers who want to be part of community renewal and service.  Special thanks to our many partners and customers who will participate all around the country.  I’m proud we are doing this.

Best,

To help encourage everyone to do something for their community, starting Wednesday, January 21 through Sunday, January 25, 2009 in exchange for pledging five hours of community service, we will reward customers with a free cup of coffee.

Acutally, that is also my new year's goal is to give a bit more of my time to my community.  I feel we can all do a bit more in this crazy world and be optimistic.

I am happy to know that Starbucks offer this venue to connect.  I am looking forward to it.

Jonny@SF:  We're excited  as well.  That's a perfect new year's goal.   What a great time to pause for a moment, think about what you care about most, and then take action.    The needs are great but we, together, are greater.

Momiji:  Appreciate the links!

In 2008 I volunteered for 975 hours as a medic with our local volunteer ambulance agency.  For all this time the Federal Government gave me  a $250 tax deduction on my federal taxes.   One way to increase community service would be to figure out how to make it financially beneficial for the volunteers.   It would be great if we could get  income tax credit for the hours we volunteer.

I absolutely love this idea and am so happy that Starbucks is encouraging the idea of community service! I look forward to pledging and sharing the information with the participants of Operation NICE (http://www.operationnice.com/).

What a wonderful idea.  Thank you.  You have already helped a non-profit that I volunteer at and they sure did appreciate it!

When you add the list of places to volunteer, can you please add, Raleigh, NC:  The SPCA of Wake County and the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina.

These are very special places!  Thank you for your consideration.

PS, I am glad you decided to keep the Peppermint Mocha Latte through-out the year and not just during the holidays.  It's my favorite.

The websites for the non-profits mentioned above are:

foodbanknc.org and spcawake.org

Thanks again,

Karen Nyreen (on facebook)

@AliceHohl - We have partnered with the Hands On Network to help our customers and partners find local volunteer opportunities.  Check out their website to learn how you can add your volunteer opportunities to their site.

so you won't reward tea drinkers? that's just not fair! but then again you can't even be nice enough to give us free refills (for BOTH cards), so am i shocked? nope.

This is gay, and I don't mean in a homosexual bashing sort of way, rather in the connotation of lameness it's taken on over time.  Honorable idea, lofty hope of saintifying the Starbucks name, dumb idea.
