Introducing Artisan Breakfast Sandwiches

Hi, it’s Erin on the food team and I’m super excited to talk to you today about our new Artisan Breakfast Sandwiches.  You’ve continued to ask for a wider selection of breakfast options and we’ve heard you.  We have also listened to your feedback on MSI about your disappointment around the Ham and Egg Sandwich being removed from the menu.  You said Ham was one of your morning favorites and one of our new Artisan Sandwiches will feature Black Forest Ham.  Beginning March 3, our two new offerings available in participating stores in the U.S. are:

• Artisan Bacon Sandwich, a flavorful bakery-style sandwich made with a parmesan egg frittata, four smoked bacon slices, and Gouda cheese on a perfectly-baked hand-shaped artisan roll
• Artisan Ham Sandwich, a delightful combination featuring a parmesan egg frittata, Black Forest ham, and mild cheddar on a perfectly-baked hand-shaped artisan roll

The artisan sandwiches use only the finest ingredients with no high fructose corn syrup, artificial flavors or certified colors.  Even better, both are less than 400 calories and provide a good source of protein!

The artisan sandwiches will be available for $3.25 or $3.95 (pricing may vary - plus tax where applicable) when paired with a tall (12 fl. oz.) drip coffee.  I hope you will try one today, sign on and let us know what you think.

When introducing some new breakfast sandwiches, why can't you introduce a vegetarian sandwich?

Good choices - you and the rest of the "food team" may want to peruse this thread - you have a customer mutiny on your hands!!  Pretty emotional issue...

I have some difficulty feigning enthusiasm for yet another food offering. Does Starbucks really want to be a fast breakfast stop?  That's not where the magic is to be had.  To date, I've never had a colleague come down to my office during the day and say, "Hey Melody, do you want to go on an oatmeal run?".

mystarbucksidea.force.com/ideaView

Lots of people here at MSI are crying out that Starbucks doesn't feel like a coffeehouse anymore.

I tried the ham sandwich this morning.  Pretty tasty.

Wow!  Thanks for the link @pc12pilot.....Can't believe the Food Team has decided to drop fresh baked goods across the nation and get that delicious AIRPORT CARDBOARD FOOD in all locations!!  How can this be true??  The only BAD FOOD Starbucks experience I have had is the frozen and thawed stuff in the airports.  Other reasons this is a HORRIBLE IDEA > carbon footprint from trucks, damage to local suppliers, global responsibility, and on...and on....THIS IDEA MUST BE STOPPED!  Short term gain for cheap garbage food - long term loss of customer base!!

Great idea!  Thanks for this addition.

Maudy
3/3/2009 11:45 AM

Great Idea and fairly reasonable price considering there is a combination of fats, carbs and protein, dairy in the latte.  Wonderful to have a lower fat option.

IF you could offer one sandwich with a Gluten Free Bun (Kinnikinik Foods has great Gluten free bread products), I would eat this several times per week.

Maudy
3/3/2009 11:55 AM

Hi Erin, Here is an example of the kind of bun you could offer for gluten and wheat intolerant folks or those who prefer whole grain breads.  I think it would appeal to people without glutne intolerance as well.  How about it?

Tapioca Rice Multigrain Seed & Fibre Buns

 14 oz.

$5.60

Our mini-loaf buns are a great tasting source of fibre with added sunflower and flax seeds.

Thanks, Maudy

I second purple1's suggestion.  I would love a non-meat egg sandwich option!

bobbylight
3/3/2009 11:56 AM

I also think you should consider a vegetarian option.  Either do a soy patty (Boca, MorningStar) or just replace the meat with peppers to go with the egg and cheese.  I also agree that you should maintain a nice bakery selection, with lower fat like those reduce fat crumb cakes.  That banana red. fat cake is great.

Perk
3/3/2009 11:59 AM

I would love the eggs florentine sandwich back... is it just me or was that the best tasting sandwich Starbucks ever made?  Please consider bringing this item back!

bobbylight
3/3/2009 12:01 PM

Maudy's idea is excellent.  You should go with what your competition doesn't have, such as a tasteful variety of fiber/flax options.  More and more individuals are wising up to healthier options.  Don't go overboard in emulating the breakfast sandwich other joints have.  Offer different stuff and you'll maintain that coffeehouse persona AND make a sustained profit as more consumers seek healthier options.

3/3/2009 12:05 PM

Your offerings are generally top rate taste-wise  but the menu is sorely lacking something for those of us in the world who do not eat meat.

I also look for low sodium alternatives which you seem to have eliminated.

Could you make one out of 5 offerings meatless?

Tamiams
3/3/2009 12:09 PM

The offer would be better if allowed to substitute the drinks provided.  Sometimes  I might want to get tea or hto chocolate; even if I have to pay a little more for it.

tribal_1
3/3/2009 12:27 PM

I like the idea. Especially since I often stop in my local SBX at 5:45 AM and I need something heartier than a pastry!  Thanks!!

3/3/2009 12:27 PM

I am happy to see Starbucks offering better food options, as well as the addition of the coffee and breakfast deal for $3.95.  I would REALLY love to see Starbucks cater to their vegetarian clientele, however.  There is virtually nothing besides pastries or sweet foods for the veggies of the world like myself.  The Artisan sandwiches look delicious...but can we just get one that has no meat?  Or one that is made with a vegetarian/vegan meat alternative, perhaps?  I think this would make a lot of people happy!  Thanks!!

MissMissy
3/3/2009 12:27 PM

I am puzzled by something....last year Mr. Schultz said it was time to go back to the basics. Focusing on the one product that made Starbucks what it is today....coffee. If I want a breakfast sandwich, I can go to McDonald's and get one for $1.00.  It is sad to say that after being a loyal customer since 1989, the quality and consistancy of the coffee drinks have gone downhill. The pastries are hard and dry and now I get to smell eggs when I go for my morning coffee. Did I mention that I hate eggs? Why not go back to what made you famous, consistently awesome coffee!! Leave the breakfast sandwiches to the fast food places.

suzyblue
3/3/2009 12:34 PM

I wish you had some vegetarian ones!  :(

zoonil
3/3/2009 12:35 PM

What?  No vegetarian options, except the Instant oatmeal paired with the latte?

I enjoy the Veggie-egg on multi-grain flatbread which DD offers, and sincerely hope Starbucks can offer as part of the above pairings at least 1 vegetarian and 1 vegan option.

Buka
3/3/2009 12:47 PM

What about a vegetarian sandwich?  I think one out of the four sandwiches should be vegetarian.  How about egg sandwiches with spinach? Nothing against carnivores.  Not particularly interested in eating oatmeal everytime I want a good value.  Just a thought.

Thanks!

klig
3/3/2009 12:47 PM

I truly hope these new breakfast sandwiches dont smell awful like the sandwiches taken off the menu.  I know several people who stopped coming to starbucks because the smell of those sandwiches made them feel ill.  I want to smell coffee when i walk into starbucks, not burnt ham and cheese.

fernc
3/3/2009 12:58 PM

Can we have some pairings with tea, or can we allowed to substitute tea for the coffee?

honeyimhome
3/3/2009 12:59 PM

i'm a chai tea drinker.....what deals do you have for me? I already spend WAY more than a regular coffee drinker (my drink is $4.20 a DAY).

Tulip
3/3/2009 1:01 PM

Great idea - but why four sandwiches that all have pork?  Leave the bacon off the turkey sandwich, and also add a veggie option.

sweetaphrodite
3/3/2009 1:01 PM

I also think that there should be a vegetarian option for the breakfast sandwich.  I like the oatmeal and muffins and cake but a nice egg sandwich without meat would be fantastic!

Thank you for listening!

jeapitz
3/3/2009 1:08 PM

I think it is a great offering.  This way, I can make only one stop in the morning- at my favorite barista!

rajni_79
3/3/2009 1:13 PM

What does starbucks have for people who dont eat beef or pork? All the sandwiches have ham and bacon :(

Parmie
3/3/2009 1:19 PM

Please please could you offer more Vegan options as it seems Starbucks are bringing more and more meat and egg options out and the same tired cheese is the only option available for vegans (plus most of the cheeses used have some meat product in them so alot of us cannot even eat those).

ArtM
3/3/2009 1:19 PM

Can you provide some clues as to what is in "parmesan egg frittata", besides cheese and egg?

Thanks,

Art

3/3/2009 1:27 PM

Great post MissMissy! Pre-made sandwiches don't inspire me. The Starbucks Experience over Black Forest Ham?  I'd be less put off by the food offerings if they weren't so heavily emphasized. The menus show big pictures of food, and you can hardly tell what coffee beans are there at the store. I think I'll take my Starbucks Experience with a black, liquidy substance that's hot and caffeinated. ;)

yibflores
3/3/2009 1:29 PM

I have tried some of these items in the northern california market and they were great. I hope this means it's coming to starbucks in texas. I am not a vegan but I do agree you should offer an alternative. Many times even some of us who are not vegans would prefer a meatless product.

zimfour
3/3/2009 1:32 PM

I just may try one for breakfast soon!  Sounds pretty tasty!

ryno106
3/3/2009 1:40 PM

I'm not vegan, and I know a vegan option is hard to offer on a massive scale, but certainly you could offer a vegetarian option that is just Egg + something else? I loved the Egg Florentine sandwich and ate it all the time when you guys offered it, but the wrap you offer now just isn't on par or as filling. Even going to McDonalds or any other random fast food place, I can ask them to just give me an egg and cheese sandwhich, which I can't do at starbucks, and honestly that's just kind of sad. I would much rather give my money to you instead of McDonald's, but you're not giving me the option to do so.

grudan
3/3/2009 1:43 PM

I agree - an option without meat would be great, both for vegetarians and for health/variety reasons.   It feels strange that a company like Starbucks wouldn't include such an option.

asu1987
3/3/2009 1:52 PM

I for one love the oatmeal and can eat it anytime of the day with my Chai Tea Latte or new tea infusion drinks and do. For me it is a better choice than the pastries. You have made me a happy camper. I too think it would be great if we could choose a drink like one of the teas, like also the Vanilla Rooibos, love this one too (and I work in a teahouse and purchase yours).  I tend to go to all the tea flavor drinks, not a big coffee drinker. To the comment of it not being a coffee shop anymore, customers need to realize that times are tough and business are trying other things to get business open and at the same time appealing to all pocket books.

piyushila
3/3/2009 1:58 PM

I think the pairing ideas is great except it is too limited in the options.  Why could one not pair a hot chocolate with a yoghurt for example?

Also, I agree with all the comments above where Starbucks needs to do more to cater to its vegetarian clientele.

marycaffeine
3/3/2009 2:08 PM

You need better pairing options with the latte. I like lattes but wouldn't pick either of the meal optiosn you're offering. Sandwiches should come with lattes too, even if it's a higher price point.

ress
3/3/2009 2:09 PM

I had the oatmeal - it was awful, as if the water wasn't hot enough when it was stirred in.  Tough to ruin a packet of instant oatmeal.  And I wasn't offered the "pairing" price as I had filter coffee instead of latte.

As you don't have a meatless offering I would be stuck with the oatmeal if I were to try breakfast at Starbucks again. Probably won't happen.

ratracesandra
3/3/2009 2:11 PM

Sounds like a wonderful idea and the price is certainly right!

I'll be sure to try the next time I am in.

I'm not a vegan, but I also agree that a "veggie" style breakfast sandwich would be a good idea.

skades
3/3/2009 2:12 PM

I was a bit offended that this new offer cannot be extended to Starbucks customers that DO NOT drink coffee.  I am a tea drinker and was only offered a Tall hot tea (cost $1.50) and yet a tall lattee cost abt $2.55.

I go to Starbucks almost everyday and order your oatmeal @ least 1 - 2 x a week and this was not a good thing for me!!!

Furthermore, whose idea was it to discontinue to Berry Chai Infusion?!  That is the best drink that you have created!!

disgruntled customer.  :0(

mamacoffee
3/3/2009 2:15 PM

you should be able to mix and match, latte or reg coffee with any of the food options.

jrssa
3/3/2009 2:31 PM

I think that you should offer more coupons to customers who have the starbucks card (not the credit card).  When you reload your card on line there should be incentives, for example, a free drink with each $20 or $30.

3/3/2009 2:39 PM

I wish that Starbucks would have at least one vegetarian sandwich available with this new offer.  Plus, I wish that Starbucks valued its tea drinkers like it does the coffee drinkers.  It seems unfair that coffee drinkers can get free refills, but I have to pay for iced tea refills.  I'm a gold card member and I go to Starbucks two to three times a day.

This is another typical attempt at a solution but comes up short

I am a black card holder and i go to starbucks 1-2 times a day.  In the AM i get the sprinach wrap and coffee (redeye or blackeye) and of course, your new 3.95 deal, meant to combat the deals from Dunkin Donuts dont complete the deal by omitting the spinach wrap.  When you look to create a special, why leave out the MOST popular breakfast sandwich.

thanx

3/3/2009 2:46 PM

I just wanted to add my voice to the surprisingly small number of vegetarians who might be interested in a new breakfast offering. I don't get food every morning when I stop for my coffee on the way to work, but there have also been plenty of times when I have.  I have also chose other options over Starbucks because I wanted a breakfast sandwich...

aprefer
3/3/2009 2:48 PM

On another note, your genuine lack of healthy breakfast foods leads one to believe that Starbucks doesnt care about our health...a new artisan bacon sandwich (hmm-how much cholesterol and how much salt and its processed meat ) a new artisan ham sandwich (see comment on last sandwich.  How about more healthy sandwiches like the spinach wrap.

tekkween
3/3/2009 2:49 PM

I think some people don't understand that the Turkey Bacon Sandwich is Turkey and not Turkey and Bacon.  It is a pretty good sandwich which it is not overcooked.  The eggs florentine was good too, but was taken off the menu.  Thank you for offering non-pork choices

LatteForMe
3/3/2009 2:52 PM

I can't wait to try the sandwiches. Finally something that isn't sweet when I need a little something to go with my coffee.  And it is offered all day long, not just until 10:00 am like McD's.  But for us Latte Only people (and tea people, etc.) why not just a different price or smaller size? Why do I have to eat oatmeal to get my "pairing price"? We Latte Lovers want sandwiches too!

As a tea drinker, it would be nice if we could substitute tea for the brewed coffee and a tea latte for a regular latte.

3/3/2009 3:16 PM

Just so you get the idea.... here is another vegetarian hoping for just a plain egg and cheese breakfast offering.  Just leave the ham or sausage out of some of these sandwiches.  Right now, I buy a latte and then go to Noah's Bagels across the street and buy a bagel with egg and cheddar.  I would buy this veggie option at Starbucks if given the choice.

aldiepie
3/3/2009 3:23 PM

You really should have a vegetarian breakfast sandwich. It does seem strange that a company like Starbucks wouldn't think to do that.

I agree with the vegetarian option, but also I think you should have an option with a non-coffee drink for those of us tea drinkers.

3/3/2009 3:40 PM

I am so excited to see this launched.  I used to eat these sandwiches for breakfast at my Bedford, Massachusetts Starbucks, but was sad to discover they have not come to Central Texas.  I tried to use the link from the announcement to discover if any of my local Starbucks will be offering them, but there was no criteria for Breakfast Sandwiches.  Someone needs to fix this before offering us the chance to search.  Just a thought.

grovemom
3/3/2009 3:42 PM

I agree with many of the others suggesting a vegetarian offering!  I used to love the florentine sandwich you had with the spinach... it was delicious, but it quickly disappeared.  We'd love to see it, or something else like it, back again!

3/3/2009 4:03 PM

Where's the veggie sandwhich? Us vegitarians like to eat too! Something with avocado, sprouts, tomatos, provolone  cheese and some yummy dressing or anything else like that would work.

3/3/2009 4:04 PM

This sounds great, I have eaten the sandwiches before and they are awesome, now we can get them with a coffee and it's cheap!  What is wrong with some of you complainers.  Does anything ever make you happy?

mrstarbucks007
3/3/2009 4:08 PM

I second the comments that have already been expressed here about the need to include a  vegetarian option.  How you could overlook this is beyond me...while you are at it , you should also include a vegan option as well.  Same goes for your desserts.  Your USA customers come from all sorts of diverse backgrounds some with specific relgious and/or dietary needs.  A lot of big food chain merchants in UK and Canada have gone to great lengths to make sure such options are included in their menus and tailor their advertising to reflect this.  Please reconsider, if not in all markets then at least in a select few that make sense. (i.e. San Francisco Bay Area).

3/3/2009 4:22 PM

I agree with those who are the "tea drinkers".  I don't drink coffee but do love Starbucks "Chai".  I also have a Starbucks reloadable card and it would be nice to have a few offerings for those who don't drink coffee but do like to go to Starbucks for some of the other things on the menu.  An incentive for reloading a Starbucks card would be great..."Sonic" does it.  Being able to substitute tea or hot chocolate for coffee with your "meal deals" would sure bring in more customers and help with "stimulating the economy".  :)

While I really enjoy the Reduced-fat Turkey Bacon sandwich, I hate the cost of buying one and an iced latte. When I saw the Pairings idea, I thought, "Wow, finally." Then I kept reading. Why offer unhealthy pairs together? A latte and a cinnamon roll? Come on! Long live iced lattes and low-fat, lower carb options!

Funny - a bunch of others beat me to the punch - WHERE are the VEG options in your breakfast sandwiches ?? Egg and cheese;  or egg, cheese and spinach; (but more than just one lonely leaf like you had on your Florentine sandwich)

Also, PLEASE put out the word to your baristas that "NO FOAM" really means NO FOAM, even for SOY drinks that foam up like crazy. I'm tired of having to ask twice. Thanks

short.

I love Starbuck and I get a tazo tea everyday. I think that when the store is slow from 9:30am till 11:00 I think you should have a everybody does better with breakfast happy hour and discout the sandwich and coffee tea oatmeal during that time period monday thru friday. the store is slow and the food is out so use it up you could limit it to first come first serve 50 people?  I would wait and add that to my ruotine every day.

3/3/2009 5:27 PM

The new meals are not vegan friendly. There are six options total, the only vegan option is a tall latte with a perfect oatmeal. And quite frankly, it doesn't even mention soy options, so maybe it's not vegan friendly! The other food options all include meat sandwiches, i.e. bacon, sausage, turkey and ham. I'm boo-ing the overall health factor too. Not much there but white starch, grease, cheese and meat.

Good price but how about something organic and vegan that has protein? Examples: hummus and bagel, bean & rice burrito, tofu-veggie scramble, seitan & veggies. Also, maybe it's time to start adding other organic, non-dairy choices besides soy? Examples: rice milk, hemp milk, almond milk. Yummy!

Although I was looking forward to your new breakfasts, the turkey-bacon egg sandwich is not something I would order again.  Too high cholesterol.  Turkey-bacon I thought meant turkey AND bacon; better than real bacon, but dried out and burned.  Good bread, and good cheese though.  Hopefully your food scientists will be rolling out a heart-healthier choice.  Maybe zero cholesterol egg (pure egg white, no yolk)?   Would be tempted to buy it every weekday if you come up with something good.  Also, the price was about right, though I upgraded to Venti!
