Vegetarian Options

Hi, it’s Megan (sbx_mdro) from the food team!

There has been a lot of buzz on MSI about vegetarian options and the importance of offering them in our stores. I want to let you know that we definitely hear you and are always looking for the best way to offer great food that fits your lifestyle. I thought I would take this time to let you know about the great vegetarian options we currently offer and get some feedback from you on what other vegetarian options you’d like to see. (We consider vegetarian to be a meat-free diet. Some of these items do contain eggs and milk.)

Here are some great options you can find in your participating Starbucks stores, across the U.S.:

• Spinach Feta Wrap with spinach, roasted tomato, feta and egg, wrapped in a wheat lavosh
• Portobello Mushroom Piadini, A delicious combination of portabella mushrooms, spinach, creamy feta and ricotta cheeses, and fluffy eggs
• Perfect Oatmeal, a bowl of 100% whole grain oatmeal finished with your choice of dried fruit, nut medley or brown sugar
• Power Protein Plate, a plate with cheddar cheese, hard boiled, cage-free egg, grapes, apple slices, whole-wheat bagel and peanut butter
• Fruit and Cheese Plate, a plate with apples, grapes, brie, asiago and medium cheddar cheese with Carr’s® crackers
• Egg Salad Sandwich, egg salad lightly seasoned with dill and mustard, garnished with lettuce on multigrain bread
• Greek Yogurt Parfait reduced fat Greek yogurt topped with coconut-almond macaroon granola, pumpkin seeds and dried cranberries.
• Peachy Raspberry Yogurt Parfait, fat-free yogurt with real fruit, topped with crunchy granola
• Strawberry and Blueberry Yogurt Parfait, fat-free yogurt with real fruit, topped with crunchy granola
• Fruit Cup, a seasonally available cup of fresh fruit

Coming Soon! Watch for this new sandwich offering in April:
• Roasted Tomato and Mozzarella, with basil pesto and fresh spinach on a piccolo roll

Of course, most of our pastry case is filled with vegetarian options. One of my morning favorites is the Apple Bran Muffin, which has a good source of fiber, hearty grains, dried cherries and baked apples. We also just launched two new offerings, Luscious Lemon Tart and Strawberry Rhubarb Crumble. Both of these are great for any time of the day and pair well with our coffee.

You’ll be the first to know when we launch new vegetarian offerings, so keep watching here on MSI. Hopefully I was able to show you some new things you’ll want to try. In the meantime, let us know other vegetarian ideas. The food team is very interested to hear what is important to you.

It would also be nice if you would think about Vegan options (no egg or milk). Of the items listed there are still only TWO that fit the bill (Fruit & Oatmeal).

like bringing back your vegan brownie that was always sold out where I live - why was it discontinued if it was always selling?  This calls for more vegan friendly menu options

It would be nice to have a egg white sandwich with sprouts and veggies and also a grilled veggie sandwich. Another option would be a sandwich using Quorn. This product is great and makes a wonderful meat free chicken salad or can be used as a patty with lettuce, tomato and perhaps cucumber.

Most of these are sweet options (the easy way out). I would love to see an egg sandwich *without* parmesan, asiago or feta or one of those horrible stinky cheeses. How about doing the pitadini with cheddar instead, or making a cheddar and egg hot sandwich on a bagel or baguette? I won't buy the overpriced crackers and fruit plates, but please rethink the overuse of feta, asiago and parmesan. Many of us hate the way those cheeses smell and taste and have no options as you shove it in everything for vegetarians (meat eaters get options like cheddar). I hope you have no parmesan in the otherwise interesting sounding mozzarella and tomato sandwich--pesto can be made without it and is infinitely better that way.

what's a coffreehouse doing selling bacon and ham sandwiches in the first place? leave the meat for mcdonalds to slaughter and package! if you want to go 'green' and be and environmentally and socially conscious company, go vegetarain all the way.

I'm a HUGE fan of the Power Protein Plate. This is one of the best options available at the store. Thanks! :D

I'd love some more vegan options as well. The oatmeal is ok (as instant oatmeal goes) but there are amazing vegan cakes and breads and other fair that would compliment my espresso so much better.

I am gluten-free and vegetarian, so except for the fruit plate, none of those options will help me. I  hope you consider getting ONE interesting vegetarian option that doesn't involve so much bread. Also, because gluten makes me sick, I hate stores that smell like "freshly baked bread" and hope that you don't continue to increase the volume of bread production- I want a coffeeshop to smell like coffee, not something that makes me sick.

The egg salad sandwich, and the yogurt parfaits (excluding the new greek yogurt one) contain gelatin. Not vegetarian, and they are foods even experienced vegetarians wouldn't expect to contain gelatin.

I wish that there were simply "meatless" options.  There was a simply delicious breakfast sandwich (Florentine sandwich) that was discontinued.  If there was at least an egg and no meat option, it'd be a morning life-saver on the way into work.

Ditto on the vegan options, the brownies in particular. While not a Vegan myself, I have a dairy allergy. Why doesn't anyone make a vegan doughnut? At any rate, vegan & dairy free options would be great.

I'm a really big fan of the spinach feta wrap. While I've never tried the portabello piadini, (as Im not too sure how keen I am on mushrooms) I wouldnt be apposed to it. I was unaware of the greek parfait though, it sounds amazing. I do love the vegetarian options. I'd try the power protein plate but I hate hard boiled eggs.

I'm assuming these options are only for the lower 48, right? I have yet to see any fresh fruit or cheese or sandwiches (other than the new ones) at ANY store in anchorage. the stores I frequent have oatmeal and pastries- that's it.

@Corriem29: gelatin doesn't have to be animal-based.

Can we get confirmation that those items are actually vegetarian?

(Also, a hearty "hear, hear!" for kafka26's comment)

vegan options would be amazing! and by the looks of the rest of the comments, i'm not the only one that thinks so!

i also have to agree with an earlier comment that you shouldn't be offering any meat products at all in a coffee house, it's the best way to be green! all your products should be at least vegetarian

Vegetarian options would be great and an obvious and morally and environmentally good choice, however I believe only one of those choices you listed was Vegan...thats not so cool.

I also would like to know if it is true that the egg salad sandwich has gelatin in it. Am totally surprised if it does. Would like to see more options that do not have egg or cheese. And yes you can get gelatin that is not animal based.

I think offering a vegetarian breakfast sandwich, similar to your others, would be great. Maybe just egg and cheddar, or maybe even find a veggie sausage patty to use. The problem with many of your current vegetarian offerings is that they are very high in sugar and calories.

I have almost perfected a VEGAN piadini recipe that I think would be successful. It would be such a life saver for starving vegan partners who want something more substantial than oatmeal and fruit as well as draw in a lot more people to the warming sandwiches.

I was very disappointed when you discontinued the florentine breakfast sandwich. It was the best one you offered (even before I became a vegetarian), and the spinach feta wrap is NO substitute.

I have a dairy allergy and am vegan. I loved Starbucks even before I was either of those things but now it's nice to have a place where I know I'll always be able to get a soy latte. I love fruit and oatmeal but it would be great  to have other vegan/non-dairy options there as well.  Thanks for passing along the information about vegetarian options and letting us voice our requests :)

As I mentioned in another thread, to my surprise there is gelatin in the egg salad sandwich. Shame on you starbucks! If you have to put gelatin in the sandwich (which I am not sure you have to), please use nonanimal gelatin.

Vegetarian (and vegan) options are more and more important to a lot of people.  Efforts should be made to reflect this on the SBUX menu.  The Power Protein Plate is a good one, although some different fruits would be nicer than the basic apples and grapes.  What about strawberries (good shelf-life), blueberries (good shelf-life), pears, or pineapple?  What about a plate that includes veggies?  Bringing back the Floretine sandwich would be nice too.

THANK YOU FOR:

- power protein plate.  Nice light meal!!!  Very well thought out, down to the salt for the egg.  suggestion, a fairly minor point: see if you can find a peanut butter that does not have any added oil, or at least not saturated fat.

- Greek yoghurt.  Very tastey, and it's so great to finally have a yoghurt that TASTES like yoghurt!!!  Not the best Greek yoghurt I've had - you could do better - but it's VERY good.

What about offering two non-dairy options for coffee? There is soy milk, but it would be so nice to have rice milk as an option. It's naturally a bit sweet, and more plain tasting than soy. It lets the real flavor of the coffee come through better than the soy does.

Also, ditto for more vegan offerings.  The oatmeal is a great lifesaver, though!

Maybe think about alternative sweeteners...instead of just brown sugar, how about sucanat? Agave nectar is fabulous, too.

I'm vegan because it's just better for my body and for the planet. You're a huge company, so anything you can do to keep it mostly vegetarian and vegan would be awesome.

Your cookies, though, are horrible. Five hundred bajillion calories, and the taste just isn't there. You need to check out the Community Mercantile's vegan peanut butter/oatmeal/chocolate chip cookie (Lawrence, KS). They can't keep those things on the shelf because they taste so much better than the ones that use eggs & butter. No joke! It'd be a perfect match for Starbucks!!

Hey, I'm sure that you'll hear this a lot, but Vegan!! More Vegan please! Remember the Crunchy Veggie Wrap we had a few years ago? That would be perfect if you just replaced the Sundried tomato cream cheese with a Sundried tomato hummus. And as a chilled meal, what about Taboulle? There are so many options that we have. The only national pastry item we have that's vegan is bagels? How about pushing our suppliers to use fruit pectin instead of gelatin in the Crispy Marshmallow Bars?

Vegan is not only great for you, but it's great for the environment. Meat-based meals on average have a carbon footprint 20x greater than a vegan meal. Just some food for thought- what better way to take the next step into Starbucks Shared Planetâ„¢!

Hi Megan (sbx_mdro).  12 seconds or less, I have a FANTASTIC local company to recommend for both Vegan and Vegetarian tarts.  Launched at the Portland Farmer's Market and now sold at several boutique locations these savory items are seriously amazing. Visit www.littlepotsandpans.com to check them out.

I am with Jenny703, non-dairy/vegan snacks and additional non-dairy choices for drinks would be appreciated.  My family has issues with milk/soy/egg which means that there is very little we can get at Starbucks these days.  I would love to see rice or hemp milk. Almond milk is lovely but the tree nut issue is certainly a problem with shared steaming wands.

This momma needs a latte or a mocha...badly.

I'm at Starbucks once a day and it's impossible for me to eat there. I just order the oatmeal and fruit which is brilliant, but that's the only option. Without a doubt Starbucks needs vegan options.

Whenever I see those bacon & egg breakfast patties in the glass it makes me a little sick.  Totally makes me feel like I'm standing at McDonald's for a second. I can smell them cooking at any starbucks when someone orders one and leaves a stinky oil odor instead of fresh coffee.

With all the wonderful vegan treats sold all over the US, I find it hard to believe Starbucks can't whip up two or three options for those of us who understand nutrition, are environmentally and socially conscious  and therefore don't consume meat or dairy. Even the meat eaters of the world would probably give it a shot if it were tasty enough!

Even though  there are some vegetarian options, it is not enough.  I would like to see more vegetarian sandwich options.  Sweets usually are vegetarian (with eggs and milk products).  I am getting a venti soy chai almost every day.  If there were more vegetarian sandwiches I would also get the sandwich as well.   Now there is the mozzarella & tomato sandwich (again) which is great but the portobello goat chesse sandwich seems to have disappeared.  How about a Brie and pear sandwich (or something like that )?   There are so many possibilities for a creative chef to develop it - get on it!!!  The egg salad sandwich does not do it.  And why are there 5 different sandwiches with turkey?

Also more whole grain options in the sandwich bread would be an improvement!

But the soy chai is awesome!

I'm very disappointed with the discontinuation of the egg florentine sandwich.  I use to go to Starbucks a few days a week, just for that sammi and additionally would get a latte.  When I heard that the sandwich would be discontinued I sent e-mails, left comment cards even spoke to the corporate peeps visiting our Anchorage AK store from Seattle, to no avail.  The spinach feta wrap is a very poor replacement, it just doesn't suite my taste.  I now go to the coffee joint across the street because they offer a meatless english muffin egg sandwich but I would much rather be eating and drinking Starbucks.  I don't understand why, just this one sandwich, would be discontinued.  Makes be feel like my business isn't valuable.  I could understand if all sandwiches were being discontinued but just this one? and replaced with a wrap?  I spoke to the store manager to see if the florentines were just not selling (which I thought would be odd since often times when I would go in a bit later in the morning they would be sold out) and they confirmed that the florentine was one of the best sellers.  Please oh PLEASE, bring them back and I will come back often, like I use to :)  Please and thank you.

Glad to see that you are listening to customers. I give you props! However, what about all of us Vegans? The Fruit Cup is overpriced and my Starbucks is always out of them anyway. Being a Vegan I stock up on produce weekly and don't have the need to buy it elsewhere. The Oatmeal is a good option, but again its way overpriced and its not even a full serving of Oatmeal! I only purchased the Oatmeal once when I was in a pinch for breakfast and I was very disappointed with it.

Please help all of us Vegans who would like a Yummy snack to go with our Soy Lattes!

Thank You

I wanted to ask about the nutritional value in the low fat turkey bacon breakfast sandwich, I always order it with the cheese taken off and would love to know what that change does to the values on the web site.

Being a vegetarian over 32 years, I was excited to finally see yogurt parfaits at Starbucks, but the yogurt used contains gelatin, which is made from bone marrow and/or ani mal hooves.  Any other alternative ?

You have a wole world of vegans out there that would kill for a VEGAN option other than oatmeal. Don't get me wrong, I love my oatmeal but a tasty treat would be so welcome. Both my daughter and I frequent Starbucks every day. WE don't want to go to Whole Foods for our CC scones.

Aside from that I think that you might try a spinach wrap with a pesto base.  ALways a vegetarian fav.

A real vegan option please!

Pesto Veggie Sandwich

Vegan muffins

Vegan doughnuts (made with soymilk--not hard!)

Spinach Veggie Wrap with Pesto Base (as suggested above)

It's not out of the realm of possibility. The stuff stays fresh longer too as there's no meat, dairy, or egg to spoil quickly.

It really is a no-brainer, guys.

I agree completely: there need to be a significant number of wholesome vegan options in the stores. If they existed, I would be likely to patronize SBUX; instead, I go to local establishments that offer real food.

The current breakfast sandwiches (at least the only two that are veg) are made with very low-quality ingredients and are positively revolting. Actually, ALL of the breakfast sandwiches are embarrassingly awful. Please get rid of all of them and bring in food (hot or cold) made with real ingredients.

REAL ingredients are NOT fat-free; there is no such thing as a cow that produces low-fat or fat-free milk, anymore than a chicken produces eggs without yolks. Eating these altered products encourages dissatisfaction and over-consumption. Serve products that are naturally full-flavored (like your espresso beverages used to be before you decided to cut costs) and people will be satisfied.

I would love more or different egg vegetarian sandwiches. I do have the spinach feta wrap and the portabello piadini every once in awhile, but they are not very good... I know you can do better than that!

I don't like havig oatmeal or pastries for breakfast. If you had a good veggie egg sandwich, I would get one at least 3 mornings/wk.

I LOVE the new vegetarian options! Thank you! I especially like the power protein plate...it tastes great and is filling, and healthy. The greek yogurt sounds great, I haven't tried it yet.

The oatmeal--I usually love oatmeal. However, whenever I have gotten oatmeal at Starbucks (from the Highland Park, IL store), it has been watery. And I can tell it's instant oatmeal because of that. The first time I got it, I was disappointed. I figured it was a mistake, but it's always like that. When I say watery, I mean really soup-like--not the way oatmeal is supposed to be.

Other than the oatmeal, the new options are great! Thank you!
