What's Brewing this Month?

Hi Brewed Coffee Lovers!

My name is Colin and I work on the brewed coffee team. As you know, we recorded ideas on 12second.tv at the Shareholders meeting, and there was a really great idea about Brewed Coffee and posting online which coffees would be offered each week. Check out the video below:

What a great idea by a very passionate shareholder! Starting with the month of April, we will plan to post the Weekly Brewed Coffee Calendar on a monthly or promotional basis, showcasing which coffee we will be brewing in store as Today’s Morning Pick (the bolder offering). We pick these coffees for you to enjoy based on customer and partner favorites, and seasonal relevance. So come on in to your local store and enjoy a fresh hot cup of Sumatra, Caffè Verona®, or Ethiopia Sidamo® in the month of April!   Here's the Brewed Coffee Calendar for this month:

April 6-19: Sumatra

Flavor: Intensely earthy and aromatic

Description: Earthy and unpredictable, Sumatra has a full, syrupy body with virtually no acidity - so the coffee's intensity lingers in your mouth. The concentrated spicy, herbal notes and earthy aroma are the telltale signatures of this well-loved coffee.

April 20-26: Verona®

Flavor: Rich, smooth, and slightly sweet

Description: Full bodied, complex with depth and sweetness. Because this coffee pairs so well with chocolate, it has become a Valentine’s Day Favorite!

April 27-May 4: Ethiopia Sidamo®

Flavor: Complex, distinctively lemon flavor

Description: Delicate and complex. Ethiopia Sidamo® has a floral aroma, medium body and distinctive lemon flavor.
As the historic birthplace of coffee, Ethiopia is rich in coffee tradition. Many Ethiopians have daily coffee ceremonies to elevate and celebrate coffee as their gift to the world.

"Today’s Morning Pick (the bolder offering)." Would you kindly eloborate on this statement. If I understood SBX_Bean correctly there would be better communication to the stores about offering "bold drip coffee", on demand, of course, "all day". Stating that the "bold offering" is "the morning pick" is quite a confusing statement to sort out for the barista's, stores and customers alike. It just reinforces the notion that $tarbucks has no intentions of gladly brewing "bold" coffee with no fuss, no muss. Obviously. Your message is loud and clear.

That is SUCH a good point Breve. It's one more vocabulary/communication problem that stores have. Starbucks has set out systematically (probably unintentionally) come up with words that tell baristas that you do NOT brew coffee after noon.

"Lean"  (Coffee is scare)

"Morning pick" (Coffee is ONLY for the morning hours)

"Demand" (you don't have to offer, just wait and see if the customer will get demanding)

"Waste" (Don't brew coffee; it's wasteful)

"Pike Place Roast is Bold" (We know that's just a lie.)

Coffee variance must be tightly controlled.

When I'm in the stores, I make a point of asking about the "coffee of the week" rather than using the words "morning pick" because I refuse to validate those insulting words.

Well I just try to avoid the words "morning pick" as much as possible. Colin please know despite my ranting, it isn't directed at you or the MSI team personally.

Hello,

Didn't Starbucks.com used to list the coffees of the week awhile ago?

Is this only going to be on mystarbucksidea.com?  I checked Starbucks.com and didn't see anything yet.

Thank you.

Ohhh I am glad you caught that Breve and Melody. So true!

TheKwan, I think they used to be listed.

"Today’s Morning Pick (the bolder offering)"

"So come on in to your local store and enjoy a fresh hot cup of Sumatra, Caffè Verona®, or Ethiopia

How about that making that choice available  all day instead of  just in the morning?

Hi guys,

Thanks for the comments back.

While the name Today’s Morning Pick has been in use for the past year to describe the rotating coffee selection, you’ll be glad to know that we are in the process of reviewing a name change for it. The new name would more accurately reflect the fact that these are bolder coffees, and would not suggest a limitation in time of day served.

@TheKwan - We are looking into listing the calendar on Starbucks.com/coffee and will report back progress.

Thanks for the great dialogue.

-Colin

I am so happy to hear this news! A rotating coffee selection is what we have been hoping for. Sumatra is my fav (actually the Aged Sumatra) but also like Verona. Today I went to my local SBX and saw PRP & Anniversary Blend on the board as Morning Pick. I ordered a tall Anniversary Blend and was told they were not brewing that now. I was there abt 2pm. They stopped AT NOON but forgot to change the board. I was sooo disappointed. Had to settle for an Americano :(

Colin, at stores that serve it all day, you can call it

"This Week's Bold Drip Coffee"

or

"This Week's Dark Roast Drip Coffee"

At the morning-only shop, use:

"This Week's Bold Morning Coffee"

or

"This Week's Dark Roast Morning Coffee"

Every store should be communicating this more clearly.

I hear endlessly from people who think they don't like Starbucks coffee, when they really just don't like Pike.

I would object to any further continuation of the word "morning".  How about "Core Coffee Choice"?   (Since it usually comes from the 6 core coffees - at least I think there are 6 of them).

Thank you, Momiji and Colin.

I'm looking forward to what's "in store", pun intended.

-- Regarding reducing waste, can just half of the (usual) quantity be brewed, since coffee is supposed to be brewed fresh every 30 minutes?  I'm sure there's a reason that it's not feasible, but from a non-barista...

Depending upon the coffee...

"Today's premium core select drip"

"Today's premium seasonal select drip"

I always order the NOT Pike.  Bold robust coffee is the reason I stop in... morning, noon or night.

@Colin, Is this communication going to be directed to both licensed and corporate stores?

Just yesterday the chalkboard at a licensed store inside of my local Albertsons clearly stated "bold offering and PPR decaf" until noon only. Ughh! That sign just got under my skin....

Colin, how about regularly, at every store, make the choice clear.  It does not matter what you call it.

How about:

Today's Drip Coffees:

- Pike Place (Medium Roast).

- Sumatra (Dark Roast)

Right now Pike is always served by default and this is a huge missed opportunity for you:  Folks that like darker roasts coffee will not know that you offer that either as a drip option or even as whole beans to use at home.

Your insistence on standardizing on Pike Place, rather than simply offering Pike as an option, seems incredibly self-destructive.

I love to have different blends. Please recommend list in your directories which stores will have a medium and bold bend all day.  If all I have to look forward to in the afternoon is Pike Roast, it's not worth driving past the 7 Eleven or the McDonalds and the list goes on.

Starbucks is the best but bad ideas can cause the public to loose site of that.

I've seen it mentioned on MSI that your partners prefer Sumatra.  Your polls here show that the MSI users prefer Sumatra to Pike Place Roast two to one.  Why not make Sumatra your standard offering all day long and rotate the other twenty non-decaf blends (including PPR) through?  Is this so complicated to understand?  How about more frequent (daily) rotations?  Most of us frequent Starbucks multiple times a week and having the same blend every day can get old.
