Poll Results: Which Cup do you Use at Starbucks?

Reusable cups, recycling, and for-here cups have been popular at My Starbucks Idea.  Many customers and partners have told us they would like recycling available at Starbucks.  We’re working on it.  Currently 70% of our stores where we control waste pick-up are recycling.  We continue to look for ways to make this happen in more of our locations.  We’ve also set a goal – by 2015 100% of our cups will be reusable or recyclable. Visit www.starbucks.com/sharedplanet to learn more.

Recently I asked the MSI community what kind of cup do you use at Starbucks? Here are the results:

At Starbucks I use...

The Starbucks Cup - 64%

Did you know that Starbucks helped pioneer the industry’s first hot beverage cup with 10 percent post-consumer fiber (PCF)?  Since adding the new PCF cups to stores in the U.S. and Canada in 2006, we’ve saved more than 44,000 tons of virgin wood fiber, the equivalent of more than 300,000 trees.  These cups are recyclable in some cities, like Seattle, and compostable in others, like San Francisco.

For-here Cups – 12%

Starbucks company-operated stores offer "for here" cups.  We have porcelain and glassware available for all sizes.  Just ask your barista if you would like your drink "for here".

Reusable Tumblers – 24%

We also offer reusable tumblers for sale in all sizes.  Pick the one that is right for you.  If you enjoy cold beverages starting next month the popular reusable cold cup will be available in the Grande (16 oz.) size and new this year a Venti (20 oz. tumbler) will be available.  We also currently have reusable tumblers with post-consumer recycled content in all sizes from Short to Venti!

Some of you have let us know that the cup discount isn't communicated very well.  We have now added it back to the menu board in company-owned stores and currently on our home page at Starbucks.com we have a great video to help get the word out.  One way you can help with reducing the amount of paper or plastic cups used is to use a reusable cup and when you bring your own, we'll give you 10 cents off at company-owned stores.

sbx_bean, you seem like a nice lady.  But clearly you've drunk the Starbucks punch one too many times.

It's all empty rhetoric.  It's all "blah, blah, blah. . . "

Hi there sbx_bean!  You know I remember reading in Pour Your Heart Into It that there was a time, long long ago, when Howard Schultz was just first developing Starbucks and he toyed with the idea of not having any paper cups at all!! Can you imagine that? Get your latte for-here or not at all! LOL. Of course he quickly saw that there had to be paper cups!

Thanks for the interesting poll.  I hope Starbucks can figure out some way to really persuade people to use tumblers and fewer papercups.  I ran into a friend yesterday who I know starts every morning with a skinny vanilla latte from Key Tower.  I saw the latte in her hand and I started in with, "Heather if you use a personal tumbler, you can save ..." and she (a big smile in her voice) says, "Melody don't you even get started with me ..."  I love her dearly, but we just can't change so many customers' very fixed morning habits.  For her, it's a grande skinny vanilla latte in a paper cup every morning Monday through Friday.

my question is, if i bring in my own tumbler that's, say, 20 oz., and i get a tall, does that work? can they just fill it up the right amount? it seems foolish to have to have all size tumblers just in case you want a certain size!

sbx_bean

@loveskimlattes - that should work.  Let your barista know you want a smaller size.  Thanks for bringing in your own tumbler!

I think that a good way to promote more customers using their own tumbler would be to promote the idea that you get a 10 cent discount if you bring your own mug. i work at a starbucks, and when i tell my customers about this discount that they are recieving , you'd be suprised at how many of them had now idea about this benefit.

How about corn plastic tumblers? PET plastics are not good for anyone and not recyclage. PLA plastic is compostable and non toxic. Check out Cornmug.com

Whenever I buy a to-go-latte, I take the empty cup home, wash it and put it in my recycling bin.  Some of them I use again, just to save waste.  I have tried to buy my own to-go mug but have yet to find one that fits my cup holder/style/hand size etc.  I do wish the baristas in all Starbucks  would automatically ask whether the drink is "for here".  If yes, a washable cup should be offered.

What I like about Starbucks is that no matter which location, whether in Seattle, Tacoma, Portland, Zuerich Switzerland or Auckland New Zealand, I know how to order and I know I will get what I expect.

Thank you!

I enjoy my drink in a mug in the store. However, at most stores there is a reluctance to serve the drinks in the mugs and I usually feel like I am asking the barista to do something above and beyond what I should expect.  And, it is never offered. The coffee and the caps taste so much better in mugs!

24 % is more than I expected, though this population may be biased in that direction.

Based on data from Starbucks card users, what % use a re-usable mug for at least 25% of purchases?  50%?  (should be an easy number to tease out)  What about as a % of non-card sales?  Are gold card members more likely to use mugs?

And would you please introduce an insulate ceramic lined tumble or mug with a well sealed lid (no sippy cup!!) in a grande or venti size.

Nothing tastes better than coffee in a ceramic mug.

Being a true Starbucks supporter (I go everyday for a cup whether hot or cold) I have brought in my own cup for years and had it filled to my exact size (tall, grande, or venti). I was in the other day and ordered my usual of a venti cold drink and another customer came in and was offered an extra shot at no charge??? I had to pay for mine.  I have been a card carrying person since they came out including being a gold member and there are no extra benefits except a discount at the register. Maybe you can start there.

Having an employee of the month is fine, but they wear no name tags. I then was thinking of maybe having a Starbucks day, come in and try a tall on us??

When will the Venti size tumblers be available?  I found the Grande size, but my stores do not have the Venti size . . . of course if I downgrade to a Venti, it could save me some $, but I like my Venti cold drinks.

Yes, that was supposed to be "downgrade to a Grande," not Venti (my fingers were going faster than my brain . . . I must need caffeine!

I like to be very green and bring back my cups and carry trays back each time I visit my Starbucks, which is every single day.  I use the Venti cups and they are very strong and durable.

Great Idea. You should think about donating the left over pastries at the end of the day instead of throwing them in the trash. I am so surprised at Starbucks for trashing perfectly good food, when your community food banks would be greatful to receive them! Shame on you!

I saw the new cold drink tumblers in the store this morning.  I would have bought one had i known that they are BPA free.  Didn't know that until i saw it online.  you should promote that in the display.

I bought two of the new "venti" iced drink reuseable cups referred to in your post.  I was disappointed to find that the cups have a 20 oz. capacity.  An iced mocha is 24 oz.  Why are you selling a cup specifically designed for a venti iced drink that holds 4 oz. less than the disposable cup?

sbx_bean
5/13/2009 12:49 PM

@i_d_clare:  Check out the May 11 blog,

"While our standard disposable plastic cup is 24 ounces, drinks made for the Venti reusable cold cup will require a little less ice due to its smaller size. But do not fear-- the cup comes with permanent fill lines to guide baristas on the perfect drink proportions, so your beverage will be made just right.  The double-wall protection keeps your hands dry and your beverage chilled."

With the double wall construction if the cup volume was 24 oz, it is huge and then there would be issues about not fitting into cupholders, etc.  You'll still get the same volume of product, just less ice.

$15 is WAY TOO much!!!! If Starbucks is encouraging going green, then they should do it without the corporate greed! They can sell these a make a small profit; they don't need to charge that much for a cup that cost them $1.95!! It seems their corporate greed is more important than their social responsibility! Rhetorical language is nothing more than empty words. What about some true social responsibility?  Sadly, people have been blinded to the "power" of Starbucks and are willing to pay such exorbitant prices for a cup!  Starbucks should be ashamed of themselves!!  There's supply and demand and then there's corporate greed!  Starbucks has become a symbol for corporate greed.

I would love to have one of the new Venti Double-Walled cups but the stores here in Indy sell out in minutes. When will they be available from the on-line store?

To: sbx_bean,

First, I 2nd BNewt's question.

Second question... If I get the 20 oz. cold tumbler, you say that with an iced coffee, "You'll still get the same volume of product, just less ice".  How does that work with a Frappucino?  The ice makes the volume of the drink.  Sure, I can get the same amount of coffee, but will it be the right consistency, and will it be as satisfying in Frappucino form when it's 4 oz. less?  Somehow, I have my doubts.

Any thoughts?

As a barista in Sacramento, CA, the iced tumblers sell out BEFORE even being put on the shelves! The partners set them aside to purchase for themselves or family member and our customers are complaining that we never have any. I got the grande tumbler from last year and I love it. I would love to buy the venti one but we never have any.  Please, please send more shipments, more often.

I LOVE the reusable cold tumblers and have two and a half. (2 grande and 1/2 venti)  I dropped my venti cold tumbler and the plastic cracked around the sealed edges of lip of the cup. I tried to go to my local Starbucks to purchase another one only to find out they are completely sold out. I found that I could purchase one on ebay for the whopping price of $45 and higher.  Is anyone as aggravated as I am, that these cups that should be used for the sake of our environment has become yet another way for scalpers to make a quick buck by charging exhorbitant prices??? As much as I want a new Venti cold tumbler I refuse to play into this greed and instead will continue to use my broken venti tumbler until it's no longer usable. Why can't Starbucks make enough of these cold, to-go tumblers available to the public in order to avoid these scam artists and help our environment at the same time??? I just about guarantee that, as popular as they are, Starbucks would be raking in the cash by just having enough of these in stock to go around to everyone who wants them, rather than all that money going to ebayers who take advantage of the popularity of these cups.

C'mon guys @ Starbucks! .....a little more control over the people not letting the cups get to the masses. It would surely help by producing a "Few" more.

Please bring in recycling at Starbucks.  Currently I have my local store save all of their paper and I pick it up every few days since they have no way to recycle.  They really need to have some sort of paper, plastic, cardboard pickup at minimum.

Hi there! My name is Caleb and I currently attending Southwestern Michigan College and my Business group is doing a project about going green with coffee beans. I have been searching the internet for hours on end and I cannot find the current estimates that Starbucks© charges for just a cup, or how much they are charged for the cups they purchase from manufacturers. We are thinking about, not just recycled cups, but steel coffee cans and I wanted to know they estimates and differences in the prices between the two. I hope you can answer my question!

Does anyone know when the iced reusable cups go on sale at stores or online?

I like everyone else want to know when the cold drink tumberlers are going to be available. I'm sure that each of the 11,000 stores in the USA could sell a hundred of these in a week. With the usual markup of 100%. Starbucks would 7.50 on these 110000 cups. I just made them 858,000.00. Maybe they will send me some free cups. Don't know what they are thinking but this is not a supply and demand consideration. This is a cool cup and most of us will buy because the cup will not sweat. Yes the logo is cool but maybe Starbucks needs to rethink this one. I like to give them to patients.
