Brewed Coffee Calendar – Bold Pick of the Day

Colin from the brewed team here. I wanted to share some changes we’re making to help customers better understand their brewed coffee choices. Starting today, 6/29, all of our U.S. Company-Operated and Licensed Stores will begin displaying new signage reflecting a change in name from Today’s Morning Pick to Bold Pick of the Day for our “bolder” coffee offering. The new name and updated signage will mean much clearer messaging around choice of brewed coffee. We are changing the name because we’ve received feedback that the former name did not fully communicate the fact that the coffees on our rotating calendar are among our bolder and more complex coffees. The new name also helps clarify that the offering isn’t only available in the morning, as many stores will brew the Bold Pick of the Day well into the afternoon. Stores with lower customer demand may elect to brew on request after noon. Stores will still be rotating this coffee on a weekly basis and as usual, I am excited to post the second half of the Summer Brewed Coffee Calendar below. One noteworthy addition this summer is Gazebo Blend®.  It’s one of my favorites and we’ll be brewing it for only two weeks.  So, come on in and grab a cup today and take home a pound home with you!

Week 1: 6/30-7/5
Gazebo Blend®
A medium-bodied blend of East African coffees, with crisp, clean acidity and floral, fruity flavor notes.

Week 2: 7/6-7/12
Café Estima Blend®
Our rich and roasty-sweet combination of Fair Trade Certified™ coffees is from Latin America and East Africa, and it shows just how delicious it can be to turn beliefs into actions. This is good coffee doing good things for the farmers who grew it.
The sweetness of this coffee is achieved through a slightly darker roast. It’s a full-bodied, well-balanced coffee with great versatility, something that is equally at home in your press, drip brewer or espresso machine.

Week 3: 7/13-7/19
Sumatra
A partner (employee) favorite. This coffee is the one single-origin offering that we most often choose to enjoy at home, after we take off the green apron.
Why do we love it so? It has a full, buttery body with virtually no acidity, so the coffee’s intensity and flavor simply lingers on your tongue. Make no mistake, this is a slurping coffee. At its best, there’s no mistaking the concentrated herbal notes and earthy aroma – telltale marks this beloved brew have left on our shirts and our hearts.

Week 4: 7/20-7/26
Gazebo Blend®

Week 5: 7/27-8/2
Sumatra

Week 6: 8/3-8/9
Gold Coast Blend®
Just like the city of Chicago, which it celebrates. In 1987, as Starbucks opened its first stores in the Second City, our coffee artists created a blend that would stand up to the coldest winds off Lake Michigan.
The source of this blend’s bigness is a secret recipe of Latin America, Asia/Pacific and dark roast coffees. The interplay of these very different coffees weaves a deep and densely rich, complex taste, with waves of flavor unfolding as you drink it.
Because of its great depth, this coffee is a fun one to pair foods with. Here are four flavors that can hold their own next to it: tangy cranberry, woodsy maple, buttery-sweet caramel and dense cheesecake.

Week 7: 8/10-8/16
Sumatra

Week 8: 8/17-8/23
Caffè Verona®
Caffè Verona® is a seductive blend of beans from Latin America and Indonesia, with a gentle touch of Italian Roast lending depth, soul and sweetness.

Week 9: 8/24-8/30

Sumatra

Why not a week of the new Rwanda?

Years ago it was common practice to brew new releases for the first week or two. I am sure that it would promote sales.

Sampling is a waste of good coffee, too many sample drinkers (and eaters) do not appreciate the finer points of coffee--they are just going for the "freebe".

Glad to see to the name change. I'm very tired of fighting about this. I don't think there is anything here that I can write that Starbucks doesn't already know, or hasn't previously heard me say.  I'm so tired.

I applaud this change, but we'll have to see if it will result in any actual change at the stores.  The problem is not and has never been customers not understanding "their brewed coffee choices".  The problem is that the stores have been told to push Pike Place Roast and THEY didn't understand the customer alternatives or didn't want to offer anything but PPR.  Our problem is simple:  We don't want to drink PPR, so offer us an alternative that we don't have to negotiate with each store.   If this clarified policy solves that, great, we're all happy again.  Will this also be implemented in the airport venues (that have recently started offering only PPR in the morning)?

I went to a medium-sized Starbucks today at about 1 PM.  The new signage was in place (but the small signs on the coffee urns still said "morning pick").  I asked for the Bold Pick of the Day.  The first response came back that they've stopped brewing it, but without my asking they asked if I'd like to wait while they brew some.  They did (very willingly without any eye rolls) and I enjoyed my bold.  Nice work folks.

I certainly hope the change comes soon as I'm not a big Pikes fan and I'm disaapointed when I stop in the afternoon and all I can get is Pike's

My fingers are crossed that the store I frequent will continue to brew a bold in the afternoon (no luck at 1pm today to get anything other than PPR).

The most important step is to remove PPR from all stores. All customers and staff complain loudly about it. There are simply no fans. Apparently SBUX did test marketing on McD's customers and concluded that serving swill would get those people into the stores. Well, other than the folks bringing in their teenagers for iced blended beverages, those potential customers are still at the same drive-thru getting fast food garbage. Can you just sell the PPR brand to McD's or BK and be done with this nonsense?

Well put Carl Black.  I too just cannot stand PRR.  I wish they would remove it totally.  OR, have it as an alternative but ONLY if somebody ASKS for it.  A nice medium-bodied and a nice BOLD blend every day, from morning till closing would be my vote.  By the way, Pike's Place is NOT included in any of the "nice" blends I refer to above.  Thank you for listening Starbucks and PLEASE let's get this done.

I got a bold coffee this afternoon from the store on Park Ave & 29th st. in NYC and the urn was marked Cafe Estima.

Sounds good to me! Now why use 9/29? Why not just continue? How can it hurt? And I too agree with Carl Black. Make PPB an option and offer the varietal bold first. If you get folks to taste it, they might buy the bagged coffee!

The airport locations remain a problem.  During a recent trip through multiple airports, all that the airport locations offered (even in the morning) was Pike Place Roast.  When asked if they could brew something else, they apologetically responded that PPR was all they had on hand.  The solution:  I walked a short distance over to Seattle's Best.  When I asked for coffee, they actually asked me if they wanted the mild or dark roast.  Imagine that, a coffee shop that offers more than one roast.

I'd like to know why the grocery store locations quit serving bold at 10 AM.  Also why their coffee tastes lousy -- do they not get the same brewing equipment as "real" stores?

I've read many comments on this site regarding the disgust your customers feel towards the Pike's Place brew. The feelings expressed are intense. I agree with them. Starbuck's may be saving a few bucks right now by selling this swill to the public but they're going to lose more than they've gained in damage control. Wake up Starbuck's, loyal customers are drifting away.

Not all your stores are offering to brew up a special cup of bold when only the Pike's Place is being offered. I didn't even know it was an option till I read about it on this site.

why is pike place being pushed so hard?  I like Verona and Sumatra and French Roast.  Pour over does not get it.

Pour overs always taste weak and without depth of flavor.

Reading the comments over the years I see that this is a common recommendation from hundreds of Starbuckies.
