How does Starbucks support local communities?

People often ask how Starbucks gives back to the local community.  From the neighborhoods where our stores are located, to those where our coffee is grown – we believe in being involved in the communities we’re a part of. Bringing people together, inspiring change and making a difference in people’s lives – it’s all part of being a good neighbor. And it’s a commitment rooted in the belief that we can use our scale to be a catalyst for change.

My name is Joelle and I work on the Global Responsibility team.  Today I want to share with you one fantastic area where Starbucks is involved in local communities.  Through grants, called the Starbucks™ Shared Planet™ Youth Grant, Starbucks provides funding to nonprofit organizations that support young people in creating change in their local community.  These grants help move us forward in reaching our Starbucks™ Shared Planet™ goal of supporting 50,000 young people in creating change in their local community.

While I could write stories about the grant recipients, I know it is much more interesting and personal to meet them yourself through video.  Below is the first of several short videos showcasing the stories of our grant recipients.   I hope you enjoy it and maybe, just maybe, it will inspire you to be a catalyst for change in your community.

I'm very proud of the great things that Starbucks does, and this blog entry is definitely about that responsibility to community. In the past, Starbucks' collaboration with Jumpstart or Starlight Children’s Foundation was also indicative of these persistent commitments.   Thanks for the blog.

It is a small disappointment to read such a community-zealous blog entry but curiously absent is any single mention of V2V.  Here, you have an opportunity to segue into the powerful force that V2V can be by partners  (and Starbucks friends too) making their local communities and beyond the best they can be.

Has Starbucks given up on V2V? I hope not!

Hi Melody! Nancy here.   We definitely have not given up on V2V, however we are looking at ways to enhance the experience and for now are not making any major announcements about this community until the next generation of the community is developed.  As it always has, V2V continues to be a grassroots community that grows and develops by word of mouth.  Because of that, it has grown to be a very genuine community with a strong foundation of people, which I am very proud of.  Thanks for being a part of it!  ... Hi Momji!...Hope you are doing well.

Melody do you work for Starbucks? I see you all over these boards.

City Year in general I think does good things - I am familiar with the program from Boston where they work in the inner city and poor suburban schools. So if SBUX wants to support the program its cool.

I would say that I think the goals of these efforts should be defined clearly "global responsibility", "shared planet" etc all sound nice and grand, especially to corporate types. But in the end I think people want to know that your company works in local communities near them. So when you are reaching out to US consumers talk about what you are doing here to help kids. Much more specific than what you do globally for the planet.

@Suite2100 - No, I do not work for Starbucks. That's likely a sign I should cut back in how much I post.
