Starbucks Card Mobile – the next innovation from the Starbucks Card team

We are very pleased to announce the Starbucks Card Mobile app for your iPhone.

You told us that convenience is important to you - what better way to manage your Starbucks Card than with your iPhone or iPod touch?

We took your suggestions and built an application that we think will meet your needs!

Need to know your balance?  Done!
Need to add all of your favorites Cards?  Done!
Need to sign-in and manage your Card account? Done!
Need to reload your Starbucks Card?  Done!

And now for the really cool part - you can even pay for your Starbucks purchases with your iPhone or iPod Touch in 16 test store locations in Seattle, WA and Silicon Valley, CA.  (For details of these stores and maps, please visit www.starbucks.com/mobile-apps/StarbucksCardMobile)

Mobile payment lets you enjoy your Starbucks Experience, on the go, with no wallet required!

I love to swim in Lake Washington and rarely take my wallet to workouts.  On my way home I stop by the Starbucks on 4000 East Madison (one of 8 payment trial participants in Seattle).  Here I can use Starbucks Card Mobile to check my balance and reload my account while I’m in line; and then pay for my doppio with my iPhone at the register – quick and easy!

We are very excited to test Mobile Payment with Starbucks Card Mobile and are looking forward to your feedback.  If you live or work near these stores, please give it a try!  If you are not within the test areas, please follow our journey on mystarbucksidea.com

You can download Starbucks Card Mobile today, in the iTunes App Store and you can check our a fun video about the app here.

I'd be more thrilled about the mobile card app if it worked properly.  There's a lot of us - more by the minute, as I do searches - who seem to be unable to use their registered accounts to log in.  When will this get fixed?

Hi Chuck.  Thanks for the update.  I hear the app is rated as a top app in the lifestyle category.  Exciting!  I love it.

Hey Chuck:

Assuming the test is a screaming success,  how long before sbx rolls national and will Card Mobile be available for use in all locations including your licensed concept stores (specifically the Safeway family) where I do most of my purchasing?

Many thanks.

fantastic.. only better would be to order (integration with your other app) with the card.. then go pick it up

I know deleting cards with zero balance shouldn't be the fix for logging in... all I know is once I deleted those cards from my account so I only had the Gold Card showing, it connected just fine. And that was after three days of trying everything else from uninstall/re-install to rebooting my phone. Shouldn't be the problem but just maybe? it is.

btw, I tested out the payment process and once we got the scanner and phone positioned correctly it worked with no issues. It was a great feeling.

Ok - here's what I have tried. Removed all the cards. Same login error. Added gold card only. Login error. Added mini card. Login error. Changed login id and passwords to four different combinations. Login error. It has to be something with the internals of the account that's preventing the connection from continuing. My account is a portover from the Starbucks Gold account - wonder if that could be it. I am also wondering whether I should make a new Starbucks account and try again.

Chuck,

I'm not sure if this is the correct place to write this comment, but here goes ---

I really love this idea and have downloaded both iPhone apps, however I don't quite see the logic in having 2 of them.  Both apps ideally should be rolled into one. When I'm traveling, why do I have to go into one app to find you guys and another to pay for my beverage?  What would be even more beneficial is to have the store locator indicate if it's a corp store or an affiliate.  This way I know before I walk in if I can use my gold card or if i need to dig out my Duetto card. I don't like to hold up the line while I'm fishing for a form of payment.  Technology should streamline and simplify our lives (and by default our caffein addictions) and I think you are on the right path, but it seems like Starbucks took an illogical exit somewhere.

Don't know why it posted my comment as "Anonymous" :(  Maybe I timed-out, who knows.

The above post at 5:28 is actually me.  Hopefully it will hold this time.

Not sure where to put this, but I've found if I create a new account, and move my card over to that account, I can finally log in with my new account.  Nothing I tried doing with my original account, like changing username/password/email address/adding cards/removing cards, worked.  Not sure what the disadvantages of using a new account, though.

These sound like nice apps but I can't use them since I don't have an iphone.  Will you be creating apps for other phones?

Also having problems logging into my account.  Keep getting same error message.  There seems to be no help from Starbucks.  Tried to create a new account with the app and that works fine.  Now I have two accounts.  I don't want to transfer the card from my old account and can't find a way to cancel the new account.  Why hasn't this problem been fixed yet?  How about answering some questions from some or your customers who seem "desperate" to use this app!  Come on guys it's called customer service.

Like others above I have deleted and reloaded the Mobile application about 8 times with the same result.  Tried logging in on a friend's IPhone  just to see what happened and got the same error message.  Found an old Starbuck's card and added it with absolutely NO problem and added funds to it.  Currently, I have my original card which is linked to auto-refill from checking account and I cannot log in with that card since it is linked to my Starbuck's account.  Oddly, I linked the old card that I loaded from Mobile application to my regular account and it works fine.  So strange.  Hope that this is fixed soon.

The iPhone app has all major credit cards for the refill card option. The only card missing is THE STARBUCKS GIFT CARD! Please look in to including this as whenever I get Starbuck Gift Cards, I just like to load them onto my Gold Card.

I have downloaded both apps and haven't had any problem logging in (yet). I think if there is a way to combine both functions into one app, that would be ideal. If not, I'll probably only keep the Mobile Card app as any variety of other GPS enabled apps can direct me to the closest SB. This, of course, is only if the pay-by-phone gets rolled out in wide release. I anxiously await that.

Hi everyone!  I want to update you on our progress addressing your concerns.  For folks who were getting sluggish response times or getting the “System Unavailable Error” preventing you from logging in – our tech team heard you and implemented a fix late last week to solve this issue – we are sorry for this inconvenience! You should be good to go!

If you are tying to log onto your Starbucks Card account and your user name or password is less than 6 characters, you will not be able to sign in.  We are looking to fix this in an upcoming release ASAP – in the mean time, you can change your username / password on your Starbucks account and this will let you access your account.  Just go to www.starbucks.com/card; Manage My Account ; Personal Info (please be sure to select a new username with at least 6 characters - and you will be able to login)!

We are working on one more issue – specific to folks with auto reload on their account – some of you are having a hard time logging in.  Our tech team is on it – they are working on a fix and I’ll be sure to let you know just as soon as we implement it!

As per the post above by Chuck Davidson, the problem is indeed fixed for me.  Today, while waiting in line at a Radio Shack, I decided to try activating my account and was stunned when it WORKED.  Thank you for listening and for trying to resolve this problem.  Not if this application could be combined with the other Starbuck's application.

I tried the Mobile Card app at the University Village II store in Seattle the other night. It worked beautifully! The two baristas there were excited for me as well, which made the experience even more memorable. :-)

I hope that more stores in the Seattle area will provide the Mobile Card payment option soon - especially the one located on 4th Ave. and Blanchard. That's where I go every day. :-)

I posted on the starbucksideas page as well. I really enjoy the starbucks mobile app. Agree with other poster who recommended combining the location app into the mobile app to find locations with type listed as well. I truly believe Atlanta GA would be a great city to continue to test the barcode mobile pay option. Please roll out here as soon as possible. I am an IT consultant and have been showing off the app to my clients, most of whom have iPhones. All of them were very excited at the possibility of paying with iPhone. Look forward to using this feature as soon as you can roll it out. Thanks.

I also posted this on the Starbucks Ideas page.  Please add an automatic balance refresh to the my Starbucks Card app when it starts up.  I made the mistake that it does this and then my card started coming up empty.  It seems to be an easy fix.

Sad!  Made sure that my Username and Password were 6 or more characters in length and it still will not logon.  I get, "An unexpected error occurred.  Please try again or come back later." error.  So, I am still waiting..waiting..can't wait!

Love the apps. Great concept for visitors of towns unfamiliar with locations and/or for interstate travel. This is the kind of innovation your customer base embraces.

Apps version 1.0 are almost always a problem. I too can't Login using the Starbucks Mobile Card after an iPhone OS upgrade from 3.0.1 to 3.1.  It did work...  once upon atime.  The good part is that Starbucks is working to solve this tricky problem.  Thanks Chuck......

The idea is awesome and the app looks great... only one HUGE problem.  Bring it to the Portland Metro Area Stores.  I have talked to at least 50 people so far that love the idea and are waiting to use it.  So bring it to PDX already!

Hi everyone!

I have an update for those folks who have auto-reload enabled Starbucks Card accounts and not able to log in – our Tech Team identified the issue and have implemented a fix– we are sorry for this inconvenience!

Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts and experiences – we love hearing from you!

I live in the bay area where some stores are being used for testing the iPhone app.  Unfortunately the closest store is 15 to 20 miles away from me.  I can't wait to be able to use my phone to purchase my drinks!  The stores I do go to haven't even heard of the app yet. I've found the same response in Southern California as well.  Please hurry and make this a reality in all Starbuck stores soon!!

Two issues I want to see addressed:

1. When you set up auto-reload on through the app the minimum reload value is $25 and the lowest value that triggers a reload is $20. On the website you can set it for $15 and $10. Why the inconsistency? I like setting my card to 15/10.

2. Can you please bring the mobile payment feature to the Boston area? As one of the tech centers of the country this would be a natural choice to test it out.

I am really enjoying my new app.  I have never had a single problem with it, ever.  I use both apps regularly.  I am eager for payment via the app at my many local stores in Denver/Colorado Springs CO to be available.  Currently I use the card balance and reload features the most.  I also have a variety of friends' drinks stored as well as often I am the one that makes the SBUX run for the office in the afternoons.  Very cool feature btw.  Thanks for a great job so far.  Keep up the good work.

I absolutely loved using the mobile feature on my iPhone when I recently visited Seattle on business. It was very easy to use and I actually reloaded my card "on-the-fly" right in front of the cashier because my card was short! I used the mobile feature for the 4 days I was in Seattle and couldn't dream of a more useful application for the iPhone. Now... I can only hope that the wonderful decision-makers of Starbucks brings this convenient feature to a store in Walnut Creek, California!!! This would be my little slice of heaven!! Thanks All!! On a side note: Thanks for all the wonderful donations to my fellow Marines stationed overseas!! Semper Fi!!

i really love that there is now an app for starbucks but please make one for the blackberry. I know that most of your clientele is young but the working world loves your coffee too and more often than not they will have a blackberry and wouldn't mind having an app that can pay for the coffee as well as order it and have it ready when they get there. other than that your on the right track

Please post a fix for login Error "An unexpected error occurred. Please try again or come back later."

I have iPhone 3G - my username and password work on the starbucks.com site - one card registered.  I've downloaded and deleted the app twice in an attempt to log in through the Mobile Card app.

PLEASE! bring this app to android!!! not all of us have AT&T, but we shouldn't be punished for that! I am a huge starbucks fan, and if I could have this app on my Android phone then I would be so incredibly happy. Please Starbucks make this happen, android is the hottest, and one of the fastest growing mobile platforms out there, if you make it, i promise there will be many many downloads by faithful starbucks fans.

Any word on a fix for the "Unexpected error"? This problem has been going on for over a year according to the posts in this thread. I got the app, it worked, then it stopped working. Now I cannot log in. Yes my username is longer than 6 characters. I even tried creating an entirely new account under a different email and got the same error.

The only way I seem to be able to do anything about it is to post here which doesn't seem to do anything. This is really frustrating and no response from Starbucks is just aggravating. The most recent update (11/17/10) did nothing for my problem.

I'm not sure where I'm supposed to log an error I keep getting when trying to reload my gold card via my iPhone app... I've tried for the last 2 days and continue to get the "Unexpected error has occurred, please try again later"

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks
