Introducing the Armed Forces Partner Network

Hi, my name is Kimberley Thompson.  I am a member of Starbucks Coffee Company’s Global Diversity team.

I’ve noticed some ideas on My Starbucks Idea around supporting the men and women in the military.  Since this seems to be on your mind, I thought I’d tell you about some of the ways Starbucks partners (employees) support the military.

For many years, Starbucks partners have actively engaged and supported men and women in the military and their families in a variety of ways.  Some examples include, donating coffee, products & creating care-packages for the troops and their families.  In addition to this support, Starbucks has added an Armed Forces Partner Network.  This network is for all partners interested in supporting Starbucks veterans and their families. The Armed Forces Partner Network’s mission is to contribute positively to Starbucks and our communities by supporting Starbucks veterans, current service members, and their families.

The Starbucks Partner Networks Program is composed of groups who have an interest in and support for a dimension of diversity.  They help drive the company’s global diversity strategy.   At Starbucks, Diversity = Inclusion + Equity + Accessibility.  In addition to the Armed Forces Partner Network, the company supports six other networks: Access Accessibility Network, Black Partner Network, Emerging Workforce Network, Hora del Café Network, Pride Alliance Network and Women’s Development Network.

Kimberley,

This is great news about the efforts in the military.

If at all possible I would be interested in learning more about Starbucks efforts in working with potential diversity suppliers, as I work for a licensed Woman Owned Business Enterprise (WBE) manufacturer of temporary P.O.P. displays for the retail market.

Thank you,

Seth Ebarra

It is good to hear you are beginning to do more for the armed forces.  I am also concerned though about Starbucks retail stores located on army bases.  I  live on a base on the Iraq border where there is a Starbucks located.  I understand the difficulties of supplying the store in this area, but nearly every drink on the menu is $1.50 more than in the states.  A tall vanilla latte, $2.95 in the bay area, california, is $4.40 here on base and a venti house coffee, $1.85 in the states, is $3.40 here.  It does not seem fair to charge service members, who are over here fighting and sacrificing, such an inflated price.

On the same note, with the new Christmas marketing campaign already out, I feel Starbucks could have shown some sensitivity for these deployed troops.  Although I realize it is a company wide campaign, having signs saying "wish for joyous reunions" seem to further remind troops what they are missing for the holidays.

Thank you for your consideration on these ideas.

As a US Marine and Starbucks partner I take pride in what I do is the best. I was wondering if there is anything in particular that I can do to help serve the Corps and support Starbucks in their mission.

Hi Seth ~  for information on Starbucks Supplier Diversity, please visit www.starbucks.com/.../sup_div.asp

We are dedicated to providing a world-class supplier program that supports diversity. We seek companies who share the ideals outlined in our Mission Statement, and whose culture and values are consistent with Starbucks. We use a competitive process, choosing a supplier that meets our key requirements, including: Value, Quality, Service, Business Stability and Business Practices.

Each year, we have consistently raised the bar on our Diverse Supplier spending. Starbucks actively engages in community outreach efforts, most notably through the regional affiliate of the National Minority Supplier Development Council. We have collaborated with several other organizations to establish a model Supplier Diversity Training Program for our buyers that we also offer to the community.

If your company qualifies and you're interested in working with Starbucks as a Diverse Supplier, please create or edit a company profile.

Kimberly-

Keep up the good work! We are also looking to connect with Starbuck's to help out our disabled American veterans. We delivered a hand-made custom VIA promotional display made out of discarded tires to our local Starbuck's here in Glencoe, Illinois.  Robert, the Manager, graciously accepted our gift to help us in turn promote the mission of our non-profit, The Earth Tire Foundation. We are hoping that someone in Starbuck's Corporate will visit our website and understand how we can team up for a very unique environmental cause that will put disabled American veterans back to work as well! Please visit us at www.earthtire.org. Thanks!

As a partner that has just joined the armed services and will be leaving the company soon I feel like this is something that maybe you sould work on coaching your managers on I work in Tennessee and was on track to being premoted to shift I was told "your on the list it will happen soon" it was talked about everytime I was at work.. "its really moving along it will come soon" ... then when my manager found out guess what... No more mention of promotion... From what I read on our labor laws poster it is not legal to not promote someone due to their military status ...
