Idea Launched: Improve MSI Inbox

Hi there,

Welcome to My Starbucks Idea!  You may have noticed we have a new look.  Please tell us how you like the refreshed website.  With the site refresh, we also launched one of your ideas – improve the inbox.  The inbox has three components: comments, my ideas, and my comments.  Within each of these tabs you can now filter by date settings ranging from today to last month as well as “all” and “unread”.  You can also filter by ideas category.

The work hasn’t stopped. We’re continuing to make improvements on the site functionality, so don’t be shy, tell us your wish list for the website and as always we’d love to hear all your ideas for Starbucks too.  We’re still here with the same purpose to listen to you and generate ideas to shape and improve your Starbucks Experience.  Keep the ideas coming!

Don’t make me search my inbox

So far I don't like it very much Cecile.  How can I see what has been posted or commented on so I can add my comment?  All that was needed was to take the old one and just move "recent comments' to the top.  That's all.  Now I can't even put my posts in blod face like I like to do for added emphasis.   It is really the pitd the way you hav it now Cecile.

What happened to my comment?

Steve 2

How come I am Steve 3 instead of Steve2?  What is going on??

Melody

I like being able to look at all recent comments and now it's confusing to me where those have gone. One thing that is nicer, is that it is easier to use the inbox.

Not an improvement.

<br> <br>

Agree with Steve3's comments, <b>plus</b> hate the new font (too light in color and weight) and font at bottom of page is unreadable (SBUX left their CAPS lock on too), loss of HTML coding... (any more and I will have to charge SBUX my usual computer consulting fee).

What happened to "sign out" on the new improved (not) page?

Also the new pages are slower to load.

The option to show only threads with unread comments in the inbox is nice.  But that's as far as it goes, I'm afraid.

Honestly, I don't like the new design much, either.  On a purely aesthetic level, it's sort of pretty, but the functionality is definitely impaired.  And function trumps looks any day.

I don't like the way the comments display, for one.  I prefer it the way it was before, with the username off to the left.  Also, the new thumbs up/down make it harder to see at a glance if I've voted on something or not.  They need to be higher contrast.

To be honest, I don't know why you guys changed things at all.  If it's not broken, don't fix it.  =P

Melody
10/23/2009 4:01 PM

I can't tell if I have voted on something at all anymore. Also, I'm not convinced that it is an improvement that I now have to click to open up the comments associated with an idea. I just like as few clicks as possible - Fewer things to load, fewer things to click, and often I'm browsing from my phone where the easier the better.

Well, I think I know why you changed the site...I believe I remember lots of requests for improvements!  but, I could be wrong.  Anyway, I haven't spent enough time with it yet but my general, kind-of-quick impression is:  I do like the look but I agree, it's hard to follow....the vote aspect, the "posted by me" ????  It must ? be more organized but it seems more fragmented.  this is my prelim......

Steve 2
10/23/2009 4:04 PM

I agree with Kathryn.  And what is with all they strange numbers?  LadyKathryn is now LadyKathryn1, Melody has transformed all the way to Melody13, I have become Steve 3, DocCooks has become DocCooks2, and I'm sure others will be different too.  What's going on?

Melody
10/23/2009 5:20 PM

Conversation seems to have just about died. There is no way to easily glance and see what people have recently commented on.

LadyKathryn
10/23/2009 5:23 PM

@Melody - The recent comments page is still there, but it's oddly labeled.  It's under 'View Ideas', then 'Most Commented'.

pechipy1
10/23/2009 7:01 PM

I agree with all of the above comments. As for things I'd still like to see, I'd like to see a more efffective search function. (we should be able to search titles, body of ideas, and comments separately. I'd also like for users to be able to have visible profiles. I'm really not liking the new formatting as of now. (This is pechipy, not sure where these weird names come from in this section.)

Melody
10/23/2009 7:25 PM

@LadyKathryn - Silly me - I thought that the "most commented" would actually be those threads with the MOST comments, as opposed to those with the most recent comments, regardless of the total number that the thread has!

LadyKathryn
10/23/2009 7:29 PM

@Melody - That's what I thought at first, too!  But finally, I gave up and clicked on it, and sure enough, it was the recent comments page.  It's poor wording, to be sure.

I agree with everyone. I hate the new improvements and actually find it difficult to see the most recent comments and although it is visually an improvement, it otherwise makes no sense and does not seem to be anymore user friendly.

(sign in, sign out, sign in..that's a problem)  anyway, it is true. not alot of conversation going on at msi.  personally, I have kind of tired of trying to figure it out.  It really shouldn't be this hard.  really.  and when I finally do get to a place I think I want to be, I can barely read it!  comments way too close together, and who wrote it?(comment)  can't see things easily enough without too much search.  I LOVE the home page LOOK.  and then ......  my mood changes from  there.  what happened.  ??  it's just too chaotic.  too many options before you see what you're looking for.

Can't get into the inbox!

Steve 2
10/24/2009 11:18 AM

IT ALL STINKS AND IS WORSE THAN BEFORE!!

Steve 2
10/24/2009 11:20 AM

Also why does it say our comments take a few minutes to publish and why does everyone have a different screen name?

Melody
10/24/2009 1:48 PM

The inbox is better! I can find comments now (those new comments responding to threads that I've previously posted in).  <br><br>

Steve,  the funny usernames appear to be a hold-over from some update where there briefly was a login problem. Remember that?? <br><br>

But I agree, it is now harder to see if you've voted on a thread, and I really dislike having an extra click to see the conversation going on in a thread.

pechipy1
10/24/2009 3:00 PM

Now that I've figured it out, the inbox IS better... But other than that, everything is worse. Why couldn't we have a better inbox without ruining the whole rest of the site?

Betterbefore
10/24/2009 3:54 PM

well, the longer I'm on there (msi), the worse I am feeling about it.  I certainly have no urge to post an idea or respond to anything....I'm too busy wondering what is going on, and then, IF I do figure out what is going on....I'm thinking:  too much trouble.  and way too hard to read.  I feel bad giving you guys all this negative feedback but, it really is alot of chaos, I THINK. (would rather that were italics...)  the home page is very attractive but, downhill from there.   btw, since I can't ask on msi, did someone (stv2 or 3?) say something about the reality of a crazy 'punch card' in the future?  can't be true. right???  oh well, I can go over to another user-friendly-coffee-knowledegable site and write til the cows come home......   thank goodness!!

Melody
10/24/2009 4:24 PM

@betterbefore - I am sure the punch card thing is a misunderstanding. I believe Steve was looking at an old thread from about over a year ago - At that time some mods would lock punch card threads and mark them "coming soon" *meaning* that a LOYALTY program was coming which would equivalent to buy 10 get 1 free - of course, meaning the Gold Card!

As for your other comments! It is harder to read, and it seems like the amount of conversation has already died down. I think that the "most commented" area really should be renamed, "thread conversation" because that is what it is.

purple1
10/25/2009 7:00 AM

Melody I guess I am missing something, but I find it most difficult to follow and search for the new comments and see any improvements in the inbox. Again, other than it being visually more attractive, I do not find any advantages to the new website.

Melody was right I saw an old thread on punch cards and it was marked "COMING SOON" and I just assumed it meant that punch cards were coming soon.  I'm really sorry I got my friends worried. This brings me to another problem.  I can't add a comment as with the old system.

Thanks everyone for sharing this feedback.

Why oh why did you take the HTML away?  You know I like to bold face my comments for emphasis.  Also when I go to view a comment I find I can't add a comment like before.  Why??

Steve 2
10/27/2009 6:01 AM

Also why does it take a few minutes for my comments here to appear?   And why am I Steve 3?

Hi Everyone, thanks for your posts.  I know most of you very well, but for those of you who don't know, my name is Nancy and my team is responsible for the new design and functionality enhancements.  Please know that your feedback is well-received!

I did, however, want to take a moment to let you know that this is only "Phase 1" of the development stage.  There are two phases.  In "Phase 2" we will be implementing many of the things you have already identified as opportunities:

-font size, color, clarity will be improved so it is easier to read.

-a rich text editor will be added so you don't have to use HTML coding.

-the new editor will also allow you to upload pictures!

-a caching functionality will be implemented to speed up the site.

-search will be improved

In reading through your comments, I will be taking back to the team the following ideas:

-issue with extra click through to see comments is annoying

-screenname issue to be fixed

-ability to comment on Coming Soon ideas

Finally, there seems to be a trend around the fact that the site is 'hard to follow'.  Can you please chime in with more specifics of what you mean by this?  Our goal was to make the site more visually appealing and easier to navigate. If we have not accomplished this, I'd like to hear more so we can improve this for you.

Thanks for all your feedback! We are definitely listening.  Oh, and btw, if there is anything you "like" about the site, I'd love to hear that too! ;)

Hi Nancy! I still can't get into my inbox.

What I like on MSI is..............the posters. I have *met* some really nice people. Also, that blog post about V2V!! I <3 V2V.

10/27/2009 9:06 AM

@steve 3 - regarding the screen name on the blog: we had a bug with sign-in a few weeks back.  We're working on a fix.  All your user names have been shared with our IT team.  We hope to have this fixed and consistent across the site very soon.

Steve 2
10/27/2009 2:47 PM

I really couldn't care less what  you call me whether it's Steve2 or Steve3 since everyone out there in MSI land knows me and I am the same loveable and somewhat contankerous and sometimes pixilated Steve but consistenancy would be nice.  The only problems I have had so far with the new MSI is that when someone comments on one of my posts I can't comment back like I used to on the old version.  I can't see anyone else's posts that I'd like to comment on.  I am still experiencing difficulty with signing in at first only to have to sign in again which drives me crazy.  Luckily it only happen occasionally but enough to be a pain in a certain part of my anatomy.  And as you know I like to bold face my comments to make them stand out and to emphasize them and put things in italics but I can't do that now which makes me sad.

Steve 2
10/27/2009 2:53 PM

Also that was THE SECOND TIME I started this comment.  The first time I got almost done and then-poof-it disappeared into cyberspace's black hole of no return and it said to sign in so I said a few choise words which you can imagine and started all over again which was really frustrating.

Although I have finally gotten my inbox down to zero after searching and searching forever for the comments that seemed to be stuck in the air, I also have to say that it is difficult to see who wrote what comments and follow the thread. I think the site is visually more attractive, but I would like to find it easier to keep up to date on the most recent comments.

LadyKathryn
10/28/2009 4:18 PM

Nancy - As to the site being hard to follow, I know that I, for one, have some difficulty following the comments the way they are now.  They're squished together, and with the usernames in such tiny print, it's easy to lose track of who posted what.  I'd like that fixed.  (Honestly, I'd like it to go back to the way it was, with the user names to the left.  That was very easy to read.)

Also, I'm concerned about this rich text editor you mentioned...the site already takes a lot longer to load than it did before.  I can only imagine that it will be slower still with this new addition.  Is this something that you guys are aware of and thinking about?  And if not, then I have to ask...why do we need a rich text editor, anyway?  Basic HTML for formatting is ridiculously easy, and that's really all we need.  So I'm not sure what the point of a rich text editor is.

And one last thing...why is it that I have to sign in at least twice to post a comment here on the blog?  I'll be logged in on MSI, then come here, and I have to log in again.  It would be nice if that could be fixed.  =)

Thanks everyone for the continued dialogue here.  I especially like the conversation around the rich text editor.  The current option for us is all or nothing.  We add the ability to bold or italicize text and we get the option to add files.  Is this worth it?  Think about page loads, viewing on mobile devices...

are we back to Cecile? or Nancy? I'm going with Cecile.  See, just now, I was signed in on msi, came over here, could already see I was signed out, went to sign in over here in order to comment, and when I did, that took me back to msi, tried to come back here, was immediately signed out, etc.  That went on for about 5X and then, out of the blue, one time it left me signed in HERE.  but, that's not really a big msi issue, but a small technical one.  besides anything I've already said:  the 'hide comments' , why???  another click, another click, plus why does the username of the person not appear on the thread, or comment, or wherever I am ??? at first, when it always says: 'posted by me'  ??? that's not helpful.  I need to see what's going on and who said it.  Personally I don't care about "bold" options (sorry Stv2 or 3 :) , anything that would further slow the site down I am against.  I would just like for it to be less chaotic, user freindly, the comments are insane with the usernames all bunched together.  I find nothing about it better :(  except home page appearance, which is very nice.   and the inbox slightly improved.

Thanks for the feedback betterbefore.  I agree with you about the comment margins and the user name.  We have added this to our phase 2 enhancement list.  I believe the comments may have been hidden to help with the page load time, but I hear you on the extra click.  It sounds like the community would rather have the comments show without the extra click.  I'm looking into this as a phase 2 enhancement.  We are also working on the sign-in issue.
