12 Days of Wishing

Hi, it’s Sarah, from the Merchandise team, with some exciting news.  Starbucks is a place where wishes come true on a daily basis.  Whether they are wishes for indulgence or sustenance, wishes for re-connecting with friends or for “Me Time” or wishes for more reusable cold cups, we do our best to grant wishes big and small.

Speaking of wishes, I encourage you to drop by your participating local Starbucks store from December 1st through 12th, for incredible prices on some of our favorite merchandise items.  Each day, a new item (or items) will be featured on a special “12 Days of Wishing” podium table.  The deal of the day will be available for that day only, so be sure to visit as often as you can during the next twelve days.  I can’t tell you exactly what we’ll be offering, but I can assure you, all items will make great gifts; each better than a partridge in a pear tree!

PS - Today's Wish is a Red Cup Mug for the amazing price of $3.99 (+ tax where applicable). Get it while you can!

You sent me an email last night telling me that I could see the deal of the day on FB if I was a fan.  I've been a fan for months, but when I visit your FB page I cannot find where you are listing the deal.  There are a lot of other people searching too.  Will someone please help us out by either posting it or telling us where it is located?

I visited Starbucks this morning and inquired about the deal of the day...I was told that the promotion for 12 days of  wishing doesn't start until tomorrow (Dec. 4th)...are all of the stores on different schedules or were they misinformed?  (Poway, CA)

Today's featured item is - load $25 on your Starbucks Card in store and receive a 3-pack VIA for free.

I'll definitely be hitting up a store today to do that reload!  It'll replace the VIA I'm drinking right now haha.

I don't understand, the promotion was stated to have started on Dec. 1st but there was no mention of it even on that day.

Dec. 2nd it was posted here with the featured item...but by then it was too late for me to get it.

Dec. 3rd we received the email about it and that we could find out the featured item on Facebook.  I checked FB before I left for work (about 7am MST) and no post.  No post until noon...and nothing posted on what the items were the previous 2 days.

So my questions are:

What was the item I missed out on Dec. 1st?  I can't find it anywhere.

Can you please post the item on FB or MSI earlier so that people can see it in the morning.  If it was 7am MST than it was 9am EST so that is sort of late for those people who the item might prompt them to stop in a Starbucks on their way to work.

WHAT'S WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE?  These two quotes speak volumes!

If BOTH Starbucks staff, and regular customers are UNAWARE of what's going on- how is a casual, or NEW customer supposed to have any clue?

Yes- I got my e-mail.  Did I glance at it yes.  Was I aware in some vague way that there was a "12 Day's of Wishing" promotion- yes.....vaguely.

It was late yesterday- I had banking to do.  I popped into the STARBUCKS next door to get a Gift Card.  If the Barista hadn't mention it was "FREE VIA DAY"- I would have had NO CLUE!  When the Barista said FREE VIA- my first thought was- what I am going to do with a cup of VIA?  Now, if it was a single pack of VIA- i could add it to my little bamboo cubby box I purchased a couple of weeks ago. (GREAT PRODUCT!!!)  Now, when the Barista said FOUR FREE packs of THREE.....that's a different matter.

HOWEVER- a promotion isn't a promotion if no one knows about it.  This 'promotion' appears to be well conceived, but poorly executed.  The best of intentions fail when everything doesn't pull together.  Sadly, this appears to be the situation.

Regarding today's promotion-  "for $20US/$25Canadian get 1lb of Christmas Blend and a $10 Starbucks Card." HOW does STARBUCKS justify the 25% differential for CANADIAN purchases?

According to the Bank of Canada- since August 2oo9- the US dollar has been NO MORE than 8.8¢ higher (based on the monthly average).  Advance ordering, and future delivery, appear to not have an impact on the 'price' of a Gift Card' component.  So how can STARBUCKS justify this  HUGE price difference ?????

I read this today on another blog  (fatwallet.com) "Starbucks is supposed to be updating their Facebook fan page everyday with this but it's spotty at best."

And, "Details are harder and harder to come by...asked a barista this morning about today's product, but he didn't know the specifics (just that the recycled tumblers were on sale). I had no interest in them until I came back and read they were 40% off (and I guess they come with a free beverage certificate inside as well)."

Now- whether fact, or fiction, perception is everything.

From these customers perspective, be it on the internet, or when physically in a STARBUCKS- this promotion is falling apart.

Like I said earlier, some of the Starbucks stores don't even have the correct date...two days into the promotion, the Poway, CA store told me it didn't even start for another 2 days (on the 4th)....pretty sad when I'm more informed than an actual Starbucks store.

I agree with everyone stating this promotion was poorly communicated and executed. I am a gold club member, facebook fan, twitter follower, MSI member and I only sometimes knew what the discounted item of the day was.  The stores needed to be better informed. The customers needed clearer consistent notification (3 am daily to twitter, facebook and MSI perhaps in time for our morning coffee?).  Perhaps you could have even offered to email us if we asked each day with the item.

I think this was a great idea, however, it was executed very poorly.  There was almost zero advertising and the table with each days items was below eye level.  I knew that it was going to happen in November, however, I didn't actually notice it in store until December 4th and even then someone else pointed it out to me.  It's unfortunate that it was lost in the flury of VIA and other holiday merchandise.
