Eco-conscious Starbucks Card – in more ways than one!

Hello!
We've seen quite a few suggestions to increase our use of recycled content in the production of Starbucks Cards.  The spirit of this idea marries well with our Starbucks™ Shared Planet™ goal to find innovative ways to decrease our environmental footprint.

We focused on understanding the journey our Cards make - from raw material sourcing to end of usable life - so that we can make sound decisions and reduce our environmental footprint.

For every product we offer, we want to provide something you’ll love, while also staying consistent with our values as a company.  This is certainly true for the Starbucks Card, which is why we were so excited to work with Conservation International to develop a new Card made with 80 percent post-industrial recycled materials.

Perhaps the best part of the Conservation International Starbucks Card is that it allows you to get involved in the critically important effort of preserving tropical forests, one of our planets most threatened resources.  Each time you pay with your Conservation International Starbucks Card (from March 9 through December 31, 2010) Starbucks will donate 5¢ to Conservation International to help save forests.  Forest preservation is a powerful tool in fighting climate change.

The Conservation International Starbucks Card will be available in participating U.S. stores starting March 9.  I hope you will love this new Starbucks Card as much as we do.  Enjoy!

Would LOVE to see this in the Japan stores!

LOVE the idea. It breaks my heart every time someone gives me a gift card that I have to transfer it to my gold card and they just toss the gift card in the trash.

Thank you for making it a little less painful

That's great! What i would really like to see is the starbucks stores having a card recycling program where people could put their used cards and they would be recycled and used in the stores.

I would be thrilled to receive a "twice loved" starbucks card. If there are cards with some change you could donate that to a charity charity.

Sorry if this is a lil off topic!

This is a great idea!! I wish I had thought of it. Conservation International is the perfect organization to pair up with for a card donation with each transaction. Of course, I know Starbucks has collaborated with C.I. since about 1998, doing many great things, but it's exciting to know that the partnership hasn't fizzled out, and Starbucks is still dedicated to preserve fragile environmental biospheres.

Excellent!

What a great gift idea for my environmental friend.  Will I be able to buy online as well?

Love the idea so much I picked up the card a few days ago after using the red card since it came out last year. How about a card that you could choose which charity gets the nickel per transaction, like Windows Live Messenger's i'm initiative? It would be a nice way to reduce the number of cards being used, which is part of the intent of the CI card.

What about Canada?

Love the idea - please bring it to Canada!

The CI Card will only be available in the U.S. stores.  I'll let the Card team know the interest for this in Canada too for future programs.

Looking forward to the new cards & the ability to donate towards CI!  However, on the next round, please reconsider using non-PVC plastics -- recycled from post consumer or not, the PVC life-cycle has known health risks to humans.  I'm looking into a card made from PETEg and the possibility that they can use post consumer PETE feedstock.  Then the spent cards can be placed into the regular recycling bins which I hope you will also place at all your stores!

This is a good one though and, just like Melody says, Excellent!

I hope this card reminds people to use their own reusable mug/tumbler or ask for their drinks in a ceramic "for here" cup! It would seem ironic to me to carry a Conservation International card, then get a beverage in a paper cup.

This card should be available for purchase online!!! Specially for companies wanting to promote their green initiatives. I guess Starbucks doesnt want to donate too much towards this!

You can recycle gift cards here

www.earthworkssystem.com/Consumers

and Starbucks could easily set up to make their gift cards from 100% post consumer plastic or easily recyclable plastic, #1 or #2, like the kind used for soda bottles.

But glad to hear that Sbucks will move toward recycled content in cards too.  :-)

Dear Starbucks Reward Card Staff:

Your mom and dad would probably love hanging out more

at their local Starbucks...they sure have the time...but pay-

for their cups of coffee might be an issue.

How about rewarding them with a Senior Discount Card?
