MSI Coffee Tasting Club Week #4 – Komodo Dragon Blend®

Crack open a bag of Komodo Dragon Blend® and one thing will stand out immediately – a strong aroma that smells a little like a garden or baseball field after a fresh rain.

This earthy characteristic is always my first clue that I’m about to enjoy an Asia/Pacific coffee. It’s a dominating scent that distinguishes the region’s coffees quite well. While the press steeps and as I pour my glass, I let my nose take it in. There’s no denying that this is a big, bold blend. My mouth begins to water in anticipation.

Smell is only the first of four steps in the coffee tasting experience, so I dive right into the next – slurp. Proud of a noisy effort that would make my mother cringe, I let the coffee hit my entire palate and enjoy the flavors. Very herbal or loamy – think mushrooms – with hints of spice. The resemblance to this coffee's more famous Asia/Pacific cousin, Sumatra, is there.

The third step is locate – to detect where on your tongue the flavors really pop. This is where you find what makes Komodo Dragon Blend® so special… In addition to the semi-washed beans that are characteristic of the region, it’s also blended with washed beans that have gone through an additional fermentation step. This gives it a crisp acidity, detectable on the sides and tip of the tongue, giving an extra layer to the coffee.

Lastly, in step four we describe what we’re tasting.  I’m loving the assertive body, and the way it balances out with the crisp acidity. Suddenly I find myself craving something with cinnamon. Now it’s your turn. Head down to your favorite Starbucks store this week, order up a cup of Komodo Dragon Blend®, and come back to MSI to let us know what smells, tastes and experiences it evokes for you.

Whether your palate is highly refined or you’ve never tried this before, that’s ok – there are no wrong answers. Coffee tasting is a journey, and I’m glad we’re all taking this one together!

I had a grande of Komodo Dragon yesterday...pour over.  I've had this before so was not a new experience.  Of all the four coffees to date, this is my least favorite.  (which I already knew)  The aroma was pleasant in its earthiness but that's as far as it goes for me.  Definitely a bit spicey, which I don't like and very full bodied.  Not a clean finish.  I have always enjoyed Sumatra.....not as my number one love, but this Komoda has too much bite for me.

Komodo Dragon is by far one of my favorite coffees. I love the earthy herb flavors. I never thought of pairing it with something cinnamon flavored but the next time I get it, I'll have to give it a try.

I got my Komodo Dragon sticker yesterday! Love it. This is an amazing coffee as a drip coffee.  It is earthy and hearty and just what coffee should be. :)

I had a cup this morning.  I absolutely loved it.  Earthy and herbly (is that a word :) ) goodness.  This is one of my favs.  I didn't think it was "bold", a little mild for me.  But, it was definitely a good flavor and did not have a bitter finish.  Good choice!

Having a cup right now, paired with cinnamon raisin toast.  I could taste the spice even just with the first few sips.  As it's starting to cool I notice the flavor change isn't bad.  I feel it goes from the spice being prominent when the coffee is hot, to more acidity standing out as it cools a bit.

Good blend, enjoying it more than last week's coffee...feels like we're back to bold again!

Very good. Well balanced and a full body taste. I think it might replace the Yukon as my top pick so far.

1-10 Rating: 9.

I've always like the Komodo.  To me, it has an exotic flavor.  Maybe some citrus in the end.  For whatever reason, if ever a brew led me to want a cup of tea, this is it.  And I'm not saying that's bad.  It just makes me think of Asia, maybe some Cherry Blossoms, and some soft stringy tea house music in the background.

This one is my personal favorite, I snagged a pound to go along with my cup, you know for later.  (That my venti tastes quite different from the tall poured from the heater five minutes later is a different discussion entirely.)

I enjoy the strength of the flavor and the general lack of bitterness well supports oversized spoonfulls of ground beans in my press.

The first thing I noticed was its aroma, it's very strong and earthy.  The taste matches the boldness of the aroma, it's really full-bodied and flavorful.  It's a good blend for people who are looking for that tangible taste.

I really liked the Komodo blend.  I drank almost all of it black and I really noticed the earthy aroma and spicy/toasty taste.  As it cooled I did notice the acidity start to assert itself, which was less to my liking but by adding milk the taste was smoother, richer and more enjoyable with no sour aftertaste.  I drank it without food but I was near an Auntie Annie's pretzel kiosk and my mouth was watering for a cinnamon sugar pretzel. I find it interesting that you suggest pairing it with something cinnamony.   Tomorrow I'll get another cup and pair it with a cinnamon crumb cake to see the flavor enhancements.  My favorite bold blend so far.

Ah, Komodo Dragon! This is probably one of my top 3 favorite Starbucks coffees. This is definitely one bold blend. The smell is intense and earthy, and the taste does not disappoint. There are pronounced notes of spices and herbs against a deep backdrop of earthiness. I can almost picture a monsoon sweeping through a tropical forest. One thing I have noticed about Komodo is that the acidity, that crisp "zing" along the sides of the tongue, can vary greatly from cup to cup depending on the brew method, temperature, how long it's been sitting, etc. My most recent cup had a very high acidity (reminiscent of Kenya, if you can believe it), a surprising but pleasant feature. Even when the acidity is not so high, Komodo always seems to have a crisp mouthfeel and a very clean finish. The refined finish, in my opinion, would make Komodo a good starter coffee for newcomers to black drip coffee. Additionally, the bold and complex flavors make me think I could drink it nearly every day!

Can't say I like this one very much. Still better than Pike, but like Pike, it is highly acidic.

After last week's coffee I was really happy with Komodo Dragon Blend. Initially I was not sure, the smell was strong, bitter, and earthy. I added half and half and sugar. It was smooth, had a bit of a tang. Overall I really liked it though.

It went well with my Vanilla Bean Scone.

Komodo Dragon is (has been for years) my favorite of the "always available" beans.

Komodo, as with most extra dark roasts, shows which baristas know how to brew.

Monday's brew was not up to par, just passable as it was made by one of the less detail oriented baristas. Today's (Tuesday's) was done just right--in fact I could smell the rich aroma as I walked in and could immediately tell who was on duty.

I am really enjoying having 8-weeks of Starbucks best dark roasts, sure hope to see these beans in the brew cycle more often.

Komodo used to be one of my favorites, but not as much anymore. I'm not sure why my opinion has changed, but in comparison to the other coffees, the spiciness was way too overpowering. I've got to agree with betterbefore. This is still a great coffee, and definitely better than PPR or next week's Estima, but not my absolute favorite. So far I'd rank the coffees as follows:

1) Italian Roast

2) (RED)

3) Yukon

4) Komodo Dragon

Komodo Dragon is definitely spicy and bold.   I also noticed an earthy aroma at first and I liked this one quite a bit.

Komodo Dragon has a lot of the flavors in Sumatra that I like, but not the extreme earthy-ness.

Aroma- toasted spice

Acidity- very mild

Body- full

Flavor- earthy, mild spice

This one's got a definite earthy smell and taste to it that pops at the front of my mouth then eases into a smooth taste. It's definitely one that grows on you.

I did notice that when I added milk and sugar if I took a quick sip it was all smooth, but if I stopped and lingered on the sip it started smooth then popped at the back of my mouth.  I did get a faint hint of citrus in that back of my mouth sip.

Defnintely one of the more interesting coffees so far.

I enjoyed this one.  It was earthy and had no bad aftertaste.  I'm enjoying the bold choices, even though I usually stick with medium roasts.  Maybe I am a bold gal after all, despite being too afraid to try the darker roasts previously.  I've only tried four and already I'm having a tough time deciding which one to get at the end of the promotion.

First time tasting Komodo Dragon and unlike its namesake, it was very appealing.  {If you watched the  "Life" show on reptiles and amphibians then you saw the komodo dragons in action but I digress.}  Back to the coffee, wonderful aroma with just a hint of spice.  I'd definitely try this one again.

Thanks for sharing your notes on Komodo Dragon Blend.  I sure am enjoying reading them.  This week I have to say that daccord's, rossb's, and mgnicosia's notes are my favorite.  I had a hard time trying to describe the aftertaste of this coffee and mgnicosa's description may be close to what I taste in this week's featured bold coffee.

All-in-all this coffee is unmistakably bold - from its aroma to its finish.

I like the ranking of coffees too.  Thanks pechipy1, COFFEEISLIFE, James Devlin...

@Betterbefore - thank's for kicking the conversation off this week.

The brewed coffee team is interested in hearing which coffees you want to see on the future brewed coffee calendar.  So don't be shy - let us know.

My first reaction - WOW is this BOLD!  It flooded my mouth with the fullness of the taste!  After it cooled slightly I could taste the earthiness at first and then the varied spiciness and smoothness as it slipped away on my tongue.  But the earthiness seems to stick, not in a bad way, but for a long time after the initial taste.  I didn't think I would like this one when I first tried it, but I think I might get this one for my free bag, actually.  Thanks for this one!

Very earthy but gives it good flavor even when the coffee starts to get cold.  This makes is very versatile and I can see it used to make iced coffee.

I get Komodo Dragon from time to time, but infrequently enough that it's a refresher experience for me each time I get it (as it was for me again this week).  I've never been a fan of acidic coffees, so I must admit that Komodo Dragon sits fairly low on my list of Starbucks coffees.  The initial flavor when it's just been brewed is good, but the aftertaste is a bit much, and the flavor doesn't last well when it's been sitting for awhile.  The bitterness seems to become more pronounced as it cools or even before cooling if it's in a cup that extends the heat well.  Still, I enjoy the variety of bold coffees that Starbucks offers, so it's nice to be taken out of my comfort zone once in awhile. :)

I had a great mug of freshly brewed KD a couple of days ago. This was my first taste of this blend. The aroma was a bit smoky with some spiciness to it. It was full-flavored and dark, the epitome of a good bold coffee for me. I detected caramel and some fruitiness along with spice. I'd say this one ranks up there with Yukon as my favorites so far.

Cecile:  your comment about mgnicosa's description......the 'aftertaste' was described as 'metallic'.  I was with a friend this week who was having a cup of Komodo and describing her reactions...she kept saying:  metallic and chemical..aroma and aftertaste.  I thought that would be horrible....if I'd experienced that, I don't think I'd even drink it.  and yet, overall, she liked it..but less than the RED.  interesting.

I sampled Komodo Dragon Blend on Wednesday morning, but did not find the opportunity to describe it until now.  The aroma or fragrance of this blend is what I remember most.  I agree with many who have posted comments that it has an earthy smell; I would say it smells a bit floral, too.

I cannot precisely recall how to describe the flavor, which is commentary on my poor memory, not on the coffee.  I did notice that the Komodo Dragon Blend did not taste as much like Sumatra as I had expected.  (I am able to remember Sumatra, as I was gifted a whole pound of it once.)

Thus far, I believe Italian Roast may have my first place...

MY NOTES:

Smell: citrus, spice, earthy

Taste: very acidic, citrus, burn

After taste: spice and citrus

This was way to acidic for my tastes. Luckily MilitiaJim loves this coffee, so he can drink it all and not need to fight me off!

My preferences, best to worst, so far:

1) Italian Roast

2) Yukon

3) (STARBUCKS)RED

4) Komodo Dragon

This is a good coffee to drink with some kind of pastry or baked item, but I found it rather unappealing for regular drinking.  It does have a bit of a zingy, "crispness" to it, but the cups I've had this week have been rather thin mouth-feel...almost plain watery.  Certainly not a BOLD coffee, by any means.

4/3/2010 12:27 PM

A bit on the spicy side for my tastes. Earthy, as well.  Once you get over that, its only then that you realise how the citrus notes come out. Very distinct. However I think out of all four so far, its one of the more pleasant Bolds aside from Italian Roast.
