What’s old is new! Made in Japan, from recycled clay

Great stories are meant to be shared; sometimes over a cup of coffee. But what if the great story IS the cup from which you sip? Drink to this: on the opposite side of the Pacific Ocean, in Japan, sits a 400 year-old, family-owned factory that operates with zero waste. How? They collect and reuse rainwater, making mugs from the recycled clay of former mugs, dishes, saucers, and other well-loved ceramics that chipped or broke and were given back to a factory, through collection sites around the community. Cup Summit 2

You may have heard about the Cup Summit that was just held in Boston – over 100 people involved in the supply chain of our cups gathered together to brainstorm how to reach our goal of a recyclable cup by 2015. It was an amazing experience to watch a room full of people, many of whom had never met, become so engaged in problem solving, even though some of them are direct competitors. It was in no small part due to the inspiring guidance from Peter Senge and the team of systems graduate students from MIT, who facilitated the meeting. I grew up in a divided household, my dad is a morning person and my mom is not. My dad, a writer, would wake up around 4 a.m. My mom, an avid reader, would stay up late in the evening to turn just a few more pages. Strong coffee kept my childhood harmonious. After his first few cups of coffee and first few hours at his desk, my dad would brew a fresh pot around seven and gently set a mug on my mom’s nightstand, keeping communication to a minimum. In my own home, we've developed our own ritual, we take turns brewing the coffee. I am the morning person every other morning. New Highly Energy-efficient LED Lighting coming to a Starbucks near You

You probably haven’t noticed, but there has been a big change in some Starbucks stores. In fact, we hope you haven’t noticed – we’ve been switching out incandescent and halogen light bulbs in our stores for new LED bulbs which use significantly less energy - about 7% less energy per store, in fact. Based on a typical store, this will be equivalent to the energy used in a typical home for a year! LED bulbs have come a long way and we’ve been able to find some that provide the quality of light we needed in our stores – warm, inviting, and makes the coffee look even more delicious, and our customers even more beautiful. We are only 2 weeks away from the national launch of the NEW however-you-want-it Frappuccino® Blended Beverages and we’ve already begun to serve it in some stores. I thought I would give some background on how we developed these new products. Changing a product as beloved as the Frappuccino is not something we’d do lightly. So we tested the new customizable Frappuccino® Blended Beverages for two years in Austin, Tampa, and Dallas. We gathered feedback and listened to reactions from customers until we had it just right. This week’s stop on our Bold Coffee Journey has a special place in my heart – Chicago is my kind of town (next to Seattle!). I lived there for many years before coming to Seattle, so when I was given the chance to write about Gold Coast Blend®, developed especially for the Windy City, I jumped at it. Gold Coast Blend® was created in 1987 to celebrate Starbucks first foray out of the Pacific Northwest, to a city we knew would embrace Starbucks as its own.
