Popcorn at Starbucks…who knew?

Rich, buttery popcorn always reminds me of the drive-in theater.  (Oops, I guess I just gave away my age!)  Big, brown grocery bag filled with freshly popped popcorn and dotted on the outside with the little greasy spots of buttery, deliciousness.  Well, the drive-in is gone and sadly I no longer douse my popcorn in butter (wasn’t it great being a kid, when you didn’t care about things like that?) But thankfully, I still get to indulge in rich, tasty, fluffy popcorn.   Starbucks now offers two popcorn flavors at participating stores in the U.S. and Canada.

If you are like me and you love butter…you are in for a treat with the Classic Butter flavor and if you like things a little bit on the spicy side, Salt and Pepper flavor will be for you!   Both varieties are made with all natural ingredients (including, real butter!), and both have only 150 calories and 8 grams of fat, which is about 20% less than your average bag of chips.  Each batch of our popcorn is hand popped in kettles and the Salt and Pepper variety is made exclusively for Starbucks!  Also, in case you didn’t know this…corn is a grain, not a vegetable, so this snack is 100% whole grain and provides 3g of fiber per serving.

So it is possible to indulge your “flavor is king and calories shouldn’t count” side while still taking care of your, “responsible, I don’t get to eat popcorn out of the big brown bag anymore because that wouldn’t be prudent” side too. I guess life is pretty good…who knew?

I love the idea of being able to have a bag of popcorn, without the worry of transferring the microwave popcorn smell to the rest of my office!

I still find this amazing (been out for a while) for a coffee house.  and, it hasn't been selling well in my regular store.  I just don't associate popcorn  as something I'd have with anything-coffee.  I have heard it's quite good, but, like I said, I just don't see it in a coffee shop.

ps: to Lori, 'who knew'?  most of us, for a few weeks I think.  (maybe I'm just in the minority...;)

There is a small feeling of deja vu in this MSI blog entry. ;)  I love the flavor the butter popcorn, but you can't dunk it in Sumatra, and requires some dental floss in my purse. ;)

At my favorite Starbucks they sell out of the butter flavor within two days of receiving their allotment, it takes another couple of days for the salt and pepper to sell out.

I think Starbucks has added the popcorn as not necessarily something to "pair" with coffee, but something you take back to work for a snack later with a Starbucks label to be seen by all.

to DadC.......: which, to me, is what other little (or big) storeas are for...not Sbux.  not a coffee shop.  and especially when,  as time goes on, almost monthly, at least, we seem to lose more and more of the COFFEE options and/or focus at Sbux.  ;(

@DadCooks - I was kind of playing around a bit in my reply here. Now in a serious tone of voice:  I really really really like the buttered popcorn, but I'm not dunking it in coffee.  I don't care for the salt and pepper version. But taste is subjective of course.

@BetterBefore - I really don't care if Starbucks adds amazing snacks to buy while at their stores - even popcorn. I just don't like to see the whole bean wall slim down at the same time. Sidamo was just discontinued. I just sort of think both things have to be maintained side by side, even if the answer is the fragmented sending of single-origin coffee to Starbucks by regions, since single-origin coffee is hard to source. (you know the "proposal" I am referring to).

Interesting, but not coffee. I agree with Betterbefore and Melody.  I want more coffee options. I can get gourmet popcorn anywhere.

I wonder, how many Clover machines could have been rolled out with the money spent on bringing this popcorn to market?

How many stores could have been upgraded with the iPhone payment system?

I like new products, and I'm all in favor of making every square inch of a store pay for itself, BUT Starbucks needs to focus on a superior coffee experience. That's where your competition is gaining ground.

BTW, how many stores could have been upgraded with energy efficient LED lighting and water saving taps? (saving money the process)

@urbanvoy - Long time no see! I was just writing about finding all the Clovers over on my personal blog. (google Melody+Starbucks) - I wish I would see you over there!

I would imagine (though I don't really know) that you could make some of the same criticism about many of the food roll outs, that the money could have been better spent on Clovers, upgraded payment systems and so on. I almost think that Starbucks has to keep changing their offerings to prevent people getting tired and bored with the same food and snacks. The only challenge is pouring the exact same level of energy and money (if not more) in the coffee side of the business. Who drives Starbucks? The 8th floor cupping room, marketing, or food and beverage? Marketing I'd say.

Thanks Lori for sharing the news about the new popcorn at Starbucks.  This speaks to several ideas on the site about offering more diverse snacks - not just a sugary sweet, like a cookie.

For those of you who have commented about focus more on coffee - we have lots of cool coffee news to share soon.  Stay tuned!

If Starbucks can sell popcorn, why not potato chips?  There are times when I am in Starbucks for lunch or a snack and wish they sold potato chips.

It might not go with coffee, but it would probably go well with iced tea.  I keep forgetting to look for it though.  My Starbucks in Chicago must not be displaying it prominently, or maybe they aren't a participating store.

I had a opportunity to try the popcorn in Ohio.  It was great; but now I can not find it in Illinois or Wisconsin.

I did find it in Chicago at a store I don't usually go to.  And it does go well with iced tea.

@nkalish - Starbucks is currently carrying sweet potato chips.

My favorite is the salt and pepper popcorn.  A gourmet and an out of the ordinary popcorn enjoyment for me.  The 150 calorie serving size is just right for snacking without overloading on carbs.  A salty snack is just what your body needs to replace the salt you lost in sweating after a workout.  Thanks for making it available at Starbucks.

Make popcorn, Starbucks popcorn, fresh Starbucks popcorn at the stores. The smell of Coffee and Popped Corn go well together
