Free, One-click Wi-Fi is Here!

Today we launched our new Wi-Fi offering in all of our U.S. and Canada company owned stores.  Wi-Fi is now completely free for everyone!  On top of Wi-Fi now being free, we have also simplified the login process. That means no cards, no passwords, & no time restrictions. Simply come into your favorite Starbucks, open up a browser or mobile device, agree to terms and conditions and click connect. It’s that easy!

Free Wi-F is just another way we can enhance the in store experience for our customers!

Inspired by your ideas:

This is one of the best things Starbucks has done to keep it's customers.....most coffee shops have offered free internet for a long time.  Thank you Starbucks for realizing this is important to it's customers!!

I was surprised and delighted to discover it's come to Canadian SB as well!  Yesterday I was there for a drink and I went to sign on, only to discover the hassle of doing so with my iPod (which constantly had problems with all the darned pop-up windows) was at an end.  Thank you SB for bringing one-click WiFi to your stores.  Your customers appreciate it! :)

This was one of the "perks" of having a rewards card. Are we getting anything in return now that you're giving wifi to everyone?

Forget the rewards whiners - or just eliminate the whole rewards program (at least threaten to!).

On Wifi you finally did what the customers wanted and you should be congratulated. You also joined modern times since I get this in so many other places it was odd not to in your stores. I can now let go of the cranky independent coffee place I sometimes use when I need wifi because I got so annoyed with old way starbucks did this.

I'm a Gold Card member, and I think it's great that there is free Wi-Fi now. Card member with perks or not, it will keep people coming to Starbucks! They closed enough stores, we don't need them closing more! So come ye, come ye! *winks*

Much appreciated!

Starbucks can readily manage the inconcenience of people hanging out forEVER and clogging the store, as it is readily easy to limit the log-in time used to X minutes. As an example, Qwest allowed their customers to use Starbucks Wi-Fi (AT&T Wireless, actually) for a limited time (1 hour, as I recall). Starbucks can maintain the benefit of free Wi-Fi and discourage people moving in and using their store as a Home Office by limiting Wi-Fi use to a reasonable amount of time.

Thanks all for your support – we are as excited as you are. It is nice to see positive comments re: Wi-Fi on here! The response to free Wi-Fi has been overwhelmingly positive, but please let me know if you are experiencing any issues. Thanks.

On the surface this looks like a good thing for all but most of the Starbucks in my area have been cutting back on staff and downsizing the lobbies in favor of increasing drive thru business.   Today I went to 3 Starbucks looking for a seat in the lobby where I can work.

Finally got tired of driving around,   I am typing this from Scooters!

I agree with previous posters that free wifi was one of THE BEST decisions Starbucks has made in a while. I used to go to a number of other places that had free wifi and every time I did, Starbucks missed out on a purchase. I haven't seen a problem with people hanging out all day, even though some would say I am one of those people. Seriously, why would I want to sit in my office when I can do all of my work in a much nicer atmosphere? Most of the time, I'm not actually using the wifi, I'm just working. If it gets too crowded, I leave and let someone else have my spot. Since my Starbucks started offering free wifi, I end up making 2 or 3 separate purchases before I leave, instead of one.

I love the Wifi - I am only concerned about the security. Can't you get a major security provider to sponsor the connection itself - it sure would lend a lot of reassurance.
