Starbucks Salutes the 20th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)

Join us as we celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act.  Starbucks Access Alliance (partners with disabilities and allies of access) is joining with the Alliance of People with Disabilities in paying tribute to the ADA on July 26, 2010 at Seattle's Woodland Park Zoo’s North Meadow (5500 Phinney Ave N, Seattle) from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm.  We’ll be handing out packets of Starbucks VIA® Ready Brew while supplies last and displaying some of our products and marketing materials, such as mugs with sign language and our Braille brochure of our beverages (available for use in all of our US company-owned and licensed stores).

The tribute will include:
• Proclamation from the Governor
• Seattle City Councilmember Nick Licata and other speakers
• Comedian Al Foxx and a selection of local musicians with disabilities
• Over thirty booths with disability resources

The ADA, signed by President George W. Bush, is one of the most comprehensive civil rights laws prohibiting discrimination on the basis of disability.  To learn more about the ADA click here .

Hi kittysnyder,

I recommend that you reach out to social services.  An easy way to connect to them is by dialing 211.

Celebrating 20years of ADA is wonderful, however I do have questions.

.

How does a person who has physical and mental disabilities become employed by Starbucks; 'catch 22' 'two edge sword'.

If a person is friendly, can run a cash register, and not able to do all the physical STARBUCKS recommendations; then what is the point of celebrating 20 years [ADA]if persons who are not able to stand for long periods of time, twist, turn, lift are left unemployed.

By the way "Bipolar" people can be functional, so long as they get their medications.

Martha G, I think your heart may be in the right place; but have you ever attempted to apply for help w/social services? Being a counselor/case manager for many years...I can tell you there's more than just paperwork to do. What will they do if they don't have an address? What will they do if they have impediments that you or I are unable to SEE as the bipolar people? I really hope they get help through 211...it's all temporary [211 help that is].
