The Starbucks Digital Network in Stores Now

The Starbucks Digital Network, in partnership with Yahoo! is now in stores. As announced on June 14 the Starbucks Digital Network is a complement to our free Wi-Fi service. The network offers a selection of premium news, entertainment and local online content – all for free! Visit a participating U.S. Starbucks store with your Wi-Fi enabled laptop, tablet or smartphone, connect and you’ll automatically be directed to the Starbucks Digital Network. You'll be able to access the online subscriber version of WSJ.com, get free iTunes downloads, enjoy sneak peeks from unreleased books and find out what’s going on in your neighborhood.

We’re coming out of the gate strong with two songs and a video from Fistful of Mercy, an exclusive clip from the new movie Waiting for “Superman” and a first look at bestselling author Anita Shreve’s new novel, Rescue, that doesn’t hit shelves until November 30.

There are endless opportunities here and we have great additions planned – so keep coming back. It’s time to grab your Wi-Fi enabled device and head to your participating neighborhood Starbucks to check out the new Starbucks Digital Network, in partnership in Yahoo!

If I needed another reason to never leave a Starbucks, this is it.

Maybe there can a be link to a page with that store's Baristas where they can post comments, drink recommendations, favorite quotes, or anything else to help their customers get to know them better and feel more like part of the neighborhood & family.

How can customers contribute to the content? You should have a space on this new website to contribute to Starbucks ideas or to post reviews of particularly awesome stores (like mine!).

And maybe you could have a company column where you explain why you refuse to seriously consider the very popular Starbucks idea that you recycle cold, plastic containers. Are you locked into some multiple year contract with your vendor? Because right now, it is a complete contrast to your "we are socially responsible" image. In summer, in particular, the outside trash cans are overflowing with plastic cups that are just added to the landfill. If there is a reason you won't change, I'd like to hear what it is. Until then, I'll continue to pass on any cold drinks (cups or bottled) that you sell in your stores and bring my own reusable water bottle with me.

Would be curious if you would ever include localized content that is specific to that store or town you are in?

Great, now all you need is more outlets in your stores!!!  I was thinking that maybe the reason why Starbucks didn't have a lot of outlets was because they wanted to get rid of people who sat there and played on their laptops all day for free, but here is the thing about that......'that' is a coffee shop environment and will NEVER go away, so I think the best way to deal with it, is to embrace it and use it to your advantage.

Thanks for all the comments and I hope you are enjoying the first week of the SDN. We’ve had a very positive reaction to the site and the content available. We’ll have a new free download on iTunes every Tuesday – this week it is "In Every Direction" from Junip. We’ll be adding new content partners and features all the time so come in, enjoy, and as always keep providing feedback.

FYI. For your iPhone users…download the myStarbucks app and open it when you are inside a Starbucks. You’ll see an SDN icon appear that will take you directly to the SDN!
