City Mugs FAQ’s

Hello!  Sarah here, from the Merchandise team.  I’ve noticed many questions and/or comments on MSI pertaining to our City Mug series.  Whether or not you are a collector, many wonder if their hometown is worthy of a Starbucks® City Mug.  I’m here to shed some light on a customer favorite.

When did the series start?

City Mugs were first offered by Starbucks in 1994.  From 1994 – 2007, the mugs weren’t as consistent as the ones in store today.  Each varied in design that suited its respective market or city.  In 2007, we launched the ‘Architect’ series, and later the ‘Global’ series.  Both assortments share a design theme.

Where can I find City Mugs?

Currently, you can find them in 223 international locations, and in 52 locations across the US and Canada.

Does the series offer anything besides mugs?

Yes, we offer an expanded assortment in some international markets: mugs, tumblers and a pair of demitasse cups.  You can also find the City design on tumblers at some of our licensed-stores.

What criteria must be met for my city to be considered for a Starbucks’ city mug?

The city or state must have a minimum amount of stores in a metropolitan area that can support a minimum order quantity.

This quick FAQ sheet is a response to some of the general questions out on MSI.  If you have an inquiry that remains unanswered, please post to this thread, and I’ll do my best to reply.  Thanks for your comments!

Thanks for the informative post.

Too bad the majority of folks will not read this and you'll still get a lot of "city mug" requests.

What may placate some of the mug requestors would be if what mugs are made would also be available at the StarbucksStore.com. I for one would buy Chicago and San Fransico mugs.

24-hours and no other comments, but sure enough another mug request on MSI.

Too bad people can't slow down their lives enough to read and learn.

IMHO, this social networking mentality fostered by Facebook, Twitter, etc. is making people lazy and...

(probably some debate will start now)

Starbucks, keep trying to educate and inform--some people will get it.

Is there a chance to get a list posted online of all the official mugs created.  Sometimes I've visited a city that does have quite a few locations and the staff don't even know if one exists for their city?  It would save time for those who travel around and collect.

I live in Perth, Western Australia

Sadly there are no Starbucks in Perth at all.

I have been collecting the city mugs for a couple of years when I visit other cities. I have Hong Kong, Cebu, Manila, Melbourne.

My question is - can I order these online?

Thanks

I spoke to my local barista today and asked her why my state didn't have a mug and she said that not enough people in the state have requested one and I should go on here to do so.  It looks like this may not be accurate those from the comment above about having to have a minimum amount of stores.  Can you let me know for sure about what I was told?

Thanks!

I love them!  Started collecting them a few months ago!

And what about the earlier series of black and white city mugs?  And the earlier ones with the colored panels.  There were dozens of these, all for different cities, but all with the same design theme.  And these mugs certainly existed before 2007.  Don't they count?

I was in Niagara Falls two weeks ago.  I went to six Starbucks' stores.  None had any Niagara Falls Mugs.  Canada mugs were there- in huge numbers in some stores, but not one Niagara Falls mug to be found anywhere.  Disappointing.

What about tumblers?  I see Chicago Starbucks tumblers on EBay.  Do any of the Chicago stores have them?  Where would I go?  I need a dozen of them.

I've traveled around the world, just came back from central Europe (Czech, Germ, Austria, Hungary) and most of the Starbucks' had the mugs... I've purchase the several from the far east and toted them around.  Being a light traveler, I assumed that you could order them online and have them shipped.  I have not found where that is possible...  Please advise how to order them.  Steve

P.S. I would vote for a Kansas City mug too.

Hello again!  To answer the latest questions—

@ trailside & JellyfishKing, earlier this year we offered city tumblers from select U.S. cities on our website.  Currently, our feeling is that part of the magic of collecting is the ‘hunt.’  If we offered the series online, some of the delight and exclusivity would disappear!  Any customer could nab a mug from any part of the world, without visiting the location.  What’s the fun in that?

@ChicagoCapen, we offer city tumblers in our licensed stores—typically, these service airports, hotels and grocery stores.  If your local grocery store has a Starbucks, that might be a good place to start.

@OneLumporTwo, we had a Niagara Falls ‘Architect’ mug a few years ago.  It didn’t meet our performance expectations, but we’ve received a lot of recent demand for it.  We’re exploring the option of re-introducing it into the assortment.  Stay tuned.

@snshown, requests always help—as they say, ‘the squeaky wheel gets the grease!’  If we see a significant number of demand for a single location, then we’ll look at store count and traffic within that area, and go from there.

Thanks for your questions and comments!

Hello Sarah,

Been to Starbucks in Niagara Falls (Pretty much all stores each time) twice in November and December and I have yet to see a Niagara Falls city mug. We always getting told that they are on back order. How long does it takes to get the stocks replenished? There are many Canada mugs available but it's not the same.

And yes, as the National Capital of Canada, Ottawa should have a city mug as well as Quebec City. There is too many tourists in these 2 places to pretend there is not enough demand for them.

I was wondering if 4 stores was enough because our famous Quebec City Has only 4 stores but has a worldly renown. I just celebrated it's 400th anniverary!

anyway let me know

Add me to the list of people looking everywhere for a Niagara Falls city mug.  Replenish the stocks please!

Hard to believe that Banff gets a city mug and Winnipeg or Ottawa doesn't.

Hi Sarah,

I work in Starbucks Boldstreet in Liverpool. I noticed there’s a lot of people asking for a city mug for their city on this website, and although I would be most delighted not to bugger you on this one, I think there’s a strong case to be made for Liverpool. Liverpool is only second to London as the most visited city in the UK and with good reason. Liverpool is, among other things, famous for being the birthplace of the Beatles of course and we’ve got people coming from all over the world to see Penny Lane, Strawberry Field and the Cavern Club among many, many other Beatles related sites. Music tourism alone is massive here, and the amount of Starbucks loving tourists coming to our store with recently purchased Beatles souvenirs is not to be underestimated.

The Beatles aside, Liverpool attracts visitors (mostly) from Asia, North-America and Europe non-stop for all kinds of reasons. The international following of Liverpool FC is massive - we’ve had people from all over Europe coming to attend football matches (Last year an estimated 4000 people came from Holland to support their team for a single match, for example, most of them camping the entire afternoon in our stores) and quite often people from other countries, like Spain and Italy, come over to support Liverpool FC too.

Liverpool has got a thriving cultural scene - the city was even Capital of Culture in 2008 - and music events like Sound City and Creamfields as well as the Tate Gallery hosting a Picasso exhibition attracted many many many people to our city, an awful lot of them visiting Starbucks and hoping for a Starbucks/ Liverpool souvenir.

The economy is not too bad at the moment (it could be worse) but as you may now, every little helps, and right now we find ourselves seeing visitors from the other side of the world coming to our stores with spending money, and we are only able to offer them a mug with ‘Edinburgh’ on it. Because we do sell mugs with Edinburgh on it, the Scottish city that famously got nothing to do with us. The England mug we have does sell, as does the London mug, but having to explain to customers that a city people from all over the world know and love is too small for its own mug is not in my personal top ten of favourite things to do during my shift.

I have heard it’s the company’s policy only to produce mugs for cities with a certain amount of Starbucks stores, but I would appreciate it if you could help us out here. I’m sure you’ve got other things to do, but if you got a spare moment (and please feel free to get yourself a drink first now you finished reading this epic request), but I think that having Liverpool Starbucks mugs would definitely enlighten our customers.

Thank you,

Floris

Will Starbucks offer different designs for the City mugs.  They are starting to look the same.  My Memphis and Austin mugs are two different shades of green, but each have a musician as the main picture.  Kind of boring.  I know, I should be grateful you offer city mugs at all, and I am.  Just wondering if we have something exciting to look forward to.

Wondering if you can list the actual Starbucks that sell the City Mugs -or even just the airports that sell them.  Being a light wieght traveller as well, I like to pick them up on my way home.  But have been very disappointed a few times to find that the airport Starbucks did not have any?  If I know the airport I am departing from does not carry them I could at least  look around the city I am in prior to leaving.

Thanks,

Hello and good day!

There re actually lots of people around the world who have been enticed to collect Starbucks mugs (and other merchandise). I  would love to see an official site from Starbucks itself that has a list of all mugs, presently manufactured, discontinued, and future additions. Just to keep us more enticed.

Thanks

Hello Sarah,

I am the spouse of an active duty military member.  In our last move (these happen often) from Italy back to the USA, three of my treasured Starbucks city mugs were broken!!  I was wondering if there is anyway that I can replace them?

Also, in our new location here in Oklahoma City, I am told by the Baristas that City mugs are not offered here.  With a city so rich in culture and tradition, not to mention a large number of Starbucks locations, I am surprised a city mug has not bee created!

Thanks so much!! Happy Holidays!

On one hand, I think the hunt is important, on the other hand, getting replacements seems like a great way for Starbucks to help customers reconnect with those timeless memories while traveling.  I got my first in China and for fear of something happening to it, I have stopped using it.

I think it could also be a big motivator to have a mug to a city that you would want to go to one day.  I would love to go to Wales where my grandfather lived and that mug whould be really cool.

I've noticed the Global Icon mugs becoming scarce in the cities/places that I've visited lately.  Example...Sacramento & Alaska. Has anyone else noticed this?

Please don't end this series.

We've started traveling a lot more  since 2010 because of this series.  I suggest adding more cities.  They've been really motivating for us, and have been great souvenirs and gifts.

I find it very difficult to believe that there is no New Jersey Icon mug in your collection. It can't be that there are not enough Starbucks in the state? I have about 20 within a 10 mile radius of my home. And please don't tell me that we are covered by NY and Philadelphia. We are a distinct area with our own distinct personality. I know about the AC and the NJ state of bean series. How about an updated one with in the Icon series. Heck. even Dunkin Donuts has a NJ mug! You could feature the NJ shore, the Palisades, Newark,  Thomas Edison, Hoboken, Bruce Springsteen, Sinatra. the list goes on an on. I fnd it very hard to believe you can have mugs from all these obscure places on the planet and not have one for NJ. Maybe you could reduce the number you have for Seattle, What are you up to now. about 50 different mugs? Please! Lets go! Get one for NJ!

BTW: The NY icon Mug with the Statue of Liberty, She is actually geographically in NJ!

I too will agree with many of the previous post about certain cities not having their own mugs.  I was recently in Virginia and only after visiting 7 different Starbucks location was I told that Virginia or any city within the state had a mug; definitely disappointing.  I just don't understand because where I live in Orange County, CA, most of the stores carry the "California" and "Orange County" mugs.  Additionally there are three (3) other cities in California with their own mugs...Los Angeles, San Diego and San Francisco. I would like to think that at least having each U.S. state represented in the city mug series...I would collect them all.

I also support the idea of having a comprehensive list of all of the "current" mugs available for purchase on the main website.

Thanks

Does anyone from Starbucks read this thread anymore??? No one ever answers questions or posts comments. Why do you have this here if no one from Starbucks is paying any attention to it??? Collectors of Starbucks mugs spend a lot of money in your stores. I, personally, hate coffee, especially yours, but I buy tons of mugs. If it wasn't for your collectible mugs, I would not be a Starbucks customer. I think this thread deserves to have some answers. My husband loves Starbucks & gets coffee every day, but he hasn't spent anywhere close to what I've spent buying your mugs…so, who is the better customer?

Please offer the mugs online. We recently came back from our los cabos trip & was super excited to buy the mug there. We visited all four starbucks stores to hunt for my mug & all four stores were out or did not carry it! I'm so disappointed, I was so excited to get my Los Cabos mug. I see a seller selling it on eBay & Amazon but I can not and will not pay $85 for a mug! Please please offer it online!
