Check In at Starbucks

Location-based social networks are all the rage these days. After you tweet a witty thought on Twitter and update your Facebook with an equally witty (but separate) observation, let your friends know that you are at a Starbucks with Facebook Places or Foursquare. This week we have some fun announcements to let you know about.

We’re excited to be among one of the first companies to work with Facebook on their new Deals product. We are collaborating with our friends at Conservation International to help save forests. For each Starbucks check-in on Facebook Places, Starbucks will donate $1 to Conservation International up to $75,000. All you have to do is stop by and check in! (Be sure to update your Facebook mobile app first.)

Earlier this week we introduced Starbucks Check In. This is a new app that allows you to earn virtual gifts to share with friends when you check into Starbucks on Facebook Places. Just for loading the app, we’ll give you a virtual Starbucks Red Cup to share with your friends. The more you check in, the more virtual gifts you can earn to share. Check it out!

Of course, if you haven’t done so already, you can still earn a Barista Badge on Foursquare. Check in to five different Starbucks and you’ll get a badge and be the envy of all of your friends.

Can I be honest?

I don't trust Facebook, not after all the privacy gaffes they've had lately.  I'm not willing to trust the security of Facebook Places as a result.

My personal preference for Foursquare is solely based on the fact that I can hide my check-ins from everyone if I so desire.  I don't see an option to hide a check-in on Places.

I like the donation idea, but it's not worth my privacy.

I agree with TJCinMaryland's points, and more so.

IMHO... <redacted by author due to too strong an opinion about the folly of social networking sites, oops I guess part of my opinion got in anyway>

What about Whrrl? Whrrl is a location-based service/app.

4sq does and location based stuff is not taking off  yet like Facebook - I think big companies are doing this stuff because they think it will. I think it won't. I deeply suspect far fewer folks want to broadcast their locations vs. sit in private and get to check out what others are doing/posting/photos etc. The benefits may be for a few (college students etc) but for the masses - forget it. Think about how many of your friends use the facebook "check-in" - for me it is about 2 of 150 friends.

My issue with Facebook Places is its inaccessibility on BlackBerry. I'm a BB fan, and always will be! Foursquare is the place to be if you want to use location-based. It is much more broad.

Facebook keeps saying it'll broaden places, but no signs yet!
