Why Aren't There More 24-hour Stores?

 Hello,

My name is Trish and I’m a regional director in Northern California. I’m also an MSI moderator on this site and look for your ideas around store operations. As partners and leaders in the company, we try to make the people who visit our stores happy every day.

A top idea on MSI is for more 24-hour stores. A few years ago in my area, we selected two off-the-highway stores with strong evening traffic, one of which was a Drive Thru. They were well-performing stores with strong, tenured store managers. The partners were enthusiastic and customers were thrilled. It was very exciting.

We worked through some of the operational obstacles we faced the first few months to ensure we were providing great service, quality beverages and fresh food all day and all night. But going 24 hours at these two stores impacted our ability to provide uplifting experiences for partners and customers alike.

So after about a year, we changed both stores back to a 20-hour day – and the store morale and customer experience quickly improved. Partners felt a sense of relief when we shared the decision and most customers understood.

I wanted to give you some answers why we don’t have many 24-hour stores. Currently we have 63 of them. We will continue to look at adding more 24-hour stores where it makes sense. There are some amazing stores that can create a great experience 24/7, and we do hope to add more.

In the meantime, keep your store suggestions coming!

Good post and information, too bad the people who need to read this will not make the effort to click to this area of MSI.

Hello sbx_brew

May I suggest with 24 hour stores, 4 shift method, it works very well with companies in industries that have to operate/run 24/7 365 days of the year. Otherwise it would put a drain on the partners. I have been to some of the use-to-be 24 hour stores. The partners were very busy and very tired. The 4 shift method or expanded 4 shift method, the employees of companies I visit that use a such method are happy and perfer it. I believe 911 emergency uses a simular method. Starbucks has 63 store that are 24 hours that are left. Tryout another method.

This Starbucks is usually jammed packed and i believe used to be 24 hours. I was glad it was open but felt bad for the partners, one could tell at least i did that they were tired, almost a continuous line of people, in any of my visits, there has always been a steady flow of people.

Hi Trish!

My name is Melody and I'm a customer in Seattle.  That was a helpful blog post. I can honestly see how have a 24-hour store would be a wear and tear on store morale.  There has to be the down time for everything from a giving the store a deep cleaning, to set up for promos.  It would feel like there would be simply no way to ever have a store meeting without customers present.

I too have had moments of wanting a 24 hour Starbucks stores, though the times I would be use them would actually be so infrequent.  I can't recall the last time (if ever?) I've been at a Starbucks, after midnight but before five in the morning.

Thanks again!

Melody

Try a another method 4 shift method or expanded 4 shift method

when i stated above that employees perfer this method

they perfer it more so, than the regular way a week is currently scheduled. Not all but most. I know I would.

The only thing that has created an interest in 24 hr is likely that McDonalds and other quick serve folks are moving to 24 hours lately - at least in the DC metro area they all are. But that said - 20 hours is perfectly fine with me for Starbucks. Maybe in airports, on certain highways etc it might make sense - but the shopping center locations just seem to not need to be open that long. As a customer I just do not expect it. If anything I just wish my local one opened an hour or so earlier in the morning. But I have no need to go there from midnight to 4am.

People end up with more full days off in a row. Some have alternating weekends off. Two of the few variations that I have seen.

[ 3 days on, 3 days off  4 days on, 4 days off ] repeat continuously -- 4 crews for 4 shifts

Trish,

I noticed that at least two 24-hour stores in Manhattan have convereted their hours. The store at 60th and Broadway, and 67th and Columbis, both of which used to be open all day, are now open from 5am-1am. Can you explain the reason for the change? And should the company be worried that it will lose business to Dunkin' Donuts and McDonalds which are open all night?

Believe it or not, I often have to be at work before the stores opens.

Thanks!

Duane

3 days on, 3 days off  4 days on, 4 days off - repeat continuously -- 4 crews for 4 shifts------- just like everything else that works great - people at first will be  apprehensive about the schedule change - but will find it fantastic maybe in a month. How many people get 3 day off in a row ? Then 4 days off in a row ? It works for full time and part time, shift and store managers. Going to work 5-6 days in a row, for maybe 8 hours a day when the commute to work and home is an 1 hour.  This is wasteful expense, on the employees. Employees save money, and have better useful quality time off.

Hello,

I'm wondering if their are any 24 hour stores in British Columbia Canada?

I think where there is a demand for 24 hr store hrs or the franchise operator wants to offer 24hr service every effort should be done to make it successful as many people don't work or live in a 9-5 world.

I see the problem. Why there are few 24 hour stores. Also, why there are not many stores that are open till even mid-night or later.
