Skinny Holiday Beverages - Under Review

Hi all,
Louisa, the product manager of holiday espresso here.

What could be better than our delicious Peppermint Mocha? Having one with one-third fewer calories and sugar-free sauce, of course! I’m excited to announce that this holiday season in select markets, we are testing Skinny Peppermint Mocha.

This light version of our Peppermint Mocha is made with sugar-free mocha sauce, sugar-free peppermint flavored syrup, espresso and nonfat milk. With only 100 calories for a tall, this drink is a delicious treat you can enjoy every day. It’s also fantastic iced or as a Skinny Peppermint Hot Chocolate.

We work hard to provide healthier versions of your favorite beverages. If any of you in our test markets have had one, how did you like it? We’d love to hear what you think!

Inspired by your ideas:

GREAT idea. I would LOVE to see this in my area - hope I don't have to wait till next holiday season. The more calorie-conscious drinks you can come up with, the more I will be walking through the door!

If they've got sugar-free mocha sauce, they can make you a skinny mocha.  They don't have to add the peppermint syrup.

The last sugar-free mocha sauce was not a success, so I don't blame them for wanting to test it out.

I'm hoping that you'll bring back all the holiday syrups in a sugar free version and also offer mocha as sugar free as well-year round. The sugar free mocha was delicious in my opinion and I was very surprised when it was discontinued. I really wonder if it's success (or lack thereof) was more due to people not knowing about it rather than having anything to do with taste.

I used to love these flavors and felt it unfortunate for your faithful sugar- free customers to be overlooked. Bring back the gingerbread, pumpkin spice, peppermint mocha....

I avoid the entire category of drinks that start to get into "mocha" or anything you serve that includes whip cream on top etc due to the calories. It is not about price for me - but if I knew some of these seasonal flavored drinks were not the equivalent of drinking a milk shake in fat/cal I would try them - so good luck with experiments like this...I just might break down and try one.

carollk
11/22/2010 5:51 PM

You can easily have them make the drink without whipped cream (that by itself takes off around 100 calories) and use nonfat milk.

Please make the skinny peppermint mocha available this year! I'm dying to try one and it's not available in my area. I would hate to wait until next year's holiday season to try one, so please launch them soon!!!

I also agree with the other posters, I would love to have more sugar free syrup options available. I would visit alot more often if you had more sugar free flavors!

I was shopping yesterday here in Michigan and when I stopped at my favorite Starbucks for a shopping pick me up the barista told me that certain places were test marketing Skinny Peppermint Mocha, and all either of us wanted to know was when will this be coming to Michigan?   It would be a great add to the Christmas shopping season here!

Hi there! I am in LOVE with peppermint mocha-but not in love with what it does to my waistline, especially during a season already filled with fattening treats. I would love it if the skinny peppermint hit PA. Where can we find this tasty indulgence?

Please make this available all over year round-I love peppermint mocha but only indulge rarely bc I know they are not the healthiest option.  This skinny version would be really awesome!!!

11/29/2010 12:18 PM

There are no Starbucks around me that have this option.  However, I would frequent Starbucks 10 times as much as I did now if they had more of a sugar free menu.  I think the steps you have already taken to be healthier are great, I just feel the sugar free line up could use some work!  Even if it was a special to change the sugar free option every month!!  Thanks for listening!

I went to my Starbucks and was about to order my usual Grande Skinny Carmel Latte, when out of the corner of my eye I saw the exact sign above.  I was contemplating ordering it only because it was only a tall and im used to my drinks being GRANDE!!   Well, I figured a tall would be ok that morning, so I got it!!  Yummmmm!!

Later that day, I looked online to see it on the menu at sbux.com but it wasnt there. I emailed customer service regarding this 100c drink to see if it was true or if I just read the sign wrong, and a few days later, I received an email back saying it was true!!  Because I am a weight watcher, the calories mean a lot to me and the response did also!!

I love Starbucks!!  Great idea and great addition to the holiday menu!!

I live in San Jose and didn't realize this was only done in certain markets, but I am super glad I am in one!  I love this drink (although I request mine with extra peppermint) and get it a few times a week.  I'm a diabetic and on WW, so I never order sweet drinks.  This is great!!

I recently visited family in Tennessee and went to a Starbucks  expecting to have to splurge on the Peppermint Mocha, when I saw the sign for the new skinny version. I was so excited as this is my absolute favorite Starbucks drink, but it usually comes at a hefty calorie price tag. The skinny version is absolutely delicious and relatively guilt-free. They should have it at all the stores! I'm a little sad though because I didn't realize it was just a test market, so I'm not sure if they'll have them at a Starbucks in my area (Chicago).

11/30/2010 11:41 AM

Oh my, I'm BEGGING you to make this a menu item in Michigan!  Peppermint Mocha's are the whole reason I started drinking coffee...and I can't bear to give up 300+ calories to a drink that I already order with skim milk and no whip!  Being a member of WW, that is truly a rare treat...but if you had a Skinny version at 100 calories, I could easily incorporate that into my daily points value!  Please consider putting it on the menu, as I know at most Starbuck's you can get Peppermint drinks year round anyway, it would be a wonderful addition to those of us watching our calorie intake!!  PLEASE!!!

Would love to see more skinny drinks....esp the pumpkin spice and gingerbread.....would definitely get them more often if they weren't so caloric......this is esp the case since I cannot drink milk, so can't go with skim and am already adding some calories by getting soy

would also love to see drinks made with coconut milk (unsweetened So Delicious brand is 50 calories a cup and tastes wonderful), but I am not really expecting to see that happen, so the only option I (and the many others who are lactose intolerant) have for lower calorie drinks is the sugar free

bayviewkid
12/6/2010 10:38 PM

Why not focus on providing a wider variety of sugar-free syrups not because of calories but to allow the diabetic community to have  the same enjoyment others do.  Even though this might not be required by the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) it surely is in that spirit and if marketed accordingly would bring Starbucks even greater respect and much additional business. By the way the GINGERBREAD latte was my favorite before I was no longer allowed to have sugar.

I am IN LOVE with the new Skinny Peppermint Mocha Frappuccino. I am drinking one right now! I don't even taste a huge difference between this and the regular! I can no longer have sugar (not on a diet, I mean my system can't handle sugar anymore FOREVER) and my saddest treat loss was your Peppermint Mocha Frapp! This new drink made my holiday season! I would love to see it in Skinny Peppermint White Mocha also, and Skinny Pumpkin, too... but if I had to choose, I would definitely stick with the current Skinny Peppermint Mocha. It is AMAZING. PLEASE don't discontinue it, ever! I am promoting the heck out of it to anyone around me who will listen! THANK YOU!

I just tried a Skinny Peppermint Mocha this morning and loved it. It has a great peppermint and smooth chocolate flavor. I was very happy with my purchase. However, I was given a card at Starbucks which said I could go online to take a survey of the drink. It said once I completed the survey, I would receive a $5 Starbucks gift card. I went online, following the link supplied to me on the card, and got a window that said the survey was closed. It was supposed to be available until December 21st. They should have kept the survey open until the stated date. No $5 gift card for me, sadly. :-(

I went to the Starbucks in Jackson, TN this evening, and I was pleasantly surprised to learn that they had sugar-free mocha and sugar-free peppermint syrups. I ordered a peppermint mocha with these syrups, sans milk, and I was overwhelmed by how delicious and sweet the drink was. It tastes almost identical to the original! Suspicious of its deliciousness, I did an about face back to the counter to demand the barista check to make sure the syrup he used was sugar-free. He laughed and happily told me it was. I was floored.

Don't ever discontinue this sugar-free offering!!!!!!!

Peppermint Mocha is my favorite from Starbucks.  However I'm on Weight Watchers so it's not on my points list.  I switched to Skinny Vanilla or Hazelnut Latte's.  Not my favorites but with in my points budget for me to keep going to Starbucks.  I would be all kinds of tickled pink if Starbucks would offer a Skinny Peppermint Mocha so I could drink my favorite and not blow my points budget.  It's such a great idea!!  Come on Starbucks, make it a regular on the menu!!!  :)

I love your holiday beverages and I'm glad to see the sugar-free.

I'm concerned about aspartame though ... do the sugar-free syrups contain aspartame?

If so, is it possible to switch to stevia?  This a much healthier alternative to aspartame.

It seems that I am in the minority here but as excited as I was to find a skinny peppermint mocha, I didn't love the taste. It left an odd aftertaste, like many artificial sweeteners tend to do. I would love to see the nutritional comparison to the regular peppermint mocha to see if the off taste is really worth it. I usually get a low-fat, no whip, less chocolate syrup peppermint mocha. It would be great to see how they compare.

This is wonderful!!  Please please PLEASE keep the peppermint and mocha sugar free offerings past the holiday season!  Over this past summer I have lost over 60lbs, but my peppermint mocha was my one treat I allowed myself to have twice a week.  Now that it is available in sugar free/skinny version, I can have it much more often if I like!  For those of us watching sugar and calorie content, please keep adding sugar free flavors - results in a more frequent customer here!

I live in the Houston area and we have the skinny peppermint mocha here. It is absolutely wonderful! I don't usually like the aftertaste of sugarfree drinks, but the peppermint seems to cover that. The sad part is they have said it is only for the holidays, hate to hear that. This is the first sugarfree drink starbucks has come out with that I like. Perhaps it could become a regular flavor? and maybe even with stevia instead of spenda.

This has absolutely made my holiday season brighter! When moving to a healthier lifestyle, the peppermint mocha had to go even as a seasonal treat. This made my day even in a small way! I have many friends who have said the same. I truly hope this trend continues to make healthier versions of all drinks! My hope is that a sugar free chai latte follows for year round deliciousness!
