Brewed and Food Express Line

Do you ever dream of walking into your Starbucks and having a very special line that serves only the beverage you want – and quickly too? Over 30,000 of you have told us that you do!

Many of you suggested that a line created solely for brewed coffee would speed up your day, and it’s something you would like to see in our stores. We think it’s an interesting idea too.

So we are testing brewed coffee and food express lines in several stores in the Chicago metro area. The express line will be for the morning rushes; you can purchase hot or iced brewed coffee, hot tea, any food item, Starbucks VIA® Ready Brew and other merchandise.

So, if you’re in the Chicago area and you visit one of these stores, let us know what you think.

Hi Leslie!

Is it just my imagination or is Starbuck suddenly writing more often and talking more often about their "tests"?  This looks like an interesting test and I wonder more about what kind of stores it will work in.

That's an interesting store with the orange and yellow walls!

Thanks for the update! Let us know if this idea would work successfully in a Clover store too??

Thanks, Melody

Is that the store that's practically across street from me on Halsted?  I can't remember the color of the walls, but the layout looks exactly the same.

Leslie, I too appreciate the information on the "tests" that has been appearing with increasing frequency.

It is too bad that the people who are involved with store design are being too concerned with how the store looks and are really not spending the time to make operations on both sides of the counter more efficient.

I do hope the "express line" experiment goes well.

Hopefully this will speed up service for those of use that order speciality drinks.

Leslie-

I'm a partner in Boston and me and my SM at the time were the original founders of this Brewed Express concept that inspired the test in Chicago.

Check out our Brewed Express line at One International Place in Boston as well! It's fast and available Monday through Friday from 8am-10am and 2pm-4pm.

Love that it made it out to Chicago! :)

@ COFFEEIS:   I have yet to see any electronic screens anywhere in the Chicago area.   That is (obviously) not to say they're not here, but I have never seen one.  not in the city (where a couple of these express =line stores are), not in the 'burbs.    and hopefully I never will.

@carolk:  I don't know about where you are on Halsted but I know one of these x-press lines stores is in the loop, on LaSalle......    in fact, two in the loop I believe.

and, re: the colors......I don't ever recall seeing these colors in any Sbux here but obviously the pictured store is this way.

It would be nice if the exact location of this pictured store would be added .........

and, lastly, from what I have been told by a few people I know who work as lawyers and/or bankers in the loop, the LaSalle St x-press line store is working very well.

uh-oh, lastly again:  at one of our two Clover stores here (in all of Chicago),  the times I have been there, the Clover person (with 2 Clovers) was making all the Clover coffee AND the frapps.  Apparently it works ok for them but it seemed amazingly un-balanced to me.  as for an x=press line for Clovers, that would seem IDEAL here at least.  that's my guess.

Thanks, betterbefore.  I am in the 2200 block in the Lincoln Park neighborhood.  I walked by the 2200 Halsted store just a couple of days ago and forgot to check the paint colors.  I will do that this week. :)

I drink mostly brewed coffee - so I like this idea. But only in stores large enough to accommodate two meaningful lines. Many stores in the DC area are too small to have two lines that can form well without confusion among customers.

It is NOT the Starbucks at Halsted & Webster.

This will fail in a lot of stores. Formost most stores only have one barsita doing the register. Secont most if not all the starbucks here in az and downtown seattle are to small to even have a secont line and a giant sign. A lot of starbucks in az* here have to decide a lot advertising or seats in a alot of stores ive been told and personally seen.

Starbucks seems to be progressing in to the plaza stores a lot more and if you notice there is not enought room for usually 4 tables and alot of stores have taken out the sofa's and such because there is no room.

MIATAMX5,

The concept behind this test is really meant to troubleshoot and resolve capacity issues for stores that have hit a ceiling with long lines during the morning rush and other busy dayparts.

The Brewed Express line is great because it not only answers the call to a request that so many of our customers have asked for, but allows us to serve our customers within a wait time they expect from us- even when the amount of people in line exceeds 20! Granted, the system works for stores that have the space to support it; I hope some more stores take the leap and give this concept a try- customers (and partners) love it!

I thought it would make sense if it were for brewed coffee only-why can people order food in this line?  that's what takes so long is to get the food and merchandise and for people to make up their mind about what they want to get...it should be just for brewed coffee-period!  It will end up taking LONGER for a brewed coffee this way...I really don't understand...

At least Starbucks tried the coffee only line thing. I myself like to keep things simple.

Brilliant. Please make this available in all Starbucks locations!

There is nothing more annoying than having to wait in line for my first morning cup of coffee while the person in front of me decides what type of breakfast sandwich they might or might not want.

MUCH NEEDED! My Starbucks is in a touristic area, and I spend well over 10 minutes in line every day, twice a day, waiting for people to figure our what a frappuccino even is.
