Happy Anniversary, My Starbucks Rewards!

A first anniversary is an exciting event, and we’re happy and proud to celebrate our first one for My Starbucks Rewards.

Over the last year we’ve grown a lot! Many of you have grown along with us, and we’ve been really encouraged. By sharing your passionate ideas on My Starbucks Idea, you’ve inspired us to make My Starbucks Rewards a valuable part of your Starbucks experience.

During our first year, we sent trial offers to Gold level members introducing them to our newest food and beverage innovations: Perfect Oatmeal, Artisan Snack Plates, However-You-Want-It Frappuccino® blended beverages and our Skinny Lattes (to name just a few). We plan to keep sending our most devoted members more surprises in the coming year, so make sure you’re getting those Stars!

While we’re at it, we thought now is a great time to remind you – for those currently at the Gold level – that you’re probably nearing your own 12-month anniversary. This means you should check your account to make sure you’re on track to earn 30 Stars and keep your Gold status for another year.

The traditional gift for a first anniversary is a paper item, but I guess we can skip the formalities and jump right to Gold!

I laugh at this "on track to earn 30 stars" statement.  I probably don't want to know how many stars I've earned....but I get a free drink card like every two weeks. It's kind of awesome, but also kind of sad. lol.

I agree.  30 is a joke.  SBUX needs an Uber Gold, Platinum, and then Titanium for people who get 200+ stars in a year.  30....weak.

I decided to check my account (I never do this) just to see how many stars I have this year...223!! OMG I agree there needs to be a new level for us Sbux fanatics.

OMG! I just checked mine. Three hundred and eight two (382!) in the last year! Why hasn't my heart exploded yet? What comes after titanium?

For every 5 transactions I make with my American Express at Dunkin' Donuts I get a $5 gift card, no matter the amount of the transaction. Could you guys one that up? It's be awesome!

I love my B-day present, but that's almost nothing compared to the other 40 $5 gift cards from DD every year (4 per month on avg since I have breakfast there almost every day).

DD would give me headaches and stomachaches especially when drinking DD on an empty stomach, I thought it was me, until i switched to Starbucks Coffees, no more problems. So there's nothing to top. Starbucks is the top.

I was thinking there should be a higher level for those of us who make it to the level of 1,000 to 1,500 + stars. ;-)

Sally, congrats on the one year anniversary of My Starbucks Rewards!!

Thanks everyone for the congratulatory wishes!  The idea of an even higher tier than Gold level is something we have long thought about.  It's not out of the question but there is a lot to consider- how many Stars is too high or hard to reach?  How many is still too low?  If there was an even higher level, what would be a worthy benefit?  Could we afford another tier?  Is adding another card the best thing to do- from a sustainability perspective?  Would looking at a digital solution be best?  Does digital leave some customers out?

As you can see there's a lot to take into consideration- and to be honest, striking a balance between what we think would be cool to give and what we could afford for the long term (and as the program grows) coupled with what the stores can intake and execute easily is still a big task.  The idea of adding a new tier is exciting but not something I can give a concrete answer on...but I do like it and we are definitely considering all angles.

I am a Gold Card member.   My address is correct in my profile and I have granted Starbucks permission to send me offers by mail.  Of the offers mentioned in this post, I only received the one for oatmeal.   Before creating another tier of benefits, I would simply like to receive the benefits promised to the current tier.

I agree with Melody and with carollk.  and I also see the problems for Sbux......

one thing that I feel should be much more accurate than it is, or consistent, is the rewards.   There's just alot of inconsistency and it does not appear, in many cases, to be due to the USPS.

I agree with you sbx_stor. You hit all the nails on the heads for sure. To find the sweet spot. It has been a challenge even for me. Where to go and where does it need to be. For me it has to be a bulleye, solution.

I'm thinking that SBUX create a exclusive tier, one that entitles you to get a solid metal card (i.e. like Up in the Air).  Mostly its a status things, but it would really create loyalty on those who already visit starbucks quite a bit.

As a disclaimer, I know I wouldn't ever reach it, 250 drinks in a year is quite a reach for me, but it would be a goal for those who are on track to hit 5oo.

Maybe if you are to get 1500 transaction in 3 year rolling period to get the card and maintain the card/tier if reach 400 yearly transactions?  Gives incentive to be a longer time loyalty customer and then keep it going indefinitely?

Just a thought ;-)

It would be easier to make a suggestion, if had even just a percentage based knowledge of the ,rewards population and growth rates to current.

people are definetly getting excited and can't wait to see the new goal to reach, so too bask in the new level of rewards, theirs plenty of encouragement and support.

Not for nothing, but I am new to the SBUX rewards...and boy do I feel stupid.  I think that 500 is well within reach, for those select few who make their pilgrimage to get coffee two to three times a day.

It is now January 21, and even with taking a vacation the first week of the year, I am probably on track for between 475-600 stars this year.

When you stop to think about it...there are about 250 work days in a year, and what is a work day without at least two cups of coffee.

I would love to see a level that is akin to the Platinum Premier level ( A level above the highest published level of Platinum)that Marriott used to offer to their top 3% of customers.  They never told anyone what the requirements were to achieve the level, but if you got in, boy, they treated you great.  Now they have cheapened that by letting anyone that stays more than 100 nights in a year into the Platinum Premier level.

Wow RavnWyng - that is awesome.  We should take a poll - how many have 365+ stars?

COFFEEISLIFE
1/21/2011 5:48 PM

? - I figured Starbucks knew how many people have 50-100 , 101-200 , 201-300 , 301-400 , 401-500 , 501-600 , 601-700 , 701-800 , 801-900 , 901-1000 , 1001-1200 , 1201-1300 , 1301-1400 , 1401-1500 , and 1500+ stars. Also the time frame - the time it took to accumulate. These 2 bits of info would help make a decision to figure out what the next reward level should be and what the rewards should be. Otherwise It would be almost truley guessing answer to sbx_stor .

COFFEEISLIFE

Maybe the next level - from what i can observe - should take into consideration the amount spent or type of drink. Being coffee and such, should be a nice reward. For those who order 3 dollar coffee (current reward) to the 6 dollar complex drink(next reward).Which both sides can benifit from, the coffee buyer, the bean and coffee buyer, coffee and food buyer, frap/mocho buyer, frap/mocho and food buyer, coffee and merchanizer buyer, frap/mocho merchandiser buyer, tea buyer, tea and food buyer, tea and merchandiser buyer etc. There has to be categories for patrons, which to draw what the next rewards level should entail.

I realize that most people have not had their Gold membership for a year, yet. . ... ..  So, the my rewards system keeps track of the last 12 months, anything past the previous 12 months Drops Off, which i don't think people have truely registered yet. Thankfully, my bar is set low, around 1200+ stars in 12 months.

I travel frequently, but last year had been slow. I'll buy enough coffees to get me thru the day for myself, and enough extra to offer others, where ever i am at that day. It does make the day brighter for my clients, then especially for me. last year I received 77 rewards postcards 75 of them I gave to others in my travels usually people that never had Starbucks, 2 i used on myself.

WOW! O.K. I have a problem... I just checked and I have 478 in less than a year. Do I have a problem? But, I do wish a TRENTA cup comes for hot coffee. Yes, I do have a problem! Happy Anniversary My Starbucks Rewards!!

@d27s - Congrats on having so many stars. I would love to know the breakdown of how many stars most people earn! But a Trenta hot coffee? I think that would get cold before you could drink it all. Come visit starbucksmelody.com - You will like it. :)

Personally, I'd prefer it if it somehow took into consideration how much was spent.  My wife and I visit most mornings and our entire order (coffee, food, misc) goes on one charge.  Thus, one star.

If I was truly hung up on it, I could make the barista ring us up seperately and earn rewards twice as fast.  But, then I'm punishing the innocent barista and not being fair to everyone behind me in line that has to wait.

I have had an issue for quite some time regarding my drink. I always order a venti non-fat one pump mocha. Sometimes I get charged for a latte and they don't charge for one pump. Sometimes I get charged for a venti mocha. Then came the gold card, and I was excited to see "free pumps of syrup" - fine print told me that mocha was not one of the freebies.

Can anything be done? Seems to me a gold card member who earns at least 2 free drinks (30 stars) per month should be able to get one free pump of whatever syrup they want!

It does no good to "reason" with most baristas, so I have given up. However, as unemployment runs out and my school hours go up...I'll both NEED coffee and not be able to afford it.

I hesitate and regret to say it, but I may need to resort to 7-11. Sigh.

What exactly is a FIRST ANNIVERSARY anyway?

A simple question one would think, or is it?

However, when did Starbucks start counting?  When Starbucks sent out the first 'invitation' to those lucky few who received their beautiful personalized white Rewards Card (looks like boxes of Black Apron coffees) back in mid 2007?  When Starbucks sent out those first of the black versions of the 'gold Reward card' to so many loyal customers, in kate 2007, and the earliest part of 2008?  In mid/late 2008, when Starbucks Stores offered a 'Black Rewards card' that any customer could purchase for $25.oo?

Regardless, my current incarnation of the "Gold Rewards Card" clearly says "Customer Since 2007", which, even to this announcement's date in early 2011, is  well over THREE YEARS !!!!!  I really do appreciate being a Rewards Member for so long, but isn't celebrating a FIRST anniversary a bit late on in the true history of Starbucks' Reward's Card programme ?????
