Celebrate Earth Day, April 22

Hi! I wanted to tell you about an exciting event coming up on Earth Day. On April 22 we’re inviting everyone to bring in a reusable mug or tumbler and get a free brewed coffee or tea. Your choice of brew, hot or iced – it is spring after all! This is happening at participating stores in the United States and Canada.

Why are we doing this? We recognize the impact one can make through careful, conscious choices. So we want to encourage and reward those of you who use tumblers or travel mugs in your daily routines. You’re helping to reduce our environmental impact!

If you don’t have a tumbler or travel mug, they will be available for 20% off on Earth Day, April 22.  Just so you know, anytime you bring in your own tumbler or travel mug to a participating Starbucks, you get 10 cents off your drink every day.

Last year, when we did a similar promotion on Earth Day, more than 1.2 million of you participated in the free coffee giveaway.  Let’s see if we can beat that this year!  RSVP here.

Although reusable serveware and tumbler use still only accounts for a small percentage of total beverages served, those of you who did bring in reusable mugs still made a significant impact. In 2010, people brought their own tumblers into our stores more than 32 million times, keeping nearly 1.45 million pounds of paper out of landfills.

Is this true for airport stores as well?

Thanks and I really like the stats you give...people need to know how effective bringing in your own mug is.

here's a question:  how many of you (us) can remember where you were (or even born!) for the first "earth day".  (1970)  ???

It was my senior spring in high school.  I was 17.  Lord, there was SOOOOO much going on that year.... well, '68 on, actually.....

any other stories?

Does the "free tea" include the chai tea and/or chai tea lattes that are so lovely?

@kafecuba:  to answer you: NO, any cup is what has been said....from Sbux, in the news, on tv, in the papers etc.  does not have to be a cup or tumbler from Sbux.  We also went thru the same question last yr and it was clarified.  (sooner than this, I think!)   any cup/tumbler!!!

Thanks Betterbefore.  Any reusable cup works for free brewed coffee or brewed tea - not tea lattes though.

Happy Earth Day!

Now that Earth Day is gone, can you guys post how many non-reusable cups were not used that day and compare that with a "green" milestone (something like: "2,000,000 of persons brought their reusable cups for Earth Day, we saved the same quantity of cups which is equivalent to xxx threes saved, XXXX tons of paper, XXX tons of garbage... etc."

It would be useful (besides the "free" beverage) to know what was the impact of using reusable mugs. This would encourage more people to use them.

To everyone who brought in their reusable travel mug on Earth Day – Thank You! 1.1 million of you in the US and Canada had your reusable mugs filled, beating our goal from last year! A small change can make a collective impact. Keep the momentum going and use your reusable travel mug or cup EVERY time you order your favorite beverage and you’ll get $0.10 off while you’re at it. This will continue to help us reach our goal to have 100% of our cups be reusable or recyclable by 2015.
