Create Jobs for USA One-Year Anniversary

Over the last year, I’ve had the opportunity to work on the Create Jobs for USA initiative for Starbucks.  I’m so proud to be a part of a great team of people – partners, customers, and like-minded companies – who have helped raise both money and awareness of the jobs crisis in America. Create Jobs for USA was created so that we could all DO something to help the people across this country affected by unemployment, and I’m happy to say – WE DID!  We’ve raised over $15 million in just one year which has helped to create or sustain more than 5,000 jobs.  These are 5,000 jobs for our family, friends, neighbors and fellow Americans across the country, and working together we’ve made a positive impact on their lives.

In honor of the Anniversary of the Create jobs for USA program, I’d like to share a letter that Howard Schultz, Starbucks chief executive officer, wrote to our supporters – including you, our customers – who have been actively supporting Create Jobs for USA or otherwise actively involved in making your communities better this year.  Thank you for everything you do!

Gina Woods

Dear Fellow Leaders,

Today marks one year since we launched the Create Jobs for USA initiative along with Opportunity Finance Network (OFN), and I am proud and humbled to share its progress, and thank the many committed supporters who have taken an active role in helping to address the jobs crisis.

Create Jobs for USA was born from a deep-seated belief among those of us at Starbucks never to accept the status quo, and a sincere desire to address our nation’s unacceptable unemployment rates. Because of the collective effort of Starbucks partners (our employees), our customers and of like-minded businesses, that original vision has grown into an innovative program that is benefiting thousands of Americans.

To date, Create Jobs for USA has reached $15 million in donations. Through the fantastic work of OFN, this money has been distributed to community lenders serving nearly all 50 states, and these lenders are leveraging that equity to support approximately $105 million in small and community business financing which will help to create or sustain approximately 5,000 jobs across the country.

This achievement is, in large part, a testament to the generosity of our customers, and to honor their support the Schultz Family Foundation has recently donated $1 million to Create Jobs for USA. More than 800,000 Indivisible wristbands have already been distributed to customers and concerned citizens around the country who support this initiative. And with this donation, on Election Day, November 6, Starbucks U.S. company-operated stores will offer wristbands to those visiting our stores.

The success of Create Jobs for USA also would not be possible without the generous support from Banana Republic, Citi, Google Offers and MasterCard. These companies share Starbucks belief that when businesses use their resources and scale for good, they can make a positive difference in the communities they serve. It is this philosophy that continues to inspire Starbucks to consider how other business decisions we make can reap benefits for and beyond our partners, customers and shareholders.

On that note, I am pleased to announce the next phase planned for Create Jobs for USA, The Indivisible Fund. This Fund, which OFN plans to offer, will give Starbucks and like-minded corporations another, sustainable way to support Create Jobs for USA. Corporations can invest in The Indivisible Fund, which will finance community lenders across the country so that they can make new loans to community businesses committed to creating and retaining jobs. This adds an important new dimension to Create Jobs for USA. These loans will be repaid to the corporations, giving these companies the opportunity to invest in the economic future of the country by putting their funds to work supporting business growth and innovation. Starbucks has signed on as a founding, $5 million investor in The Indivisible Fund. We invite other like-minded companies to join us in supporting The Indivisible Fund by providing their own loans to the Fund, and look forward to the great work that we can continue to do together.

It’s exciting to share these results of what we’ve been able to accomplish together in the last year. But it’s important to remember that behind every statistic are real people—men, women and families that many of us will never meet, but whose lives are benefiting and can benefit from the decisions we make every day as individuals and as companies. The perpetuation of the American Dream exists because of the initiative, sacrifice, talent and hard work of all American citizens, on behalf of themselves as well as one another.

In closing, as proud as I am of our work together, I urge all of us to continue to take the problems our country faces very seriously. Unemployment remains stubbornly high, and is only one of many complex challenges facing our country. Create Jobs for USA is by no means a definitive solution, but it serves as a reminder that, whoever wins the election next week, progress is possible when we come together—indivisible.

With gratitude and respect,

Howard Schultz

I live out of the city in the country away from it all. I have had some very ruff times and here thank goodness if money is needed there are so many ways to make it. I have gathered eggs, cleaned homes and done odd jobs for the elderly . If your a man there are fences to fix are put up everywhere you look , post to cut, paint and set. I'm so proud to have been able to do this work when I couldn't even feed myself the day before. If work is wanted you can always find it here and for that I'm so proud to be a country pumpkin. I learned along time ago , work pays off in so many ways . By way of mouth I had so many offers I had to so I cant and that's not something I like to say. Odd jobs are out there and people need so many things done. I guess if you put our self out there someone Will call you then its up to you to make that impression to get those call backs. gg

I love this idea--think it's a great promotion.  Must say that yesterday I was told via online newsletter that Starbucks was offering free coffee on 11/4 and 11/6.  I stopped at my local Starbucks and was told she had not heard of any promotions for 11/4 or 11/6.

I'd really like one of these bracelets, as I am a great fan of Create Jobs USA.

Mind, I hope they are not made in China.  We can make these right at home.

My daughter-in-law used to be a barista and manager at the shops in Jacksonville, FL so we all were very spoiled with Starbucks, of course I am from Seattle and that being the capital of coffee drinkers I was already aware of Starbucks, I absolutely love it and get one whenever I can. Right now I live in Belmond, IA and the closest one for me is at the hospital in Mason City, IA but its better than nothing at all but when I visit home and see my sons in Florida I enjoy as much as I can.  Keep up the good work and I love the bracelet~

I am just a hard working mother and wife who lives pay check to pay check.  I know I can't make a difference on my own but with the elecion comes hope of a new change, one where people like me who have a family like my own.  My family is my life and there isn't anything I would not do for them, including working 5 jobs if I had to.  But, why am I busting my butt trying to make it all meet when most can have money and or assistance thrown at them at their leisure when we struggle to treat our kids to a happy meal on payday night as a special surprise? I have hope that it will change, soon.

11/6/2012 6:19 AM

V12345~ They tried to charge me too and I told them they better look on their website because it doesn't say anything about charging.  There are also A LOT of different websites stating they are giving it away for free.  You would think with an offering like this Starbucks would make sure that all of their employees know about it.  :(  One of them even said, "we have a lot of these in the back"!!!  So obviously they knew they were going to need them.  As much as $5 wasn't going to break me, it was the point that they aren't supposed to charge.

Ok, I have seen this type thing tooooo much with Starbucks.  You USE US and our paychecks to get you where you want to be then you screw us with wording ...over and over. and I'm sick of it and I'm in think you have just lost another customer. 1 simple act of kindness from you for all we did especially on Election Day would have been nice. but I think you have become too big and greedy and I'm sick of you Starbucks!!

I truly feel today on Election Day because of this last scam of yours this will be my last Starbucks drink. Thanks for nothing, again.

I voted today and went to Starbucks.  Had my sticker and everything...but was not offered nor did the staff know anything about the wristbands other than saying they were for sale.  This was at the Gateway location in South San Francisco.  I wish I had gone to the one in San Bruno at the Bayhill shopping Center instead.  The Barista was ridiculously slow and beyond untidy.  He actually appeared to be under the influence of some substance.  I ordered a venti Creme Brulee latte which turned out awful.  It took him forever to make it.  What started out with two people in front of me became a line goingout the door.  People did start walking out.  Plus he had practically every drink made wrong and was serving up drinks no one had ordered.  My Creme Brulee was sickly sweet and was truly unfit to drink.  He put caramel sauce in it as well as salted caramel flakes and a few other things that didn't belong. I've had the Creme Brulee coffee drink countless times and that wasn't it.  With the line so long and as slow as the barista was continuing to turn out wrong drinks, I basically just took the loss of a $4.75 coffee drink unfit to drink.  The Gateway Starbucks in South San Francisco does not have my vote.  The Starbucks at the San Bruno Bayhill Shopping Center does have my vote.  They almost always provide great service even whenthey're slammed.

After a strong start your Indivisible program seems to have just disappeared.

I purchased a bracelet, ceramic mug and US made plastic coffee container, and was hoping for more Made in the USA products.  I visit Starbucks several times a week and have seen nothing.

I'd like to know if this program is still in place.  If so, what is being done and if not, why not.

I don't purchase merchandise from Starbucks because it is not American made.

I look forward to your reply.

I am very happy to visit Starbucks blog webpage. It is highly encouraging to know that good ideas may also work in real world such as " Create jobs for USA " thereby serving people and upholding humanity. I will also try to put some good ideas for community social uplift.
