Less Cups, More Savings

A top suggestion on My Starbucks Idea has been to focus on offering recycling in stores.  We've made some strides here, but also have found alternate ways to reduce cup waste and encourage more people to bring in their own reusable cups. This month, we were happy to announce a great new way to do just that.

We introduced a new, reusable Starbucks cup!  We first tested this cup in stores in the Pacific Northwest, and it has been a hit.  We’ve sold lots of cups and we’re giving out more personal cup discounts – about 26% more compared to last year.  We certainly hope this cup has a similar effect  in the rest of the United States and Canada!

While we’ve sold reusable mugs and tumblers for years, what makes this new cup exciting is that it’s yours for only $1. It’s a high-quality, low-cost option to enjoy your favorite Starbucks beverage. This cup is less expensive than other tumblers because it’s made with a lighter material and less of it. Though you’ll need to use a sleeve for the cup when you’re holding a hot drink, it’s a low-cost, high-impact way to help make a difference.

And since you receive a 10-cent discount every time you use it in our stores, this cup pays for itself in just 10 uses. And you’ve saved 10 paper cups!  If you use it daily for a month you’ll help avoid using more than a pound of paper or 3.5 pounds of wood. At the end of its life, if polypropylene (#5) plastic recycling is available in your region, you can recycle this cup and truly minimize your impact on the planet.

Starbucks is committed to reducing our cup waste. We have a goal to serve 5% of the beverages we make in our company-owned stores in personal tumblers by 2015. By offering this option and providing our 10-cent discount, we hope to inspire you to bring your own cup.

This is seriously the best idea launched on MSI.  I love the reusable cups!  I have way too many Starbucks tumblers at home, but the three things keeping me from using them were that I simply forgot about it, that I didn't want to lug it around after, and that I was afraid ob losing it due to the cost.  With this reusable tumbler, all of those issues are solved!  Thank you, Starbucks!

I love my reusable cup. I put a strike mark on the bottom so I know how many times I have used it. I do notice it is getting stained from the coffee used in it. I love having the $.10 discount for reusing this cup. Just need away to rinse it out before leaving the store because there is no stopper that fits the hole in the top. The green ones for the paper cups do not fit the reusable ones.  Put out a stopper for the reuseable cups. I also like the reusable sleeve to protect my hands from being burned by the coffee in my reusable cup. Thanks for these ideas!

Today I saw someone with this cup at my local store, and I wanted one; however, my local doesn't sell them yet. Since I left I have been trying to find one, and looked on the site and was dissapointed to see them not offered online. Thankfully, I found a few online through ebay where I will be purchasing them. I love this idea, and I hope maybe one could be re-designed so that it won't have to be replaced every 30 days or less.

These finally started showing up at local stores.  I really like these.  For years I have tried to bring one of my Aladdin hot/cold tumblers, but they are a little bulky, not always with me, not always clean, etc.  At $1 I can buy a new one if I don't have one with me, probably collect a few, and use them on a following visits, eventually recycling it when it's worn out.

I hope these are eventually very easy to get.  Right now they're still hidden away behind the counter and you have to ask for them.

Love the new cups, but does not work for me as I drink Vente! When will Vente cups be available?

Great idea...love the cup, but, for the love of coffee, please have a lid that have a drink hole that fits the stirrer sticks properly.  Big error, with the current reusable lid, is that the hole is too big - by millimeters--and if your coffee tips, it spills out, as if there were no stopper there.

What happens after the 30th use?  Does the cup "self destruct" like the tape in Mission Impossible?  ;-)

I love the $1 reusable cup.  I keep mine in my car, so it's always handy.  Even though it's only good for so many uses, I feel the need to decorate it. One of the baristas had hers decorated with stamps from the Starbucks coffee bags.  Very unique.  I love the idea of personalizing it.  Thanks!

What materials are the cups made of? Is it healthy? I've always heard heating anything up in plastic could potentially be toxic and release some of the many different chemicals that are involved in the manufacturing of plastic.

Thanks for all the great comments.  I wanted to answer a few questions that have come up.

First, the cups are made from polypropylene, or #5, plastic.  Polypropylene doesn’t contain BPA or leach anything into hot liquids or foods it is in contact with.  Its very inert and safe, and a lot of food packaging is made from polypropylene because of this ( including our cold cups!).

As for a Venti size cup, we’ve passed along this feedback to the reusable cup team for consideration.

Thanks to everyone for making this such a successful product and keep on saving cups by using your tumblers!

Also, great idea.

I love this cup! I love that it's only $1 and that it looks exactly like the paper cups! I know it's all in my head, but hey, coffee tastes better when I have a "typical" starbucks cup rather than an average re-useable coffee mug! So happy...

I would buy one of these cups, but it is only available in the Grande size and I always buy Venti size drinks. If it was available in Tall and Venti sizes, I think more people would buy them.

We've received many votes on the Venti $1 Reusable Cup idea.  The team is currently vetting the idea.

Good idea to save trees with less paper. I personally would be wary of using plastic cup to drink steaming coffee- I'm afraid of chemicals that may soak into the liquid. I have lots of Starbucks glass reusable cups.

If I am supplying the cup, lid, and the sleeve why do I only get a $.10 discount? The customers using the cup are your regulars and they are saving you money by supplying everything but the liquid. Might sell more if the incentive was more than a dime.

Venti! Venti! Venti! Please!!!!!  So easy to have grande/tall lines to avoid multiple cups. Or leave it and make a venti!!!  I love my grande cup but don't use it as much because its not big enough to fill my addiction!! Also less expensive resuable sleeve!
