White Cup Art Contest

We know that we have the most creative customers out there. Already plenty of artistic souls are taking our paper cups and drawing or painting beautiful images on them. You took our blank canvas and made it into a work of art. And then you took it one step further, with the idea to create a cup design contest!

Starting today we are asking for your cup art designs as part of a contest where the winner could be produced on a reusable tumbler. Just submit a photo of your cup art on Instagram or Twitter using the hashtag #WhiteCupContest. You can see some of the entries on our Pinterest Board.

The winning design may be produced on a limited edition cup and sold online in the fall. We’ll let you know when that happens, too. We can’t wait to see what you come up with. Your creativity astounds us! Read the official rules here

- 1/2 inch horizontal space must remain clear on top and bottom
- Cup design will only be printed in four colors, one of which must be the logo color 3425 Pantone.
- Manipulation to the Siren logo is not allowed.
- No gradients, glitter, metallics or translucent paints can be printed.

NO PURCHASE NECESSARY. Contest starts on April 22, 2014 at 12:00 AM ET and ends on May 12, 2014 at 11:59:59 PM ET. Open only to legal residents of the 50 US/DC/Canada who are at least 18 years old or age of majority in the jurisdiction of residence at the time of entry. See Official Rules for entry details, prize details, judging criteria, etc. 1 prize available to be won. Approx. retail value of the prize: USD $425 / CAD $467.33. Void where prohibited or restricted by law. Skill-testing question required if a winner is a Canadian resident. Sponsor: Starbucks Corporation, 2401 Utah Ave. South, Seattle, WA 98134, USA.

Update 6/19/14:

We’ve chosen a winner and we’re so excited! The winning entry won us over with its expressive, iconic and handmade graphics. There were almost 4000 entries and this was an incredibly difficult choice. Your entries showed an unbelievable amount of creativity, and originality.  This was so much fun that we can’t wait to launch future versions of the contest. The winning cup, pictured, will be printed on our reusable cup and sold online in the fall.

Hi !!!

I love design, I love Starbucks and this contest is a great idea!

But it's really a shame that's only for the U.S., even more when Starbucks is so international.

I'm from Costa Rica (you already have 2 stores here), and it would've been awesome to participate.

Maybe next time you can consider a contest open for everyone?, I know there's a lot of people who would appreciate that :)

4/22/2014 1:54 PM

Do I have to put the art on the cup and then take a picture of it? Or, can I send a graphic that will fit the requirements posted?

Erin W
4/22/2014 2:21 PM

@Nivo - Due to time and legal constraints we could only include the US & Canada (excluding Quebec) at this time. We’re hoping to have future rounds and open them up then. Keep an eye out for that announcement!

@bdkbaz1 - Yes, the art needs to be on the cup.

4/22/2014 3:09 PM

@Erin W I will! Thank you ;)

4/22/2014 4:24 PM

If you are under 18, can a parent help you enter?

4/22/2014 4:34 PM

I love this idea, but would love to be able to submit the artwork via facebook.  Believe it, not everyone has a twitter account or Instagram.

4/22/2014 7:21 PM

Oh yeah!!!! I draw on my cups all the time.

4/23/2014 10:42 AM

where do we email or design for cup contest ?

4/23/2014 10:47 AM

Can we submit on Facebook if we don't have Instagram or Twitter ?

4/23/2014 11:51 AM

Submissions are only accepted on Instagram and Twitter.  Please review the contest rules for more information:  blogs.starbucks.com/.../cups-contest.aspx

4/23/2014 4:54 PM

Are the guidelines for art in this post the ones to go by? There are no guidelines in the contest rules this specific for the art.

4/23/2014 4:54 PM

So disappointed I can't have my art students work on this due to age requirements :(

4/23/2014 7:25 PM

Yay this is awesome! I finally have a chance to showcase some of the artwork I've done: www.facebook.com/cupartcassie

Will definitely be coming up with some new ones to submit via Instagram :)

4/23/2014 7:33 PM

The four colors includes the logo green, but does it include black too? Or black, green, and three more?

4/24/2014 3:40 AM

This is a fun and exciting idea! I'm in :)

4/24/2014 8:45 AM

Can we enter from the uk?

4/24/2014 8:51 AM

So disappointed I can't enter because of the age requirements:( 😞😞😞

4/24/2014 7:59 PM

So we can use Starbucks white cup and draw around the logo and then we take picture for the design and submit it to tweeter why not the Facebook ?

4/24/2014 8:02 PM

And what colors we need t use

4/24/2014 9:56 PM

Can we do a digital graphic and paste that on the cup then take a picture or does it have to be drawn??

4/25/2014 5:51 AM

How many designs each person can submit

4/25/2014 6:44 AM

cool contest...is there a theme?...if so I failed to read it along the way

4/25/2014 8:29 AM

Does black count as one of the four colors?

4/25/2014 8:49 AM

It seems you are no longer putting new entries on Pinterest

Are you still receiving cup designs?

4/25/2014 8:54 AM

Hi Erin, love this idea! The only thing is that it was hard to find this. What if Starbucks powered it through a gallery like this:

Let me know what you think! I'd love to discuss this with you.

4/25/2014 9:12 AM

lmao! Nice try

So basically once I submit and if I win through my design,  Starbucks will own the rights to this design and it's No longer mine.  Meaning I can't use it for anything else.

$425 is only a small portion of what a person can make off of a design , especially a drawing.

I'll pass

4/25/2014 6:11 PM

How does someone get a white cup for designing it?

4/26/2014 3:50 AM

I LOVE the idea of a reusable cup. I have two issues though: 1. Cup only comes in one size. 2. Cup is made in China.

4/26/2014 5:42 AM

I will turn 18 on may 12 (the last day of the contest). Can I still enter designs before that date?

4/26/2014 12:20 PM

Hey Starbucks! You guys tweeted for me to share my design on your Pinterest board, but you tweeted it to a retweet. Can you send me the link for my twitter? My twitter username is dooodlesbychris

4/27/2014 3:21 PM

I love this idea! I will do this but i'm not joining the contest because I don't have twitter or  Instagram.

4/28/2014 3:27 AM

how do I get my entry posted on Starbucks Pinterest?

4/28/2014 9:52 PM

Im having trouble uploading my cup idea..i have around 50 cups already designed to share..can u help please..thank u

4/30/2014 8:53 AM

So, is an Ink wash against the rules since it's not a solid color?

5/1/2014 11:20 AM

Can you explain a little bit more about the 1/2 inc horizontal clear space on top and bottom?

5/2/2014 11:24 AM

when does voting begin?  Do we the public vote?  Also, Starbucks is long overdue for something PINK....such as cups, STRAWS etc.  Im a Starbucks AND pink freak...lets combine the two?  PLEASE.

5/3/2014 9:32 AM

Why not do a pink design?

5/3/2014 11:12 AM

What are the dimension of the white cup?

5/3/2014 1:37 PM

I hope this wasn't asked already... Is artwork not already on a cup (ie Instagram image) allowed, or must the art already have been physically applied?

5/3/2014 10:21 PM

Hopefully the sales go to some sort of non profit charity for the arts. Also, the reusable cups are $1. Pls keep them that way it makes perfect for kids projects.

I am working on this project with a group of my students from The Arc of Monroe (which serves adults with disabilities) Unfortunately some or all of them will not be able to creat a unique user account for twitter or instagram.  I am willing to use my accounts to post for them but I see in the rules it says only one entry per day and that you can't use other people's work in the entry, which if I'm entering for them then that means I'm entering someone elses work :( Is there a way around this issue?  It's not really friendly to everyone who not have access to these social media sites.

Thank you

We're thrilled with all the excitement and interest in the #WhiteCupContest.  Many of the questions asked here can be answered by reading the contest rules:  blogs.starbucks.com/.../cups-contest.aspx

We appreciate your comments and feedback as they will help us better the contest for the future.

Only a few more days.  Contest entries need to be submitted by May 12.

5/12/2014 7:00 AM

I submitted my design on instagram five days ago but it still is not on the pinterest board.

5/12/2014 11:25 AM

Not all of the submissions are being shared on the Pinterest Board - just a sampling.

5/15/2014 11:00 AM

Kinda bummed, I was asked permission to post my cup designs on Pinterest and I replied YES, but haven't seen them posted yet...Will they be posted now that the contest is over???

6/3/2014 7:44 AM

Any updates on the winner?

6/4/2014 7:42 AM

Who won the contest?

6/4/2014 1:56 PM

Have you chosen a winner yet for the white cup contest?  When will it be announced through Instagram?
