After enjoying our tasty holiday treats, we are ready to jump into the New Year, full of fresh ideas. One popular idea is for Starbucks to offer more gluten-free options. We’ve started doing some operational testing in a select number of our stores and the baristas & customers who participated were psyched about the idea. Hello, Chris here. I’m the lead product developer for the new Gluten-free Orange Valencia Cake. Today, I’d like to share a behind the scenes look into the development of a delicious and gluten-free cake. We start with just seven simple ingredients (eggs, Valencia orange pulp, almonds, sugar, orange peel, gluten-free baking powder, and orange oil) and carefully blend them together in small batches at our partner bakery. Because gluten can easily contaminate through pans, tools and even in the air, the bakery has a special gluten-free zone with dedicated equipment, pans and washing stations. I am excited to share the next evolution of our loyalty program. While both Starbucks Card Rewards and Starbucks Gold exceeded our expectations, we are always looking for ways to improve our programs and we received a lot of great feedback on what we could do differently. Launching on December 26, 2009, My Starbucks Rewards will combine many elements of both programs – with no membership fee ! – into one simplified program. On more than one occasion, I have been in line at my local Starbucks and saw one of our wonderful Gold members pull out a Gold card AND a registered Starbucks Card and ask which card would provide the better discount.
