Wi-Fi is now completely free for everyone! On top of Wi-Fi now being free, we have also simplified the login process. I used to go to a number of other places that had free wifi and every time I did, Starbucks missed out on a purchase. I haven't seen a problem with people hanging out all day, even though some would say I am one of those people. Seriously, why would I want to sit in my office when I can do all of my work in a much nicer atmosphere? Most of the time, I'm not actually using the wifi, I'm just working. If it gets too crowded, I leave and let someone else have my spot. Since my Starbucks started offering free wifi, I end up making 2 or 3 separate purchases before I leave, instead of one.

Finally got tired of driving around, I am typing this from Scooters!

It is nice to see positive comments re: Wi-Fi on here! The response to free Wi-Fi has been overwhelmingly positive, but please let me know if you are experiencing any issues. Thanks.

Starbucks can readily manage the inconcenience of people hanging out forEVER and clogging the store, as it is readily easy to limit the log-in time used to X minutes. As an example, Qwest allowed their customers to use Starbucks Wi-Fi (AT&T Wireless, actually) for a limited time (1 hour, as I recall). Starbucks can maintain the benefit of free Wi-Fi and discourage people moving in and using their store as a Home Office by limiting Wi-Fi use to a reasonable amount of time.
